24/7 YouTube Streaming Cost on DigitalOcean: Basic vs. CPU-Optimized

DigitalOcean lists its example Basic Droplet at $6/month and entry CPU-Optimized Droplet at $42/month. Compare compute, transfer, and what those prices do—and do not—cover.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a Droplet left deployed all month, DigitalOcean’s listed Basic 1 GiB / 1 vCPU configuration costs $6 per month, while its entry CPU-Optimized 4 GiB / 2 vCPU configuration costs $42 per month. At those unchanged list prices, twelve months of compute would be $72 or $504, respectively. These are Droplet plan costs—not guaranteed all-in YouTube streaming costs. Transfer overages and other services can add charges, and the cited prices do not establish which plan can sustain a particular stream.

What the two DigitalOcean plans cost

DigitalOcean’s official pricing page, checked on October 3, 2026, lists the following representative configurations. The monthly figures are the useful comparison for a Droplet kept deployed continuously; the hourly prices are also shown for reference.

Plan CPU RAM / vCPU Included transfer Listed hourly rate Listed monthly price
Basic Shared 1 GiB / 1 1,000 GiB $0.00893 $6
CPU-Optimized Dedicated 4 GiB / 2 4,000 GiB $0.06250 $42

The CPU-Optimized example costs seven times as much per month as the cited Basic example. It also has four times the RAM, twice the vCPUs, and four times the included transfer allowance, so this is not a like-for-like resource comparison. See DigitalOcean Droplet pricing.

What 24/7 compute costs over a year

At the listed monthly prices, the arithmetic for twelve months is $6 × 12 = $72 for Basic and $42 × 12 = $504 for CPU-Optimized. That is a $36 monthly difference, or $432 over twelve months. These are calculations from the listed rates, not separately published annual plans. They assume the prices do not change and exclude add-ons, taxes, and outbound transfer charges beyond the applicable included pool.

  • 8-core GPU with up to 6x faster graphics for graphics-intensive apps and games*
  • 16-core Neural Engine for advanced machine learning
  • 8GB of unified memory so everything you do is fast and fluid

DigitalOcean says bundled CPU Droplets are billed per second, subject to a 60-second or $0.01 minimum, with usage capped at 672 hours per month. As a result, multiplying the displayed hourly rate by every hour in a calendar month does not give the practical full-month comparison; use the monthly cap for a Droplet that remains deployed all month. A powered-off Droplet still incurs compute charges because its resources remain reserved. Destroying it stops compute billing. DigitalOcean documents Droplet billing and transfer pricing.

Transfer charges are separate from the plan comparison

The example Basic configuration includes 1,000 GiB of transfer and the CPU-Optimized configuration includes 4,000 GiB. DigitalOcean pools outbound transfer across a team’s Droplets rather than treating each Droplet’s allowance as an isolated budget. Inbound transfer is free; outbound transfer beyond the team’s included pool is priced at $0.01 per GiB.

For a streaming setup, actual outbound usage depends on the stream’s bitrate, how it is delivered, and other Droplets’ use of the shared pool. The cited official material does not give a bitrate or audience architecture for this comparison, so it cannot support a reliable monthly streaming-data estimate. Treat the plan price as the compute line, not a complete estimate of the YouTube operation’s bill.

Which plan fits a streaming workload?

Basic: lower cost, shared CPU

DigitalOcean positions Basic as a lower-cost choice for workloads that underuse dedicated threads and can tolerate variable CPU levels. It may be the economical candidate when the actual process fits shared CPU, but its lower price does not prove it will sustain a particular encoder or stream process.

CPU-Optimized: dedicated CPU for sustained work

DigitalOcean describes CPU-Optimized Droplets as using fast, dedicated vCPUs and says they are optimal for applications demanding fast, consistent performance, including media streaming. Its documentation describes the family as having roughly a 2:1 memory-to-CPU ratio. This is provider guidance, not a YouTube-specific minimum specification or a measured comparison against Basic.

The higher tier may be worth considering when the workload needs sustained CPU capacity or performs CPU-heavy encoding or transcoding. The available figures do not establish that every 24/7 YouTube stream needs dedicated CPU. Choose based on the actual processing workload rather than the plan label alone. How to budget without mistaking plan price for total cost

  1. Choose the configuration to evaluate. The listed examples are Basic at $6 per month and entry CPU-Optimized at $42 per month; they differ in CPU type, RAM, vCPU count, and included transfer.
  2. Use the monthly cap for continuous deployment. For an all-month Droplet, compare the monthly price rather than multiplying its hourly rate across calendar hours.
  3. Account for pooled transfer. Estimate actual outbound usage and compare it with the team’s shared included pool. Excess outbound transfer is billed at $0.01 per GiB.
  4. Add anything outside the compute line. The figures above exclude add-ons, taxes, and any applicable transfer overage.
  5. Stop charges correctly when finished. Powering off is not enough to stop Droplet compute billing; destroy the Droplet if you no longer need it.
