Each symptom has several possible causes, so treat the checks below as a way to narrow things down—not as a diagnosis. Use the operator’s manual for your exact model, and stop if the saw is unsafe to handle or the basic checks do not solve the problem.
1. ECHO chainsaw won’t start or is hard to start
A no-start can come from fuel, ignition, air intake, exhaust restriction, or a flooded engine. ECHO’s general gas-engine guidance lists these as possible causes; it does not establish one universal diagnostic sequence for every chainsaw.

Check the fuel and starting procedure
- Use fresh fuel that is less than 30 days old, rated 89–93 octane, and free of water or debris, as ECHO recommends in its gas-engine starting guidance. Follow your model’s operator’s manual for the required fuel-oil mix and exact specifications.
- Repeatedly pulling with the choke closed after the engine fails to start can flood it. If you suspect flooding, use the recovery procedure in your manual rather than continuing to pull with the choke closed.
- Starting steps, including choke and purge-bulb use, vary by model. ECHO’s cold-start instructions say, “Do not start engine before chain brake is locked.” That page may not cover your exact saw, so do not combine its sequence with steps from another model’s manual. The chain may try to move when fast idle is engaged; do not rev the saw with the brake locked.
Inspect the basic systems only when safe
With the saw shut off and allowed to cool, check for an obviously dirty air filter, damaged or restricted fuel-system parts, or a loose ignition connection. ECHO also lists a fouled or incorrectly gapped spark plug and carbon buildup at the spark-arrestor screen or exhaust port as possible causes. Follow the manual for inspection and service procedures; do not work on hot components.

If these basic checks do not resolve the issue, a carburetor, ignition-module, or engine fault may require diagnosis by an authorized ECHO dealer.

2. ECHO chainsaw runs but won’t cut well
If the engine runs but cutting is slow, rough, or ineffective, inspect the cutting system before assuming the engine is at fault. A dull chain, chain installed in the wrong direction, poor lubrication, or incorrect tension can all impair cutting. ECHO’s DCS-5000 troubleshooting table names these causes for that battery-powered model; its directions are not automatically procedures for gas saws.
Check the chain, bar, and installation
- Look for a dull or damaged chain. Sharpen or replace it as the model manual directs; verify the replacement chain’s exact fit and specifications for your saw.
- Confirm the cutters face the correct direction, using the manual’s diagram for your model.
- Check chain tension and lubrication according to the manual. A chain that is too loose or not receiving oil can cut poorly and may be unsafe to operate.
- Inspect the guide bar and sprocket for damage or wear. ECHO’s maintenance guidance identifies damaged bars, worn sprockets, and uneven tension as possible contributors to erratic cutting.
The ECHO DCS-5000 operator’s manual says, “Do not let the guide bar and the chain operate without sufficient oil.” The principle matters across saws, but consult your own manual for the applicable checks and adjustments.

3. ECHO chainsaw chain isn’t getting oil or won’t stay tight
Bar-and-chain oil reduces friction between the chain and guide bar. Check the oil level and refill as needed, using the oil type and lubrication instructions specified by your saw’s manual. ECHO’s Standard Bar & Chain Oil is listed for ECHO chainsaws and power pruners; whichever suitable oil you use, follow the manual for your model.

- Shut the saw off before checking or adjusting chain tension. Tension procedures differ by model; use the exact manual rather than a generic adjustment method.
- Do not operate the saw with a loose chain. ECHO advises checking tension frequently.
- Some manuals describe a running oil-flow check. For example, the January 2025 CS-590 manual describes holding the saw over a dry surface and running it at half speed for 30 seconds; a thin line of oil should appear. Perform this only if your own manual directs it and you can use a safe, controlled setup. Do not try a running-saw check otherwise.
- Stop using the saw if the chain repeatedly loosens, jumps, or fails to receive oil. Have a dealer inspect it if the manual’s routine checks do not identify and resolve the problem.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop and seek authorized service when a problem persists after the basic, model-approved checks, or when resolving it may involve the carburetor, ignition module, engine, or another specialist component. Do not keep operating a saw with an unsafe chain, unreliable lubrication, or an unresolved fault.
