It was not a feature for every iPhone running iOS 18, nor did it replace Siri. On supported devices, it gave Apple’s system features a way to call on ChatGPT when broader knowledge, open-ended reasoning, or image and document help could be useful.
That approach made sense for three practical reasons: a more capable route for difficult questions, AI assistance built into existing workflows, and access with user controls over what gets shared.

1. ChatGPT could help Siri with questions that need broader knowledge
Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT were designed to do different jobs. Apple positioned its own features around personal context, system actions, writing help, summaries, and image tools. ChatGPT added a general-purpose conversational model for tasks such as explaining a technical subject, brainstorming, comparing options, or interpreting a document or image. Apple’s WWDC 2024 presentation described external models as useful for broad world knowledge and specialized expertise, while Apple Intelligence provides deeper integration with the operating system.
In practice, Siri remains the starting point. When a request may benefit from ChatGPT, Siri can offer to pass it along; Apple’s demonstration showed the user being asked before the request was shared. For example, someone could ask for a detailed explanation of a complicated topic or request meal ideas based on a photo and a list of ingredients. ChatGPT can also support follow-up questions in a conversational exchange.

#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
This is a capability complement, not a guarantee that ChatGPT will always give a better answer. The model can be wrong or misleading, so verify important claims—especially for medical, legal, financial, and safety decisions.
2. ChatGPT could help in the workflow, not only in its own app
The benefit of the partnership was not simply having another chatbot to open. Apple connected selected ChatGPT capabilities to Apple Intelligence features, so help could appear in the place where a user was already working. That reduces the steps involved in switching apps, copying text or uploading a file, and then bringing a response back.

- Siri: Route a suitable question to ChatGPT.
- Writing Tools: Use Compose to draft text from a prompt, or work with selected or existing text.
- Visual intelligence: Ask ChatGPT to help analyze objects or places.
- Image Playground: Use ChatGPT to expand image-creation possibilities.
- Shortcuts: Call a ChatGPT model as part of a shortcut for more complex requests.
For instance, a user drafting an email can request a first version without manually moving the prompt into another app. Someone looking at an object can seek an explanation from the visual workflow. These are selected integrations, not unrestricted access to every iPhone function. Apple’s iPhone guide documents the available controls and workflows.
Use Compose in Writing Tools
- Tap a text field while typing, then tap the Writing Tools button.
- Swipe up if needed and tap Compose.
- Describe what ChatGPT should write.
- Choose whether to include all the text or only selected text, then tap the send button.
3. It lowered the barrier to trying AI while keeping sharing under user control
Apple’s integration allows basic ChatGPT use without creating an account. Users can also connect a free or paid ChatGPT account; signing in is required to save conversations to ChatGPT history, and a paid account can provide more frequent access to advanced capabilities through Apple’s integration. Account-free access is useful for trying the feature, but it should not be confused with a promise that nothing is transmitted: requests still go to ChatGPT for processing.

Apple asks before sending requests or attachments by default. Its settings let users turn the extension off, and eligible ordinary requests can be sent without a confirmation prompt if that setting is changed; Apple still asks before sending photos or files. Apple says the integration obscures the user’s IP address, while limited contextual information may accompany a request, including time zone, country, device type, language, and which feature is being used. General location may be provided for fraud prevention and legal compliance. If a ChatGPT account is connected, OpenAI’s account and data policies apply. These protections make sharing more controlled, not private in the sense that content never leaves the iPhone. See Apple’s privacy and settings documentation.
Enable or disable ChatGPT
- Open Settings and tap Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Under Extensions, tap ChatGPT, then tap Set Up.
- Choose Enable ChatGPT for account-free use, or Use ChatGPT with an Account to sign in.
To turn it off later, go to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT and switch off Use ChatGPT. You can disable Setup Prompts there as well. To stop confirmation for eligible ordinary requests, switch off Confirm ChatGPT Requests; photos and files still require confirmation.

Which iPhones can use the integration?
At the original iOS 18 rollout, Apple listed these supported iPhones for Apple Intelligence: iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max. The ChatGPT extension depends on Apple Intelligence, so the fact that a phone can run iOS 18 does not by itself mean it can use this feature. Availability also depends on software version, region, and supported language. Apple announced the initial feature availability in iOS 18.1 on October 28, 2024; its September 2024 announcement had said Apple Intelligence would begin rolling out through iOS 18.1.
- If ChatGPT is missing in Settings: Check Apple Intelligence hardware eligibility, software version, region, and language availability.
- If Siri does not offer ChatGPT: The request may not be considered suitable, or the extension may be disabled. You can explicitly say “Ask ChatGPT.”
- If a photo or file is not sent: Apple requires confirmation before transmitting it.
- If conversations do not appear in ChatGPT history: Sign in to a ChatGPT account; account-free requests are not saved to ChatGPT history.
- If advanced access is limited: Usage can depend on the account and its plan. A paid subscription is optional, not a prerequisite for trying basic Apple integration.
Who benefits most—and who may prefer something else?
The integration is most useful if you often ask open-ended questions, draft text, work with images or documents, dislike moving content between apps, or already use ChatGPT and want it available from Apple workflows. It may be a poor fit if your iPhone is unsupported, the feature is unavailable in your region or language, or you do not want requests sent to an external AI provider.

For alarms, calls, messages, reminders, device control, and Apple-specific actions, Siri or Shortcuts may be the more direct choice. For work that needs deterministic execution, use a dedicated app or verified workflow rather than relying on generated text. Avoid sharing confidential material unless you understand the relevant privacy terms, and check important answers against authoritative sources.
Apple Intelligence without ChatGPT remains an option for users who want Apple-native writing assistance, summaries, image tools, and system features without connecting ChatGPT. The standalone ChatGPT iPhone app offers a separate interface and account history; its U.S. App Store listing identifies iOS 17 or later as a requirement. That is different from the Apple Intelligence extension and does not make unsupported iPhones eligible for the system integration.
