3 Beginner-Friendly Linux Distros to Consider If You’re New to Linux

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you’re new to Linux, start by matching the desktop and hardware requirements to your needs—not by looking for one distro that is easiest for everyone. Linux Mint is a strong fit for a familiar desktop and modest stated requirements; Ubuntu is a mainstream choice with an official USB tryout path; and Zorin OS offers different desktop editions, including a lightweight XFCE edition. The current releases and support details below were checked on October 3, 2026.

How to choose a beginner-friendly Linux distro

A Linux distribution, or distro, packages the Linux operating system with a desktop, applications and tools for installing updates. For someone moving from Windows, the desktop layout and the applications they depend on may matter as much as the distro’s name.

Before choosing, check the target computer’s processor, memory and free storage; identify any essential Windows-only applications and peripherals; and consider whether you can try the system from a USB drive before installing. Published minimum requirements do not guarantee that a particular Wi-Fi adapter, printer, game or application will work.

At a glance: Mint, Ubuntu and Zorin OS

Distro and current release Best starting point Published requirements Support information
Linux Mint 22.3 “Zena” People who want a traditional desktop and relatively modest stated requirements. Mint offers Cinnamon, MATE and Xfce editions. Minimum: 2 GB RAM, 20 GB storage and a 1024×768 display. Recommended: 4 GB RAM and 100 GB storage. Linux Mint project FAQ. Supported until April 2029, according to the project’s supported-version table.
Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS People who want a mainstream desktop and an official route to try it from USB before installing. 2 GHz dual-core processor or better, 6 GB memory and 25 GB free storage. Canonical’s Ubuntu Desktop page. Ubuntu 26.04 LTS standard security maintenance runs until May 2031; Canonical says LTS releases receive five years of free security and maintenance updates.
Zorin OS 18.1 People who want edition choices, including an XFCE-based Lite edition. Minimum: 1 GHz dual-core 64-bit Intel or AMD processor, 2 GB RAM and an 800×600 display. Storage varies by edition: 15 GB Core, 35 GB Education or 45 GB Pro. Software updates and security patches are listed through June 1, 2029.

Release and support information is from the Linux Mint project, Canonical/Ubuntu and Zorin pages current on October 3, 2026. Minimum requirements are not a promise of good performance: workload, drivers and the specific computer all matter.

Linux Mint: a familiar desktop with modest stated requirements

The Linux Mint project describes Mint as “designed to be comfortable and easy to use but also powerful and configurable” (Linux Mint FAQ, accessed October 3, 2026). That is the project’s description, not an independently measured ranking of ease of use.

Mint 22.3, codenamed “Zena,” is based on Ubuntu Noble and is an LTS release. The project’s supported-version table lists support through April 2029. Its three desktop editions—Cinnamon, MATE and Xfce—give you different interface options; the hardware figures in the comparison table are the project’s published general requirements.

Consider Mint if you want to explore Linux on a computer that falls below Ubuntu 26.04’s listed memory requirement, or if a traditional desktop is a priority. The lower published minimum does not establish that Mint will run well on every older machine, so try it on the actual hardware where possible.

Ubuntu: a mainstream desktop you can try from USB

Canonical lists Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS as its current desktop release. The Ubuntu 26.04 LTS lifecycle table gives standard security maintenance through May 2031, and Canonical describes LTS as receiving five years of free security and maintenance updates. Its listed hardware requirements—especially 6 GB of memory—make checking your computer important before downloading.

Ubuntu’s official installation guide outlines a straightforward sequence: download the ISO, use an image writer to create a bootable USB flash drive, then start the computer from that drive. Canonical says, “You can also run Ubuntu from a USB to try it without installing” (Download Ubuntu Desktop, accessed October 3, 2026). A USB flash drive for Linux installation can therefore serve as trial media as well as installation media.

A live USB trial lets you check whether the desktop starts and whether key hardware appears to work before replacing an operating system. It cannot guarantee that every application or peripheral will work after installation, and the guide does not establish a specific flash-drive brand or capacity as necessary.

Zorin OS 18.1 is based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, with updates and security patches listed through June 1, 2029. Its version details specify GNOME Shell for Core and Pro, and XFCE for Lite. This makes Zorin worth considering if the choice of desktop edition is important to you.

Zorin lists a 64-bit Intel or AMD processor requirement and edition-specific storage needs: 15 GB for Core, 35 GB for Education and 45 GB for Pro. Its compatibility notes say Apple silicon Macs cannot run Zorin OS natively, ARM-based Microsoft Surface devices are incompatible, some Intel/AMD Surface models need extra setup, and some Chromebooks cannot install it. Check the current Zorin requirements for your exact device before proceeding.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose Mint as your first candidate if you want a familiar, traditional desktop and the computer is closer to Mint’s published requirements than Ubuntu’s. Pick among Cinnamon, MATE and Xfce based on the interface you prefer, then test on the device.
  • Choose Ubuntu as your first candidate if you want Canonical’s mainstream desktop and its documented USB tryout route, and your machine meets the listed requirements.
  • Choose Zorin OS as your first candidate if its edition choices—especially Lite with XFCE—match what you want, after confirming device compatibility and the storage requirement for that edition.

None is a universal winner. The safest choice depends on the computer, the applications and peripherals you need, and the desktop you find comfortable.

Try Linux without immediately replacing your system

  1. Check your computer first. Note its processor architecture, RAM, available storage and display resolution. Compare those details with the chosen distro’s current official requirements.
  2. List what must keep working. Check essential applications, printers, Wi-Fi adapters, games and other peripherals for Linux compatibility. A distro’s general requirements do not certify support for your particular devices or software.
  3. Back up important files. Make a separate copy before changing partitions or replacing the existing operating system.
  4. Create and boot a live USB. For Ubuntu, follow Canonical’s official guide to download the ISO, write it to USB and start the computer from the drive. Use a USB trial to check the desktop and important hardware before installing; menu names and boot procedures vary by computer.
  5. Install only when you are ready. Read the installer’s disk and partition choices carefully. If the option you intend to use is unclear, stop rather than risk erasing files or the existing operating system.
