The 2026 Mac mini comes in two distinct tiers: the M6 starts at $899 in the U.S., while the M5 Pro starts at $1,699. Choose M6 for a lower-cost desktop with up to 32GB of unified memory and 2TB of storage; choose M5 Pro if your work benefits from more CPU/GPU capacity, up to 64GB of memory, up to 8TB of storage, or Thunderbolt 5. Both support up to three external displays. Apple began selling the models on September 22, 2026.
What changed in the 2026 Mac mini?
Apple announced the M6 and M5 Pro Mac mini on August 25, 2026, and made them available on September 22 through Apple Store locations, its online store, and the Apple Store app. The main distinction is not simply a faster-versus-slower choice: the two chips come with different memory, storage, and Thunderbolt ceilings, as well as different starting prices.

Apple positions M6 for everyday computing, creative work, and on-device AI, while M5 Pro is aimed at more demanding creative and technical workloads. That positioning is useful, but it is not a substitute for independent workload testing: the performance figures available here are Apple’s own comparisons.

Which Mac mini fits your work?
Choose M6 for everyday and moderate creative work
M6 is the more affordable entry point and can be configured with up to 32GB of unified memory and a 2TB SSD. It is a sensible fit for general desktop use, typical productivity, and creative work that does not require the higher memory or storage limits of M5 Pro. Its three rear Thunderbolt 4 ports may also be sufficient if your accessories do not require Thunderbolt 5.
Choose M5 Pro for higher capacity and demanding workflows
M5 Pro costs more at entry but starts with 24GB of memory and a 512GB SSD, and it can be configured up to 64GB and 8TB. Its higher CPU/GPU configurations and 307GB/s memory bandwidth may suit workloads that can use additional compute, memory, or local storage. Thunderbolt 5 is another reason to consider it if your workflow depends on that generation of connectivity.

Make the decision around the configuration you will actually use
Compare the price of the memory and storage you need, not just the two base prices. If your required configuration pushes M6 to its capacity limits, M5 Pro may be the better fit; if it does not, the M6’s lower starting price and capabilities may make it the more practical choice. Neither model is universally better, and Apple’s published claims do not establish how either performs in every specific application.
What performance gains does Apple claim?
Apple’s August 25, 2026 announcement says M6 delivers up to 4x faster AI performance than the Mac mini with M4, up to 2x faster graphics, and 40 percent faster CPU performance. Apple also reports up to 13.5x faster LLM prompt processing in LM Studio versus M1 and up to 4.8x versus M4; up to 2.3x faster spreadsheet calculations in Microsoft Excel versus M1 and up to 1.5x versus M4; and up to 2x faster ray-traced gaming in Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition versus M4.
