For dependable 24/7 recording, choose a camera or system that explicitly supports continuous recording, then match its power, storage and recorder capacity to your installation. The Reolink Duo 3 PoE and TP-Link Omada T8S4-4T are two manufacturer-documented examples, but the available specifications do not establish an objectively best camera across image quality, reliability and value.
What to look for in a 24/7 security camera
Continuous recording captures footage around the clock; motion-triggered recording saves clips only when activity is detected. A camera that offers motion alerts is not necessarily capable of continuous recording. Confirm the feature on the exact model and check whether it is available with the storage method you intend to use.

- Recording mode: Look for explicit 24/7 or continuous-recording support, not just motion detection. Reolink’s guide describes continuous recording cameras for 24/7 security.
- Power and connection: For a system that should stay on, plan around a reliable, constant-power connection. Reolink describes wired PoE and plug-in categories, as well as selected battery-powered models; its guide presents constant-power wired cameras as the suitable long-term approach for always-on recording. - Storage path: Check whether footage goes to a camera microSD card, a network video recorder (NVR), FTP or another supported destination—and whether recording continues if one destination is unavailable.
- Camera count and compatibility: Confirm the recorder’s channel limit and that it supports the specific cameras. A maximum channel count does not establish compatibility with every camera.
- Retention needs: Select capacity based on the actual number of cameras and recording settings. Drive capacity alone cannot establish how many days of footage you will keep.

Wired PoE or a complete camera kit?
Choose a wired PoE camera when you need flexibility
A standalone wired camera can suit an installation where you want to choose the recorder or storage path separately. The Reolink Duo 3 PoE is one documented example: the manufacturer lists continuous recording and microSD, NVR and FTP storage. Its 16MP dual-lens design and 180° view are stated specifications, not proof of superior real-world image quality or coverage in every mounting position. Check the camera’s field of view against the area, mounting height and obstructions you need to cover.

Choose a bundled system when its included components fit
The TP-Link Omada T8S4-4T combines four PoE cameras with an NVR and specifies 24/7 recording. Its stated 4TB included drive, expansion to 16TB and camera microSD support up to 512GB are model-specific capacities—not a guarantee of a particular retention period. A bundle reduces the number of separate components to select, but still verify that its camera count and storage arrangements fit your layout.
How to estimate storage without guessing retention
Do not translate a drive size into a promised number of recording days unless you have a validated estimate for the actual configuration. Retention varies with camera count, resolution, frame rate, compression and recording settings; the cited specifications do not give a validated cross-configuration retention estimate.

- List the cameras that will record and confirm each one’s resolution and supported recording settings.
- Decide whether every camera records continuously or whether some use a different schedule or mode.
- Choose the destination—camera card, NVR or FTP—and verify the supported capacity for the exact model.
- Use the manufacturer’s calculator or storage guidance, if available for your exact configuration, or measure actual storage consumption after installation.
- Allow for the footage you need to retain and confirm how the system behaves when storage fills, including whether it overwrites older video.
Check recorder capacity and camera compatibility
Recorder channel limits describe how many cameras a recorder is specified to support, not whether every camera will work with it. Reolink specifies the NVS16 for up to 24 IP cameras, with no more than 16 wired cameras. The cited product information does not establish universal cross-model compatibility.
- Confirm the exact camera models appear in the recorder’s supported-camera information or obtain confirmation from the manufacturer.
- Check both the total camera limit and any separate limit for wired cameras.
- Verify whether the recorder’s drive capacity and expansion options meet your storage plan.
- Confirm that the camera and recorder support the recording mode and storage destination you intend to use.
What these specifications do—and do not—tell you
Manufacturer pages establish the features and capacities they claim for specific products. They do not provide independent comparative tests of image quality, reliability or value. The product examples above therefore should not be read as winners in those categories. Availability and specifications can change; check the current product page and recording support for the exact model before buying.
