There is no substantiated evidence that three phone settings will silence 95% of spam calls and scam texts. But built-in caller screening, spam filtering, and message controls can reduce interruptions and help you spot suspicious contact. The exact options depend on your phone, software, carrier, and country.

Designed with seniors in mind, it’s ready to use and simple to maintain. For even stronger protection, you can pair it with your phone provider’s spam filtering service.
Filtered calls may not trigger missed-call or voicemail notifications, but they remain in call history; check voicemail if you are expecting an important call. Google says numbers outside your Contacts may be sent to Google to identify callers or assess spam, so consider that privacy trade-off before enabling caller identification.

2. Screen or silence unknown callers
iPhone
Open Settings and look under Apps > Phone for the available options to screen or silence unknown callers. Labels and choices can differ by iOS version. Silencing unknown numbers can reduce ringing, but a legitimate call from a number you have not saved may also be silenced. Add family, schools, medical offices, and other important contacts to Contacts. Apple’s caller guidance explains the available controls.
Recommended Free Tools
Silencing spam identified by a carrier is a separate option and works only with certain carriers. If you prefer to judge a caller before answering, screening may be a better fit than silencing; check recent calls and voicemail for anything you might have missed.

iPhone Messages
Open Settings > Apps > Messages and look for message filtering options. You can screen messages from unknown senders and, where supported, filter categories of SMS, MMS, and RCS messages into folders. Availability and behavior vary by region and configuration. Review filtered folders so a legitimate first-time message does not go unnoticed. Apple documents the options in its iPhone message-filtering guide.

Android and other messaging apps
Filtering and reporting controls depend on your messaging app and device. Open the conversation’s details or menu to look for options to block or report the sender; labels differ between apps. If you cannot find a setting, search Settings for message filtering or spam.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not open links in suspicious texts or share passwords or one-time codes in response to unsolicited messages. If a text claims to be from a bank, delivery service, or government office, verify it through a number or website you already know is genuine rather than using the contact details in the message. The FTC explains call-blocking options and unwanted-call risks in its unwanted-calls guidance.
Choose the right balance, then check what was filtered
| Approach | What it does | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Spam identification and filtering | Warns about or filters calls the phone identifies as suspected spam. | Options vary by device; filtered calls may require checking call history or voicemail. |
| Screening | Lets a supported phone or feature gather information from a caller before you decide to answer. | It is not available on every device or in every market, and it does not catch every spam call. |
| Silencing unknown callers | Reduces ringing from numbers that are not saved or identified under the phone’s rules. | Legitimate callers using new numbers may also be silenced. Save important contacts and review calls and voicemail. |
| Message filtering and blocking | Moves some messages to filtered folders and lets you block or report unwanted senders. | Availability varies, and legitimate messages from unknown senders can be filtered too. |
Filters are useful but imperfect: a scam can get through, and a legitimate caller or message can be misclassified. Start with the controls already on your phone; a third-party call-blocking app is optional, not a demonstrated requirement. If a setting is missing, search Settings for spam, unknown callers, or message filtering, then check the device maker’s or carrier’s instructions for your model and region.
