Usually, yes: you can use a 2 A charger instead of a 1 A charger if the charger’s voltage, connector and charging method are compatible with your device. The amp rating is the maximum current the supply can provide, not a command forcing that current into the device. A device draws what it can use, subject to its own charging limits and the charger’s capabilities.
What the amp rating means
A charger marked 2 A can supply up to 2 amps under its rated conditions. It does not automatically send 2 A into every device. USB Power Delivery, for example, lets compatible devices draw the power they require; Plugable describes the same principle for USB charging. That does not mean every charger and device can negotiate every charging mode, so compatibility still matters.

USB-IF describes USB Power Delivery as supporting power management in which each device takes only what it needs. Its overview says USB PD Revision 3.1 can support up to 240 W in supported USB-C/PD configurations. That is a protocol capability, not a typical phone-charging rate or a promise that a given charger, cable or device supports it. USB-IF: USB Power Delivery
What happens if you use a 1 A charger where 2 A is needed?
A lower-capacity supply may charge more slowly, or it may not keep the device powered while the device is working. The result depends on the device’s charging circuitry, power use and charging method. Lenovo’s guidance for a particular ThinkBook model illustrates that an underpowered adapter may not adequately power or charge that computer; it is an example for that model, not a rule for every device. There is no universal speed ratio: a 2 A supply does not necessarily charge a device twice as fast as a 1 A supply. The device may draw less than either charger’s maximum, and the device, cable, charging protocol and current battery conditions can all constrain charging. The reviewed sources do not establish a general percentage difference.
Check these four things before swapping chargers
- Match the required voltage. Read the device label or manual and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. A higher amp rating cannot make the wrong voltage safe. - Meet the device’s current or power requirement. Prefer a supply that meets or exceeds the stated requirement, subject to the manufacturer’s guidance. ASUS advises choosing a certified replacement with output power higher than the recommended power when another charger is needed. - Verify the connector and charging method. Confirm that the plug fits correctly and that the charger supports the method the device expects, such as USB charging or USB-C Power Delivery. A connector that fits does not by itself establish electrical or protocol compatibility.
- Check the exact model’s instructions. Look at the device label, manual or manufacturer support page. The right answer can differ between models, and “1 A” or “2 A” alone does not provide enough information to decide whether a charger is compatible.
Do not confuse wall-charger ratings with USB computer ports
USB-IF compliance guidance gives maximum current figures of 500 mA for a standard USB 2.0 downstream port and 900 mA for a standard USB 3.0 downstream port. These figures concern standard host computer ports; they are not the ratings of wall chargers and should not be used to judge a 1 A or 2 A wall adapter. The page does not state a publication year. Practical decision
- Considering a 2 A charger for a device supplied with a 1 A charger? It is generally suitable if voltage, connector, charging method and manufacturer guidance all match. The higher current capacity alone does not force excess current into the device.
- Considering a 1 A charger for a device supplied with a 2 A charger? It may work, but it may charge more slowly or fail to power the device adequately during use. Use a charger that meets the device’s stated requirements where possible.
- Unsure about the specifications? Don’t rely on the amp figure alone. Check the exact device model’s manual or ask its manufacturer before using the replacement.
