Google Messages has useful tools tucked into conversations, filters and RCS chats. Here are 16 practical features, with the steps to find them and the limits that matter. Menus can differ by app version, Android device, region and conversation type; check your current app if a control is missing.
Save time while messaging
1. Schedule a message
In a conversation, type your message, then press and hold Send. Choose a suggested time or tap to pick a date and time. On Android 7.0 and later, Google says a scheduled message will send after the phone reconnects if Wi-Fi or mobile data is unavailable at the chosen time. 2. Change or send a scheduled message now

4. Reply to a particular message
Swipe from left to right on the message you want to answer, then write your reply. This feature requires chat features; Google’s documented desktop instructions allow users to view replies but not send them. Google Messages Help: More features in Google Messages
5. Copy a verification code directly
When a text contains a one-time verification code, open it and tap Copy Code, then paste the code into the app or website requesting it. Google says the code is not sent to its servers as part of this feature; that statement applies to copying verification codes, not to every kind of message. Find messages and keep the inbox manageable
6. Search message content

7. Show unread conversations
Open the inbox filter options and select Unread to narrow the list to conversations with unread messages. Google Messages Help: Use filters in Google Messages
8. Separate known from unknown senders
Use the sender filters to distinguish contacts you have saved from numbers not saved in Contacts. Google’s definition of a known sender is based on whether the sender is in your contacts. Google Messages Help: Use filters in Google Messages
9. Collect starred conversations

10. Filter by SIM on a dual-SIM phone
If your phone uses two SIMs, select the SIM 1 or SIM 2 filter to see messages sent to the selected SIM. Google Messages Help: Use filters in Google Messages

What RCS adds—and where it differs
RCS is a messaging standard that can add richer features when the people in a conversation and their providers support it. Availability varies by region and carrier, and messages may fall back to SMS/MMS depending on settings. Data use may count against your mobile plan. 12. See typing indicators and read receipts
In compatible RCS chats, typing indicators show when the other person is composing a message, and read receipts can show when a message has been read. Read receipts are affected by settings and whether the conversation is using RCS. Google Messages Help: RCS chats by Google FAQ
13. Send higher-resolution photos and videos

15. React with an emoji
Press and hold a message, then choose an emoji reaction. Reaction behavior for SMS/MMS varies by region; Google says SMS/MMS reactions apply to text, not media received through MMS. Google Messages Help: Use expressive features in Google Messages

16. Pair Messages with a computer or Android tablet
On a computer, open Google Messages for web and pair it with your phone using the same Google Account. Google also documents using Messages on Android tablets. On a shared or public computer, unpair when finished: recent threads, contacts and settings are encrypted and cached in the browser. Two useful distinctions before you turn on more features
Encryption depends on the conversation
Google documents end-to-end encryption for RCS conversations with other Google Messages users. Its FAQ says RCS chats with iPhone users are not end-to-end encrypted. Check the conversation’s indicators rather than assuming all RCS chats have identical protections. Google Messages Help: RCS chats by Google FAQ
Business chats are not personal group chats
Some businesses can use RCS to provide verified identity cues, rich media and action buttons such as order tracking. Availability varies, and a business needs consent to message you. AI and visual extras vary
Google’s product page describes features including Gemini, Magic Compose, Photomoji, custom chat bubbles and reaction effects. Access and requirements are not established as universal for each feature, so look for them in your current app rather than expecting every phone or account to have the same options.
