There is no universal cheapest option: compare the Raspberry Pi 4’s measured whole-system power draw and your local electricity tariff with a VPS’s compute price, outbound-traffic allowance, and any overage charges. At a continuous 6 Mbps, a 30-day YouTube stream sends about 1.94 decimal TB before protocol overhead—enough to make a low-cost VPS plan’s bandwidth limit decisive. Pi power figures published for other workloads are useful context, not a measurement of a 24/7 FFmpeg stream.
How to compare the real monthly cost
Use the same stream settings and billing period for both options. A convenient average month is 730 hours; for a specific billing cycle, use its actual hours or days.

- Pi first-year total: board, suitable power supply, boot media, other required setup costs, first-year electricity, and any incremental connectivity cost. If you already own the Pi, keep its past purchase cost separate from the decision about future running cost. For a new purchase, state the period over which you spread its cost.
- VPS recurring total: compute-plan price plus outbound-transfer charges or a plan upgrade, storage, IPv4, taxes, and other charges that apply to the selected provider and plan.
These totals answer different questions: the first-year figure includes equipment you buy, while the VPS figure is recurring rental cost. For a fair comparison, make the period and included costs explicit.
What a Raspberry Pi 4’s power figures do—and do not—tell you
Raspberry Pi’s published measurements for the Pi 4 report average currents of 0.6 A at idle, 0.78 A during H.264 video playback, and 1.2 A under stress. At nominal 5 V, those correspond to approximately 3.0 W, 3.9 W, and 6.0 W. These are illustrative conversions of approximate currents, not FFmpeg YouTube-stream measurements. The documented setup had an HDMI monitor, keyboard, and mouse attached, with Ethernet on the Pi 4; Raspberry Pi warns that additional USB devices can raise consumption. A headless system running your particular FFmpeg command may draw differently. Measure the actual setup at the wall, including its power supply, storage, and peripherals. The recommended Pi 4 power supply is rated at 5 V, 3 A, or 15 W. That is its recommended capacity, not a claim that the board continuously consumes 15 W. Raspberry Pi power-supply guidance
For scale, if a measured setup averages 5 W for a 730-hour month, it uses 3.65 kWh (5 ÷ 1,000 × 730). Multiply that by your own tariff to estimate the electricity charge. This is an example calculation, not a claimed Pi streaming measurement.

For a constant video bitrate, estimate decimal bytes sent as bitrate in bits per second × seconds in the billing period ÷ 8. Add audio bitrate and allow for protocol overhead when comparing with a provider’s billable outbound traffic. YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates vary by resolution and frame rate: 3 Mbps for 480p30, 5 Mbps for 1080p30, 6 Mbps for 720p60, and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. | Continuous video bitrate | Estimated transfer in 30 days | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| 5 Mbps | About 1.62 decimal TB | Bitrate arithmetic; video only, before protocol overhead |
| 6 Mbps | About 1.94 decimal TB | Bitrate arithmetic; video only, before protocol overhead |
| 17 Mbps | About 5.51 decimal TB | Bitrate arithmetic; video only, before protocol overhead |
For example, 6,000,000 bits/s × 86,400 seconds/day × 30 days ÷ 8 equals 1,944,000,000,000 bytes, or about 1.94 decimal TB. This is arithmetic for the assumed continuous bitrate, not a separate traffic measurement. Check how your provider counts egress, what happens when the included allowance is exceeded, and whether it applies burst limits or other conditions.
A VPS price is only useful alongside its transfer allowance
VPS.org’s listed plans illustrate why bandwidth belongs in the comparison. Its page, accessed in 2026, advertised a $2.50/month starter plan with 1 vCPU, 0.5 GB RAM, 10 GB SSD, and 0.5 TB bandwidth, and a $10/month plan with 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, 40 GB SSD, and 2 TB bandwidth. These are one provider’s listed plans, not market averages. VPS.org plans
Against the arithmetic above, the starter plan’s stated allowance is inadequate for a 6 Mbps stream if the stream’s egress counts toward it. The 2 TB plan leaves little room beyond an estimated 1.94 decimal TB of video in a 30-day month, before audio or protocol overhead. Confirm current plan terms, architecture, performance, and overage policy with the provider. Whether a VPS has enough CPU to run your chosen FFmpeg encoding configuration also depends on the workload and plan; the listed specifications alone do not establish that it will.

