There is no standard salary for 20 years of coding experience. Pay depends on the work you do, your level of responsibility, where you work, and whether a benchmark counts salary alone or total compensation. Current public data offers useful comparisons, but none of the figures below is a direct estimate for every developer with exactly 20 years in the field.
What do current benchmarks show?
Stack Overflow’s 2026 Developer Survey reports median yearly salaries in U.S. dollars alongside respondents’ mean years of professional experience. Its role figures are not limited to people with 20 years of experience.

| Role or group | Median yearly salary | Mean professional experience | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engineering manager | $133,263 | 18.5 years | Role-level survey median, not a salary specifically for people with 20 years’ experience |
| Software or solutions architect | $102,355 | 20.1 years | Role-level survey median; the mean experience is close to 20 years, but this is not an exact 20-year cohort |
| Back-end developer | $85,296 | 14.5 years | Role-level survey median |
| Full-stack developer | $79,610 | 13.9 years | Role-level survey median |
These values come from the survey’s compensation-by-role data. They show why years alone are a poor salary predictor: roles with different responsibilities have different medians, and the experience figures describe the mean for each role’s respondents rather than a pay band for a specific tenure.
How much does location change the comparison?
Stack Overflow’s 2026 country table reports a $154,000 median yearly salary for U.S. respondents, whose mean professional experience was 17.4 years. For respondents in the United Kingdom, it reports $96,333 and 17.8 mean years; for India, $18,802 and 8.8 mean years. These are broad country-level respondent groups, not matched comparisons of developers in the same role with 20 years of experience.

The figures are in U.S. dollars and should not be read as a direct measure of local purchasing power or as a metro-specific pay estimate. See the survey’s compensation-by-country data for the country-level figures.
Why salary and total compensation are not interchangeable
Stack Overflow labels its figures median yearly salary. Levels.fyi reports U.S. software-engineer total compensation, a different measure that can include components beyond base salary. Its benchmarks show a median total compensation of $261,000 at 10 years and $292,000 at 12 years, based on data for the 12 months to September 2026. Those values are not salary-only figures, and they do not establish a median for 20 years of experience.

Levels.fyi also reports U.S. software-engineer total-compensation medians of $283,000 at L3 and $350,000 at L4. This illustrates how level can affect compensation, but years of experience do not automatically determine a person’s level. These platform benchmarks use a different data source and measure from the Stack Overflow survey, so the figures should not be averaged or treated as directly comparable. Details are on the Levels.fyi compensation benchmarks page.
Does 20 years make someone a senior or staff engineer?
Not by itself. Tenure describes time spent in the profession; seniority reflects the scope and level of the work, and employers use titles differently. A long-tenured developer may focus on hands-on implementation, lead architecture across teams, manage engineers, or take another path. The available benchmarks do not map a particular number of years to a title or compensation level.
Rank #3
When comparing pay, look at the responsibilities attached to the role—such as technical direction, project scope, cross-team influence, or people management—rather than assuming that a given title means the same thing at every employer.

Use public figures as reference points, not as a personal appraisal. To make a comparison useful, line up the factors that most affect the result:
Rank #4
- Keep track of everything from attendance to test scores
- Spiral bound
- Measures 8-1/2" x 11"
- Geography: Compare the relevant country and, when available, the same metro area.
- Role and specialization: Match your work as closely as possible, such as back-end development, architecture, infrastructure, or engineering management.
- Level and scope: Compare responsibilities and organizational impact, not just job-title wording.
- Compensation definition: Keep base salary separate from total compensation, including any bonus or equity.
- Data population and period: Check whether a figure comes from survey respondents or submitted compensation records and note the period it covers.
The sources here do not provide a benchmark that combines all of those factors for an individual with exactly 20 years of coding experience. A useful estimate therefore requires a closer match to your location, role, level, employer context, and compensation mix than tenure alone can provide.
