To estimate the electricity cost of running a Mac mini for a 24/7 YouTube playlist stream, measure the configured setup’s average power draw at the wall, then calculate average watts ÷ 1,000 × 8,760 × your electricity rate per kWh. The result depends on your actual streaming workload and local tariff—not just the Mac mini model. Compare that figure with a cloud or managed-service bill that includes the compute, data transfer, storage, and upkeep the stream requires.
Calculate the Mac mini’s annual electricity cost
Use the machine’s average power draw while it is running the stream, in watts, and your electricity price per kilowatt-hour:

Annual cost = average watts ÷ 1,000 × 8,760 × local price per kWh
For a 30-day month, use average watts × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000 to find kilowatt-hours, then multiply by your local rate. The formula estimates energy use; it does not include the Mac mini’s purchase price, depreciation, network equipment, separate displays or peripherals, or additional cooling.

Measure the streaming setup, not just the computer’s idle rating
Apple lists wall-power measurements for the 2024 M4 Mac mini of 4 W idle and 65 W maximum. Apple defines idle as Finder open with default power-management settings, while maximum comes from a compute-intensive test. Neither figure measures a continuous YouTube stream. For a useful estimate, measure the configured Mac mini while it runs the playlist and encoder at the settings you intend to use. A wall meter can capture the computer’s draw; include other equipment only if you are also calculating the whole setup’s electricity cost.
Illustrative U.S. calculation
At a steady 4 W, annual energy use is 35.04 kWh; at 65 W, it is 569.4 kWh. Using the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s 2025 residential average of $0.173/kWh, those values work out to about $6.06 and $98.51 per year, respectively. These are arithmetic illustrations based on Apple’s idle and maximum reference measurements—not measured streaming consumption or a prediction of an individual household bill. The EIA’s May 2026 figure was 18.44 cents/kWh; regional and household rates differ, so use the rate on your applicable electricity bill for your own estimate. Compare the full cost of cloud hosting
Do not compare a cloud server’s advertised entry price with the Mac mini’s electricity bill alone. Check whether the service can sustain your chosen stream and include transfer, storage, administration, and the time or fees needed to keep it running.
An entry-level cloud bundle is not automatically stream-ready
Amazon Web Services’ current Lightsail documentation lists a Linux/Unix public-IPv4 bundle at $5 per month with 2 vCPUs, 0.5 GB memory, 20 GB storage, and 1 TB of transfer. That is an entry price, not evidence that the instance can encode your particular video and stream settings or that a 24/7 workload will fit within its transfer allowance. Check the workload’s CPU and memory use, transfer accounting and any overage costs, storage needs, and your ability to administer and recover the server. Compare like with like
- Power: Use the Mac mini’s measured continuous draw and your actual marginal electricity rate.
- Cloud bill: Include the instance or managed-service fee, storage, and data transfer or overages.
- Stream fit: Confirm the option can encode and sustain the selected resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
- Reliability and effort: Account for recovery after a disconnect, monitoring, updates, administration, and how much control you need.
- Hardware: If you need to buy a Mac mini for this job, include its acquisition cost and depreciation; if you already own one, distinguish that sunk purchase from ongoing operating cost.
A self-hosted Mac mini can make sense when you already have the hardware, its measured draw is modest, and you are comfortable managing the stream and connection. Cloud hosting may be preferable when keeping a computer and home connection running is undesirable, but only after verifying workload fit and the complete bill. Neither option is universally cheaper.
Configure YouTube’s live encoder for a playlist stream
YouTube’s setup instructions say to enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in your encoder. Its encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Choose codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to suit the source video and the quality you plan to send. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 among supported encoder codecs. YouTube transcodes a live stream into viewer formats, but that does not replace the need for a correctly configured upstream encoder or a stable internet connection.

- Set up the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and use its displayed server URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not control your broadcast.
- Configure the encoder. Enter the YouTube server URL and stream key. Select RTMPS where available, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval (never more than four seconds). Match resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to the playlist and your intended stream quality.
- Start and verify the broadcast. Start the encoder or playlist output, then check YouTube’s live control room for incoming video and audio and any connection warnings. Confirm the playlist advances as intended and that the stream remains live.
- Plan for archive limits. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will be archived in full; do not rely on a complete archive of a continuous day-long stream.
Keep rights to the video, music, and other material in the playlist. A continuous broadcast does not exempt content from YouTube’s copyright or monetization rules. Check the permissions for each item and YouTube’s current policies before streaming; do not assume that owning a recording or finding it online grants live-streaming rights.

- Measure before deciding: A real workload measurement gives a more defensible electricity estimate than Apple’s idle or maximum reference figures.
- Use your own tariff: National averages are context, not a substitute for your bill’s applicable rate.
