240Hz vs. 144Hz: Is the Upgrade Worth It for Gaming?

A 240Hz monitor can benefit competitive players with sustained high frame rates, but refresh rate alone does not guarantee better performance. Here’s how to weigh it against 144Hz.

240Hz is worth considering if you play competitive games, your PC can sustain frame rates above 144 FPS, and the monitor delivers good motion clarity and input performance. The higher refresh rate shortens the display’s refresh interval, but it does not make a game render at 240 FPS or guarantee better results. If your frame rate is usually below 144 FPS—or you would have to compromise on resolution or panel quality—a strong 144Hz monitor may be the better choice.

What changes when you go from 144Hz to 240Hz?

Refresh rate, measured in hertz (Hz), is how often a display can refresh its image. Frame rate, measured in frames per second (FPS), is how quickly a computer or console produces new frames. They are related but not interchangeable: a 240Hz monitor does not make a game run at 240 FPS.

At 144Hz, the display refreshes about every 6.94 milliseconds; at 240Hz, about every 4.17 milliseconds. That gives the 240Hz screen more frequent opportunities to show a new frame. RTINGS calculates theoretical minimum center-screen input lag of 3.47 ms at 144Hz and 2.09 ms at 240Hz, based on half a refresh interval. These are timing limits, not measured input-lag promises for every monitor or the total delay from your controls to the screen. RTINGS explains refresh rate and its effects, and its input-test methodology describes the minimum-lag calculation.

The step from 144Hz to 240Hz is measurable, but its display-side timing gain is smaller than the gain from moving up from lower refresh rates. Whether you notice it depends on the game, the frame rate you actually sustain, the monitor’s motion performance, and your own sensitivity to motion differences. NVIDIA’s overview of FPS and refresh rate also distinguishes what the system renders from what the display can show.

Who is most likely to benefit from 240Hz?

Competitive players with high, stable frame rates

The clearest case is a player of fast competitive games—especially FPS games—whose system regularly produces well over 144 FPS and who values responsive, smooth motion. A 240Hz display can present updates more frequently in that situation. The practical value is weaker if frame rates often fall below 144 FPS, because the system is not consistently supplying new frames at a rate that takes full advantage of the display.

Research offers evidence that a higher refresh rate can help in some aiming tasks, but not a guarantee of better results in every game. A 2019 study by Joohwan Kim and colleagues tested target-clicking at 60Hz, 120Hz, and 240Hz, using targets with a visual size of 1 degree, movement speed of 5 degrees per second, and direction changes 1.5 times per second. The authors reported performance improving with refresh rate and concluded that 240Hz provided an advantage for the tasks studied. NVIDIA Research summarizes the study and its scope.

  • Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.

Players who should prioritize other monitor qualities

If you mainly play slower-paced games, or your PC rarely exceeds 144 FPS, a 240Hz upgrade may matter less than resolution, image quality, or a monitor with better motion handling. This is a practical decision based on the refresh-rate and frame-rate relationship, not a universal buying rule. A 144Hz monitor can be the more sensible option if it lets you choose a better-performing panel or avoid a compromise elsewhere.

Why the Hz number does not tell the whole story

Two monitors with the same advertised refresh rate can perform differently. Pixel response time affects how quickly pixels change, while input lag measures delay through the display. Neither is established by the refresh-rate figure alone, and an advertised response-time number is not equivalent to measured total input lag. Motion clarity, resolution, variable refresh rate (VRR), and the monitor’s input connections also matter. RTINGS’ refresh-rate guide discusses why monitor performance involves more than maximum Hz.

  • 1ms Response Time: Colors fade and illuminate instantly with a 1ms response time, eliminating ghosting and piecing together precise imagery during action-packed scenes and gaming.
  • 1500R Curvature: The 1500R degree curved design immerses you into all of the action no matter where you choose to sit in the room.
  • AMD FreeSync Premium: By accelerating the frame rate to at least 120Hz at 1080P FHD resolution and delivering low latency to prevent visible delay in data processing, AMD FreeSync Premium allows gameplay to reach the highest echelons of performance.
  • Built-In Speakers: Perfectly suited to work & gaming settings, built-in speakers deliver robust & smooth audio while saving space on your desk.
  • Response and motion clarity: Look for independent measurements at the refresh rate and settings you intend to use; a higher-Hz panel is not automatically faster in pixel transitions.
  • Input lag: Compare measured results rather than treating a manufacturer’s response-time specification as a total-latency figure.
  • Resolution at the desired refresh rate: Confirm the monitor supports the resolution and 240Hz mode you want at the same time.
  • VRR: Variable refresh rate can match display timing to changing frame rates and help reduce tearing when the monitor, GPU or console, and connection all support the relevant mode. NVIDIA describes how VRR relates to frame-rate fluctuations.
  • Ports and bandwidth: Check the monitor and graphics-source specifications for the exact resolution-and-refresh combination. Do not assume any HDMI or DisplayPort connection supports every advertised mode.

NVIDIA’s G-SYNC monitor listing notes that listed monitors are tested for quality and compatibility; compatibility still depends on the specific model and system.

What do studies say about gaming performance?

The evidence is task-dependent, not a universal verdict for all players. Kim and colleagues’ 2019 controlled target-clicking study found an advantage as refresh rate increased across its tested conditions. By contrast, the abstract of a 2024 preprint, Investigating the Effect of Display Refresh Rate on First-Person Shooting Games, describes an FPS experiment with 26 participants and conditions of 30Hz, 60Hz, 120Hz, 144Hz, and 240Hz; it reports a significant performance effect only at 30Hz. The preprint abstract should be treated as a study-specific result, not definitive proof that refresh rates above 30Hz never matter.

Together, these findings support a cautious conclusion: faster refresh can help under some controlled aiming conditions, but the available results do not establish that every player will perform better at 240Hz in real matches. No representative market survey establishes what share of gamers benefits from the upgrade.

How to decide whether the upgrade is worth it for you

  1. Check your real frame rates. Look at sustained performance in the games you actually play, not just a peak benchmark. If you rarely exceed 144 FPS, the extra refresh capacity is less likely to be useful.
  2. Compare the complete monitors. Check native resolution at the refresh rate you want, measured input lag, pixel response and motion clarity, VRR support and range, and the ports needed by your system.
  3. Weigh the trade-off. If choosing 240Hz means giving up a more important improvement—such as resolution or better panel performance—a strong 144Hz alternative may suit you better.
  4. Confirm the full connection path. Verify that your GPU or console, the monitor’s selected input, and the cable or port support the desired resolution and refresh mode.
