1Password vs Apple Passwords: Choose by Your Devices and Needs

Apple Passwords suits Apple-focused users who want integrated credentials and sharing. 1Password adds broader platform support, family controls and storage for more than logins—for a recurring fee.

1Password is the better fit if you use Windows, Android, Linux or several browsers, want household controls and recovery, or keep sensitive records beyond logins. Apple Passwords is a capable choice if you mainly use Apple devices and want passwords, passkeys, verification codes and shared groups integrated with them. Neither set of vendor feature pages establishes a universal security winner. The practical choice is about device coverage, what you store, how you share it, and whether 1Password’s recurring fee is worth its additional reach and tools.

Is 1Password better than Apple Passwords?

It depends on your devices and how you manage credentials. 1Password has documented apps and browser support across more platforms, as well as family administration and secure storage for information beyond passwords. Apple Passwords brings password and passkey autofill, verification codes, compromised-password alerts and sharing into Apple’s ecosystem.

Both support passkeys. Apple’s developer documentation also describes importing and exporting passkeys between password managers, so choosing one does not necessarily lock passkeys into that provider. That portability statement is not a guarantee that every password, note, card or other item will transfer cleanly.

How do device and browser coverage compare?

1Password spans more operating systems

1Password lists support for macOS, iOS, Windows, Android and Linux, and for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave and Safari. That breadth is useful if you move between a work PC and a personal phone, use Linux, or rely on more than one browser. See 1Password’s product overview for its documented platform coverage.

Apple Passwords is most seamless on Apple devices

Apple documents iCloud Keychain syncing across approved Apple devices and Password AutoFill on supported devices. Apple also says an iPhone can be used to sign in to apps and websites on non-Apple devices. That cross-device sign-in option is not the same as having native Passwords apps and browser extensions across Windows, Android and Linux. Apple’s support guide to using Passwords covers its setup and features.

What can each service store and do?

Capability Apple Passwords 1Password
Passwords and autofill Password AutoFill and iCloud Keychain on supported Apple devices. Browser autofill; support is listed for major browsers and operating systems.
Passkeys Supported; Apple documents passkeys based on FIDO Alliance and W3C standards. Supported.
Verification codes Automatic verification-code support is documented. Not stated in the cited product and pricing sources.
Weak or compromised credential alerts Apple documents warnings for weak or compromised passwords. Watchtower alerts are documented; the cited sources do not establish that its alert criteria are identical to Apple’s.
Sharing Shared groups can include passwords, passkeys and Sign in with Apple credentials. Password sharing and family vaults are documented.
Non-login sensitive information Not stated in the cited Apple Passwords sources. 1Password lists credit cards, addresses, SSH keys, API tokens and other information.
Additional controls Apple documents iCloud Keychain and shared-group privacy details. 1Password documents a Secret Key and Travel Mode.

These are documented capabilities, not a comparative security test. Apple describes compromised-password checking as cryptographic and says it can alert users without sharing their actual passwords with Apple. More detail is in Apple’s Passwords privacy documentation. 1Password describes its own model as using an account password and Secret Key, with end-to-end encryption; see its authentication and encryption explanation.

Which is better for families and shared accounts?

Apple shared groups let invited members access selected entries, and Apple says group members can modify or delete shared items. That can work well when trusted contacts already use Apple devices and the goal is to share a defined set of credentials. Consider who should be able to change or remove each item before adding it to a group.

Is 1Password worth paying for if you use an iPhone?

For a user who only needs credentials on Apple devices, Apple Passwords may cover the essentials without a separate password-manager subscription. Apple’s materials describe Passwords as part of its Apple-device and iCloud Keychain experience; the sources cited here do not give a comparable standalone subscription price. That does not establish that every Apple device or storage cost is free.

1Password’s official US pricing page, accessed in 2026, lists regular annual-billing rates of $3.99 per month for Individual and $5.99 per month for Families (five users). It also displays first-year annual-billing promotional rates of $2.99 per month for Individual and $4.49 per month for Families for eligible new direct customers. Those promotions do not apply to subscriptions through third-party app stores. The page lists a 14-day trial. Check the checkout total, region, billing terms and eligibility before subscribing, since prices and offers can change. A TechRadar report described US plan increases effective March 27, 2026; the official pricing page is the appropriate place to confirm current terms.

Can you move passkeys between Apple Passwords and 1Password?

Apple’s developer documentation says passkeys can be securely imported and exported between password managers. This supports passkey portability between ecosystems, but it does not promise that every credential type or associated detail will migrate. Before switching, check current instructions for the specific source device, destination device and data you want to move. Apple explains passkey behavior and portability at Apple Developer.

  • Choose 1Password if you need practical coverage across Apple and non-Apple devices or browsers, family administration and recovery, or one place for logins and other sensitive records.