- KEEP YOUR PROCESSOR COOL: The busier a processor gets the more it heats up, leading to sub-optimal performance. To prevent this common issue, this kit includes an aluminum alloy case with a pre-installed fan. The aluminum alloy actively draws the heat from the pi board, while the fan further cools the board and case. These cooling mechanisms will help push the limits of your processor and increase its flexibility.
- SIZABLE RAM: This Raspberry Pi 4 comes equipped with 4GB of RAM, which is the same amount of RAM or more RAM than many mainstream laptops contain. With 4GB of RAM, your processor will be capable of running retro gaming setups and common computer applications, media players, and much more!
- SIMPLE TO TURN ON & OFF: This kit includes a USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 compatible power supply with an easy-to-use on/off switch that was designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi 4 model to streamline processing.
- IMPROVEMENTS FROM PREVIOUS MODELS: This latest model of the Raspberry Pi 4 offers groundbreaking increases in processor speed, multimedia performance, connectivity, memory, and more! The desktop performance of this model is comparable to entry-level x86 PC systems.
- VERSATILE USE: The Raspberry Pi may have a small processor, but it is a highly adaptable little computer that can replace your desktop PC. Its functions range from practical to nostalgic since it can power an ad-blocking server as easily as it can power an outmoded gaming setup. Other uses include but are not limited to printing from non-wireless printers, playing media, making time-lapse videos, and building multiplayer network game servers and motion-capture security systems.
Include Pi purchase cost only when it applies to you
The Raspberry Pi 4 product page lists 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB, and 8 GB models and a starting price of “From $35.” That is not a universal quote for each memory variant, region, reseller, power supply, or complete setup. Raspberry Pi 4 product page
For timely price context, Eben Upton wrote on 1 October 2026 that “from today we are increasing the price of the 2GB variants by $12.50, to $67.50 for Raspberry Pi 4 and $77.50 for Raspberry Pi 5.” He also said prices for the 1 GB variants remained unchanged in that announcement. Check local availability and the actual cost of the complete setup rather than treating a starting price or announced variant price as a universal total. Raspberry Pi News
If you own a Pi already, its purchase cost is sunk for the running-cost comparison; account for electricity and any new accessories or connectivity instead. If buying one for this purpose, include the board, a suitable 5 V/3 A USB-C supply, boot media, and other necessary items, then state your amortization period. The power-supply rating describes capacity, not the board’s expected continuous draw.

Choose based on your measured setup and operating trade-offs
- A Pi may make sense when you already own suitable hardware, can measure a low whole-system draw, have reliable home power and internet, and can manage the system yourself. Its electricity cost depends on your meter reading and tariff, not an assumed wattage.
- A VPS may make sense when you want a rented server rather than hardware at home and find a plan whose compute capability, included egress, and overage terms fit your bitrate. Do not decide from the headline CPU price alone.
- Neither option wins on resilience by evidence here. A Pi depends on home power and connectivity; a VPS depends on its provider and region. Those are practical differences, not a measured uptime comparison.
Before committing, calculate the traffic for your actual bitrate, measure the Pi while the intended stream is running, and confirm the provider’s billing rules. No published figures cited here certify that a specific Pi 4 and FFmpeg configuration can sustain a particular resolution or frame rate continuously.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use YouTube’s ingest settings as a target, then test your own encoder
YouTube’s live guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest and supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 in its stated settings. It recommends constant-bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds, with bitrate ranges that vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube transcodes live ingest into formats for viewers, but that does not certify a Pi’s encoding performance. Consult the current settings for the exact codec and output you intend to use. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test representative motion and audio, then monitor stream health during the broadcast. Choose a bitrate that suits the intended output and your network; the transfer estimates above assume a continuous video bitrate and exclude overhead.
