Surveillance cameras may estimate much longer—12 to 48 hours in TP-Link’s 15fps examples—because their recording settings and bitrates differ. The actual time depends on the camera’s bitrate, recording mode, usable card space and clip limits, so there is no single duration that applies to every device.
What recording time can you expect from 16GB?
These manufacturer estimates illustrate how widely recording time can vary. They apply to the named cameras and settings, not to every camera with the same resolution or card capacity.

Sony’s recording-time table, Garmin’s Dash Cam Mini table and TP-Link’s camera estimates are product-specific. The TP-Link figures are estimates for its supported camera context and 15fps settings; they are not generic retention guarantees. SanDisk also provides a capacity-versus-recording-time table, but its 16GB values depend on the quality column, so consult the table rather than treating one figure as universal: SanDisk video storage guidance.
Why the same 16GB card records for different lengths of time
Bitrate and image quality
Bitrate is the amount of video data written each second. Higher bitrate consumes storage more quickly: Sony’s HX400/HX400V estimates rise from 1 hour 30 minutes at 24 Mbps to 2 hours 45 minutes at 12 Mbps. A quality preset can affect bitrate, so the resolution label alone is not enough to predict duration.

Resolution, frame rate and compression
Resolution and frame rate influence the amount of data, but their effect depends on the camera’s encoding choices. TP-Link’s estimates use 15fps surveillance modes; they should not be compared directly with a dashcam recording at 30fps or with a camera using a different bitrate or compression method. A 4K label by itself does not tell you how much footage will fit.
Motion and scene complexity
Some cameras use variable bitrate (VBR), adjusting the data rate to the scene. Sony explains in its DSC-HX400/HX400V Help Guide that recording time varies because VBR adjusts image quality depending on the shooting scene. Sony also notes that fast-moving subjects need more memory. TP-Link similarly cautions that motion and scene complexity affect actual recording duration.

- Perfect for Android smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, game consoles, dash cameras, drones and surveillance systems, etc; It can use to store or back up high-res photos, videos, documents, music and more.
Usable space and recording limits
A card labeled 16GB does not necessarily provide 16GB of free space for new video. Formatting, reserved space and existing files reduce what is available. In addition, a camera can stop an individual clip because of a mode-specific or file-size limit even when the card still has room. Sony documents a 29-minute continuous shooting limit in some modes and an approximately 15-minute limit for a particular MP4 mode tied to a 2GB file-size limit.

- Flexible Use. Expand the storage capacity of your device with this 2 pack Micro SD card. Each of these micro SD memory cards comes with a large 16GB capacity to help organize your different types of files, keeping your data organized and easy to manage.
- Wide Compatibility. This microSDHC memory card works with various devices such as game consoles, surveillance systems, dashcams, computers, smartphones, tablets, drones, and more.
- Excellent Performance. This C10 micro SD card utilizes UHS-I standard to boost up to 75MB/S read speed and 10MB/S write speed, providing smooth Full HD/HD video recording and rapid transfer of high-resolution photos, movies, music, apps, and games.
- Reliable and Secure. This U1 16GB micro SD card features reinforced resistance to water, shock, X-ray, and temperature extremes, allowing you to capture photos and videos with ease on the go.
- With SD Adapters. Included with one bonus SD adapters, this TF card bulk enhances the versatility to support cameras, and other devices with SD card slots, making it easy to transfer files across devices.
Recording minutes ≈ 2,133 ÷ bitrate in Mbps
The estimate comes from 16 billion bytes multiplied by eight bits per byte, divided by bitrate, then converted from seconds to minutes. At 24 Mbps, it gives about 89 minutes, close to Sony’s 90-minute estimate for its particular camera. It assumes decimal capacity and excludes formatting, filesystem overhead, other files, variable bitrate and device limits, so use it for rough planning rather than as a promise.
Check card compatibility and speed before recording
Capacity tells you how much data a card can store; speed class concerns minimum sequential write performance. A card that is too slow or unsupported may not be suitable even if it has enough capacity. Check the camera manual for the supported card type, maximum capacity and recommended speed class. The SD Association classifies SDHC as capacities above 2GB through 32GB and describes video speed classes as minimum sequential performance categories: SD Association speed-class guidance.

- Fast Transfer Speed: The TF memory card adopts Speed Class UHS-I provides with 75MB/s of read speed and 10MB/s of write speed(Note:TF cards transfer speed may vary depending on capacity, test platform hardware, test software, and operating system)
- Wide Compatibility: 16GB SD card works with Android phones, tablets, cameras, gaming consoles, dashcams.(Note: May not suit high-speed write scenarios.)
- Note on Usable Capacity: The available space on a 16GB card typically appears as approx 14.4GB on your device. This is a standard industry practice.(If the actual capacity differs significantly from the actual capacity, the capacity may be hidden.)
- By default the 16GB micro SD card is formatted as FAT32: Some devices may require reformatting the card or may not be compatible with microSD cards. Check manual before ordering
- Note: This is a microSD card, NOT a standard SD card. Package includes five microSD cards + one shared adapter. Insert card into the adapter to fit standard SD slots
For example, Kingston has published a datasheet for a 16GB microSDHC UHS-I U3 action-camera card; that specification is not evidence that every camera accepts UHS-I U3 or that the product is currently available. Verify the card’s current fit and availability against the device manual and the live listing: Kingston datasheet.

For security cameras, distinguish recording time from retention
Security-camera estimates often describe how long a given capacity may retain footage under specified settings, not how long one uninterrupted clip will run. In TP-Link’s 16GB examples, its supported camera context estimates 12 hours at 8MP/15fps, 24 hours at 4MP/15fps and 48 hours at 1080p/15fps. Actual retention changes with bitrate, motion and scene complexity.

If the camera uses loop recording, check how it behaves when the card fills. TP-Link says its loop recording overwrites the oldest footage when full, so the card functions as a rolling retention window rather than a permanent archive. Repeated recording and overwriting also make card suitability for sustained video use worth checking; TP-Link notes limited write cycles and recommends an endurance card for monitoring in its compatible-card material, but that recommendation names a 64GB card rather than verifying a 16GB model: TP-Link camera support.
Find the estimate for your camera
- Check the recording mode. Note the resolution, frame rate and quality or bitrate setting in the camera menu or manual.
- Look for the manufacturer’s capacity table or remaining-time display. Prefer an estimate for your exact camera and mode over a generic calculator.
- Confirm card compatibility. Check the manual’s supported card type, maximum capacity and write-speed requirement.
- Format the card in the camera and check available time. Formatting removes existing files, so save anything you need first.
- For loop recording, check overwrite behavior. Decide whether the camera’s rolling retention window meets your needs.
For a quick comparison between recording options, use bitrate or quality setting, resolution, frame rate, compression mode where documented, supported card speed and whether you need one continuous clip or rolling retention. The camera maker’s estimate or remaining-time display is the most useful figure for that particular setup.
