Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Yes—but not with the same isolation as a normal Linux Docker host. On Android, the practical approach is Termux with PRoot-Distro. It can pull Docker/OCI images and run their user-space Linux workloads without a Docker daemon. The three most useful candidates are Jellyfin for local streaming, Nextcloud for private files, and Syncthing for folder synchronization. Choose ARM64 images, keep persistent data on storage you can back up, and treat the phone as a small personal server rather than an internet-facing production machine.
What “Docker on Android” actually means
Install Termux, add PRoot-Distro, and use it to install a Linux userland or an image published in Docker/OCI format. The official installation command is:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
pkg install proot-distro
PRoot-Distro can pull images for architectures including aarch64 and linux/arm64, which are the safest choices for current 64-bit Android phones. Its documented example is:
proot-distro install nextcloud:32
This is not kernel-isolated Docker. PRoot-Distro runs programs through proot, so there is no real PID, network or IPC isolation, no cgroups, and no seccomp. It also cannot provide kernel-dependent features such as real namespaces, FUSE support, or iptables targets. Filesystem-heavy work is noticeably slower because system calls are intercepted with ptrace.

Think of each workload as an ordinary long-running Linux process inside a user-space root filesystem. Full init systems such as systemd are generally unavailable; start the application process itself and arrange your own way to keep it running. Android may also suspend or kill background processes, especially when battery restrictions are enabled.
Before installing anything
- Confirm architecture: use ARM64 images on an ARM64 phone. Avoid an image that only publishes x86 or x86-64 variants.
- Plan storage: the root filesystem, application databases, caches, logs, media and backups all consume Termux storage. A media library can fill internal storage quickly.
- Check Android permissions: grant Termux access to shared storage when needed and verify that the selected directory remains writable after reboots or Android updates.
- Provide power: continuous transcoding, indexing or synchronization can drain a battery and generate heat. A charger and a ventilated location are more reliable than occasional battery operation.
- Keep exposure private: PRoot-Distro does not give you the network isolation of Docker. Do not publish an administrative service directly to the internet without a separate, deliberately designed security layer.
The three workloads compared
| Workload | Best use | Image position | Ports and data | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jellyfin | Streaming locally stored music and video | Official jellyfin/jellyfin image; official images are published for multiple architectures |
TCP 8096 for the web service; optional UDP 7359 for local discovery; persistent configuration, cache and media mounts | Large libraries and transcoding can overwhelm phone storage, heat and battery |
| Nextcloud | Private file access and sharing | PRoot-Distro documentation demonstrates nextcloud:32 as an installable image |
Persistent application data and database storage are required | A production-like deployment needs careful database, backup and storage planning |
| Syncthing | Continuous folder synchronization between devices | Use an ARM64 image only after verifying the image and tag you intend to run | Persistent synchronized folders and the service’s network access | Android storage permissions and long-running background behavior must be tested on your phone |
1. Jellyfin: turn the phone into a local media server
Jellyfin is the clearest fit when the phone has media you want to watch on other devices over your home network. Its project documents the official jellyfin/jellyfin container image and publishes official images for multiple architectures, so select an ARM64-compatible tag.

Set up persistent directories first
Create separate locations for configuration, cache and media inside storage that Termux can access. The exact host paths depend on your phone and Android storage layout; what matters is that configuration and cache survive container restarts and that the media directory is mounted read-only when you do not need Jellyfin to modify files.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Configuration: users, libraries, plugins and server settings.
- Cache: artwork, metadata and temporary processing files.
- Media: your video, music and photo collection.
Install and launch
- Install PRoot-Distro in Termux with
pkg install proot-distro. - Use PRoot-Distro’s OCI-image installation syntax with an ARM64 Jellyfin image and tag. Verify the tag before installing; do not assume every published tag supports your phone’s architecture.
- Enter the installed environment with PRoot-Distro’s login command and start Jellyfin’s application process directly. There is no Docker daemon or systemd service manager handling it for you.
- Open the server from another device at the phone’s local IP address on TCP port
8096. - Enable UDP port
7359only if you need Jellyfin’s local-device discovery; clients can also connect by entering the server address manually.
Back up the configuration and database as well as the media. If the phone runs out of space, clear or relocate cache only after confirming that your library and configuration remain on persistent storage.

