That is a fair description of the redesign, but not proof that every observer or classification system will stop calling the Outback a wagon. Its crossover identity—and its name—remain.
Why the 2026 Outback looks less like a wagon
The shift is primarily one of shape and positioning. Independent coverage describes the new Outback as taller and boxier than the previous generation, while Subaru’s U.S. materials classify it as an AWD midsize SUV. The automaker’s own account of the nameplate’s history is more blended: Subaru Corporation says the Outback has combined passenger-car and SUV attributes since its debut in 1995. The new model pushes that balance visibly toward the SUV side without making the wagon label universally wrong.

The 2026 vehicle is the seventh generation. Subaru revealed it in April 2025 and planned U.S. availability for late that year. Subaru of America reported that more than 3 million Outbacks had been sold in the United States alone as of April 2025. Subaru Corporation’s announcement describes the model’s crossover history; Subaru of America’s reveal release gives the launch timing and sales figure.

The 2026 brochure lists the standard Outback at 191.7 inches long, 74 inches wide excluding mirrors, and 67.5 inches high, with a 108.1-inch wheelbase. Wilderness is listed at 68.3 inches high. Those are production-oriented specifications from Subaru’s 2026 Outback brochure; they help establish the new vehicle’s proportions, but a matching prior-generation dimensional baseline is not available here, so a numeric before-and-after size comparison would be misleading.

The ground-clearance and cargo figures are useful context for the SUV positioning, but they do not establish how the vehicle drives or how much cargo fits in a particular real-world load. The brochure’s roof-rail figures distinguish static from dynamic capacity; those terms describe different loading conditions and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Which trims get the turbo engine and higher towing limit?
Subaru lists six U.S. trims. Premium, Limited, and Touring use the 180-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder and have a published 2,700-pound towing capacity. Limited XT, Touring XT, and Wilderness use a 260-hp turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder and are rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds. Wilderness also has the higher published ground clearance. The figures below are from Subaru’s 2026 brochure and apply by trim; they are not claims that every Outback has the turbo engine, higher clearance, or higher tow rating.

What this review can—and cannot—tell you
The available published information supports a design and specification assessment, not a road test. It does not establish fuel economy from direct testing, instrumented acceleration or braking results, or driving impressions. Nor does it provide current transaction prices. The launch announcement identified its technical details as preliminary and subject to change before production, so the figures in this article come from Subaru’s later model-year brochure instead.

For someone deciding whether the redesign is still a wagon, the answer depends on what the label means to them: its stance and styling have moved toward an SUV, while Subaru’s historical description still treats the Outback as a crossover blending car and SUV attributes.
