Use 5 GHz for a nearby, compatible device when higher potential speed matters. Choose 2.4 GHz when you need more coverage, have obstacles between the device and router, or are connecting a device that supports only 2.4 GHz. Neither band guarantees a particular internet speed: distance, walls, interference, equipment, and your internet service all affect the result.
2.4 GHz vs. 5 GHz Wi-Fi at a glance
| Factor | 2.4 GHz | 5 GHz | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Generally reaches farther. | Generally has shorter range. | Try 2.4 GHz for a distant room or when the 5 GHz signal is weak. Walls and floors can reduce coverage on either band. NETGEAR Support and Google Fiber Help describe these general differences. |
| Potential speed | Generally slower. | Generally faster. | For a compatible device near the router, try 5 GHz when throughput matters. This is a tendency, not a promised speed. NETGEAR Support |
| Congestion and interference | Often busier because many devices and household technologies use it. | Often less congested, though local conditions vary. | If performance is poor, consider interference and nearby networks as well as the band. NETGEAR Support |
| Compatibility | Supported by many older and low-bandwidth devices; some IoT devices and printers are 2.4 GHz-only. | Not supported by every device. | Check the device maker’s specifications if a device cannot see or join the network. Google Fiber Help and Google Nest Help |
| Band selection | A dual-band router may select it automatically. | A router may prefer it automatically when the signal is suitable. | A single network name can cover both bands; router steering and client behavior vary by model. Google Fiber Help and Google Nest Help |
These are qualitative comparisons, not universal household speed or distance figures. Actual performance depends on the router and client capabilities, signal path, interference, and internet service. FCC broadband guidance explains that Wi-Fi is only one part of the connection.

How to choose a band for a device
Check compatibility first
A device cannot use a band it does not support. Some smart-home products and printers work only on 2.4 GHz, so check the exact model’s specifications or setup instructions rather than assuming it supports both. Google Nest Help

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use 2.4 GHz when reach matters
If the device is far from the router or separated by walls or floors, 2.4 GHz is often the better starting point because it generally provides greater coverage. The actual signal still depends on the building and local conditions. NETGEAR Support and Google Fiber Help

Try 5 GHz for nearby, high-throughput devices
A compatible phone, laptop, or streaming device near the router can often make better use of 5 GHz’s higher potential speeds. If it performs worse farther away, the shorter range may be the reason; switching bands is a useful comparison, not a guarantee of improvement. NETGEAR Support
Do you need to select the band yourself?
Not always. Some routers show separate network names for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz; others use one name and steer compatible devices between bands. Google says supported Google and Nest Wifi systems automatically direct devices to a band under one network name. Other routers may provide separate networks, and their settings vary by model. - Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
When the router manages band selection, the device and router make the choice according to their own capabilities and rules. A single Wi-Fi name does not mean only one band is active. For exact controls or setup steps, use the documentation for your router model.
What to check if Wi-Fi is slow or a device will not connect
- Confirm band support. If a device cannot find or join 5 GHz, check its specifications before changing router settings. Google Nest Help
- Compare from nearby. Move the device closer to the router as a diagnostic. If it connects or performs better there, distance or obstacles may be affecting the signal.
- Consider interference and placement. Nearby networks, household technologies, walls, and floors can affect Wi-Fi. The FCC recommends placing the router centrally to improve coverage. FCC broadband guidance
- Separate Wi-Fi from internet speed. A band cannot overcome limitations in the router, device, or current internet service. Check those factors before concluding that the frequency is the only cause. FCC broadband guidance
- Consider other connection options if needed. The FCC notes that an extender or mesh system can help distribute a signal, while wired Ethernet can provide higher speed and reduce Wi-Fi congestion when a direct cable connection is practical. These are possible remedies, not prerequisites. FCC broadband guidance
Why the band alone cannot predict your speed
Frequency is one factor in a Wi-Fi connection, not a speed rating for the whole home. A nearby 5 GHz connection may offer higher throughput potential, while a 2.4 GHz connection may be more usable at greater distance. Obstacles, interference, device and router capabilities, and the internet connection can change what you experience. The cited guidance offers qualitative comparisons, not a broadly applicable speed or range figure for a typical household. NETGEAR Support and FCC broadband guidance
