There is no reliable universal list of 15 software-engineering keywords that every applicant should add. The useful list is the vocabulary in the specific job posting: include a term only when it accurately describes your skills or experience, then show how you used it. Treat the 15 prompts below as a job-by-job checklist, not a recipe for beating every applicant tracking system (ATS).
How to find the right ATS keywords for a software engineer resume
Start with the target job description, not a generic keyword list. UT Austin Career Services recommends identifying relevant terms in the posting, paying attention to repeated language, and incorporating terms that match your experience. Concordia University’s career guidance likewise emphasizes technical skills, tools, software, certifications, and relevant industry language. Use the employer’s recognizable wording when it fits. If a posting names a particular language, framework, or credential, use that name rather than hoping a scanner will equate it with a synonym. Add an abbreviation alongside its full form only when both are accurate and useful to a human reader. There is no evidence here that every ATS parses synonyms, counts repetitions, or scores resumes in the same way.

15 keyword categories to check in the posting
These are prompts for comparing your background with a specific role. Examples are illustrative, not a ranked set of the most common or most frequently forgotten terms. Add only the ones you can support with your work, projects, education, or credentials.
#1 Best Overall
- Role title: Check the exact title and close title wording the employer uses, if it accurately reflects the role you have held or are seeking.
- Programming languages: Look for named languages. Python and Java are examples, not universal requirements.
- Frameworks, libraries, and runtimes: Match the specific technologies requested; React is one example.
- Databases and data technologies: Include the relevant systems or data tools named by the employer and that you have used.
- Cloud platforms and services: AWS is an example of a platform name; list specific services only when your experience supports them.
- Build, deployment, and DevOps tools: Check which tools and practices the posting actually names; Docker is an illustrative tool example.
- Testing, quality, and automation: Identify requested testing methods, quality practices, or automation tools and connect them to your work.
- APIs and integrations: Look for the API or integration technologies the role involves.
- Architecture and distributed systems: Include architecture or distributed-systems terminology when the job asks for it and you have relevant experience.
- Version control and collaboration: Check for specific tools or workflows used to manage code and work with a team.
- Security, reliability, and performance: Identify the requirements that matter for the product or system, and use terms you can substantiate.
- Methods and processes: Include named approaches such as Agile or Scrum only if they describe how you have worked.
- Certifications and credentials: Match required credentials by their accurate names; do not imply you hold one you have not earned.
- Product or industry terminology: Notice domain-specific language that reflects the employer’s work and your relevant background.
- Soft skills demonstrated through action: If the posting asks for communication, ownership, or collaboration, show an example in an accomplishment rather than relying on an unsupported list of traits.
Turn relevant terms into evidence
A skills section makes relevant technologies easy to find, but a list alone does not explain your level or how you applied them. Use experience or project bullets to connect a tool or skill to work performed and, where you can, a result. Concordia recommends placing relevant terms in sections such as skills, experience, and summary, and grounding soft skills in concrete actions or outcomes. Indeed’s guidance is to include a keyword only when it genuinely matches your education, experience, or skills. Indeed: Get Your Resume Seen With ATS Keywords · Indeed: ATS-Friendly Resume
For example, if a posting requests a language you have used on a project, put its name in the skills section and describe the project work in a relevant bullet. Do not insert a technology into an unrelated bullet just to repeat the term. A keyword should make the resume more informative to a recruiter, not less credible.

A repeatable tailoring workflow
- Save the job description. Highlight repeated requirements, named technologies, credentials, and responsibilities.
- Sort by relevance and importance. Mark which terms you can substantiate through employment, projects, education, or certifications; leave unsupported terms out.
- Choose accurate wording. Use the employer’s term when it accurately describes your background. Pair a full name with an abbreviation only when both are correct and helpful.
- Place terms where they belong. Put core qualifications in a clear skills section and show relevant tools in accomplishment bullets. Keep each bullet about work you actually did.
- Use a readable document and follow upload instructions. UT Austin advises a chronological format and cautions that tables, columns, graphics, and objects can impair ATS reading. The required file format can differ by employer, so follow the live posting or application form. UT Austin Career Services: Applicant Tracking Systems
- Make a job-specific copy and verify it. Keep a master resume, tailor a copy for the role, and check every keyword and claim before submitting.
What ATS keyword matching can and cannot tell you
Tailoring helps make relevant qualifications easier to identify; it cannot guarantee an interview. The available career-services guidance supports matching a resume to a posting, but does not establish a universal ATS scoring model, a fixed set of software-engineering keywords, or an automatic rejection rule for missing a particular term.