2. Nextcloud: private files without a hosted account
PRoot-Distro’s own quick-start material uses proot-distro install nextcloud:32, making Nextcloud the most directly demonstrated image-level installation in this setup. That command proves the image can be pulled and installed; it does not turn the phone into a hardened, production-grade cloud platform by itself.
Install the image
- Install PRoot-Distro from Termux:
pkg install proot-distro. - Install the documented image:
proot-distro install nextcloud:32. - Log into the environment and start the Nextcloud process directly, keeping its data directory on persistent Termux-accessible storage.
- Complete the web setup from a browser on your local network, using a strong administrator password and a database arrangement supported by the image you selected.
Plan storage and recovery
Nextcloud’s files, previews, application data and database must all be treated as persistent state. A disposable root filesystem is not a backup. Keep copies on another device or an attached drive, and test that you can restore both the database and the file tree. For anything beyond a small personal or household deployment, plan database maintenance, upgrades, access control and encrypted remote access separately.

Because PRoot-Distro lacks cgroups and full namespace isolation, do not treat this installation as a security boundary between users or as a substitute for a dedicated server. It is best suited to private, controlled networks where you understand who can reach the service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. Syncthing: synchronize folders, conditionally
Syncthing is attractive on an old phone because it can keep selected folders synchronized without requiring a central cloud account. However, the available documentation does not establish a specific Syncthing container image for this Android/PRoot route. Treat it as a verification project, not a guaranteed one-command install.
Best Value
- 2 in 1: USB C + USB 3.0, 32GB usb c flash drive has dual ports, usb 3.0 port is applied to all devices which have usb 3.0 interface and usb c port is widely used in all Android smartphones with OTG function
- High Speed USB 3.0: Read speed up to 90 MB/s, Write speed up to 30 MB/s, the speed of USB 3.0 interface is faster than USB 2.0, save time to wait, increases work productivity. Note: Speed will be limited if you use the USB key in the USB 2.0 interface
- Large Compatibility: The USB 3.0 Connector is compatible with USB 3.0 & USB 2.0 backward USB 1.1 devices, such as Laptop, Desktop, Car Audio, Tablet, TV, Speakers, Projector. USB-C port is compatible with all Android Smartphones
- Expand Storage: Good performance in storing, transferring and sharing digital data with families, friends, colleagues, customers. It can expand the capacity of smartphone, you can watch movies or share pictures when you go on vacation with your family
- Note: Make sure your smartphone is equipped with OTG function and need to open OTG function in Settings when you plug memory stick, then you can transfer easily data bewteen different devices
Check compatibility before committing data
- Choose an image that explicitly supports
linux/arm64and confirm its tag and documentation. - Test that the image can see the exact Android directories you intend to synchronize.
- Grant Termux storage permission and verify read/write access from inside the PRoot environment.
- Pair a second device and run a small test folder before adding photos or other irreplaceable data.
- Check whether Android keeps the process alive when the screen is off, the phone is idle or another app is in the foreground.
Expect operational compromises
Continuous synchronization needs a continuously running process and reliable network access. Battery optimization can stop it, and Android storage behavior can change after an update. Keep the phone powered, review Android’s battery settings for Termux, and maintain an independent backup: synchronization mirrors deletions and corruption as well as good files.
How to keep these services usable
Run one process per workload
Start the application process itself inside the PRoot environment rather than trying to boot systemd or another full init system. A terminal multiplexer or another process supervisor may help keep a foreground process attached to a session, but it does not add kernel isolation or guarantee that Android will never stop the process.
Use local networking first
Give each service a fixed local address or a hostname you control, and test access from a second device on the same Wi-Fi network. Port forwarding, public DNS and direct internet exposure add authentication, encryption and patching responsibilities that PRoot-Distro does not solve.
Watch the three common resource bottlenecks
- Storage: media, previews, caches, logs and databases grow independently.
- Heat and battery: video transcoding and repeated file scans are more demanding than simple direct streaming or occasional file access.
- Process lifetime: Android may reclaim background work; a service that works in a terminal is not automatically an always-on service.
When attached storage is the sensible upgrade
A USB-C OTG flash drive or small portable SSD can hold a persistent root filesystem, media, cache or backups while leaving internal phone storage available for Android. A USB-C hub with power delivery is useful when the phone must charge while storage is attached. Check your specific phone for OTG support, supported filesystems and sustained-write behavior before moving a live database or media library.
Which one should you run?
- Choose Jellyfin when your priority is streaming files on your home network and you can provide durable media and configuration storage.
- Choose Nextcloud when you need browser-based file access and sharing and are prepared to maintain persistent application and database data.
- Choose Syncthing only after confirming an ARM64 image, Android permissions and acceptable background-process behavior on your particular phone.
All three are useful experiments on spare hardware, but none should be mistaken for a conventional Docker host. PRoot-Distro’s user-space model makes these workloads possible; its missing isolation, kernel features and process guarantees define where they are safe and practical.
