Ghost touch means the iPhone registers taps, swipes or typing that you did not make. It is a symptom, not an Apple diagnosis. Moisture, dirt, a case or protector, charging accessories, one faulty app, iOS software, or a failing display digitizer can all produce it. iOS 26 may be involved when the problem starts after an update, but timing alone does not prove that the operating system is the cause.
Use the fixes below in order. Stop immediately if the phone is wet, unusually hot, smoking, smells burnt, has a swollen battery or a lifting/cracked display. Disconnect power and arrange service instead of continuing to troubleshoot physical damage.

13 fixes, in the safest order
1. Dry your hands and the display
Turn the iPhone away from your face and wipe your fingers and the glass with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth. Water, sweat and condensation can create inputs the digitizer interprets as touches. Do not charge a wet phone. Do not use rice, a heat gun, hair dryer, compressed air or objects pushed into a port.
Test: use the bare, dry screen for several minutes. If phantom input stops, moisture or contamination was the immediate trigger. If liquid reached the phone or symptoms remain after it dries, seek service.

2. Clean the screen safely
With the iPhone unplugged, wipe the display gently with a soft, lint-free cloth. Remove grease, grit and cleaning residue without spraying liquid directly onto the phone. A dirty surface can cause intermittent taps and swipes.
3. Remove the case
Take off the case and check whether its lip presses an edge, a button is stuck, or debris is trapped between the case and glass. Use the phone without it long enough to reproduce the problem. This test costs no data and does not establish that the case is defective unless the behavior changes.
4. Remove the screen protector
Temporarily remove a protector that is cracked, misaligned, lifting, wet, dirty or trapping grit. Edge pressure can interfere with touch recognition. Replace it only after confirming the unprotected display behaves normally; do not assume every protector causes ghost touch.
5. Disconnect every accessory
Unplug Lightning or USB-C cables, hubs, adapters, battery packs, car accessories and other wired devices. Apple lists disconnecting accessories, cleaning and drying the display, and removing cases or protectors among its first steps for an intermittent or overly sensitive screen (Apple’s touch-screen guidance).

If touch becomes normal, reconnect items one at a time to identify the variable. A result that changes when an accessory is connected does not by itself prove that the charger is unsafe.
6. Test another cable, charger and outlet
Leave the phone unplugged first. Then test a known-good cable and charger from a different wall outlet, without a hub or extension. Apple specifically recommends trying another socket, cable or charger when touch works after an accessory is disconnected. Persistent problems away from power point to another cause.
7. Restart the iPhone normally
A restart can clear a temporary touch-driver or process failure and does not erase personal data.
- On Face ID models, hold the side button and either volume button until the power-off slider appears.
- Drag the slider and wait about 30 seconds for the phone to turn off.
- Hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
- On a Home-button model, hold the side or top button, use the slider, then hold that button to start it again.
If phantom touches make the slider unusable, use the force-restart procedure below.

8. Force-restart when touch cannot be controlled
A force restart does not repair a failed digitizer, but it can clear a frozen software state and does not erase data.
- iPhone 8 or later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation and later): press and quickly release Volume Up, press and quickly release Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. See Apple’s current button sequence.
- iPhone 7 or 7 Plus: hold the Side button and Volume Down together until the Apple logo appears.
- iPhone 6s or earlier, including iPhone SE (1st generation): hold Home and the Side or Top button together until the logo appears. Apple’s older-model instructions are at this support page.
9. Check whether one app is responsible
Use the Home Screen, Settings and several unrelated apps. Note whether touches go wrong only inside one app. If so, update it in the App Store, close and reopen it, and reinstall it only after confirming that its account data is synced or backed up. An app-specific fault is not evidence that the whole iPhone has a defective screen. If the same behavior appears in Settings or on the Lock Screen, continue with device-level steps.
10. Update iOS 26 and your apps
When touch remains usable, back up first, then open Settings > General > Software Update and install the offered iOS update. Update affected apps in the App Store as well. Do not claim that a particular iOS 26.x release fixes ghost touch unless Apple’s release notes explicitly say so: reports that a problem began after an update are not proof that iOS 26 universally causes it.
11. Reset All Settings
Use this middle-ground step after the physical checks, restart and updates:

- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Reset, then Reset All Settings.
Apple says this does not delete photos, messages, apps or documents (Apple’s reset explanation). It does reset preferences and configuration such as Apple Pay cards, Bluetooth pairings, display and accessibility settings, Face ID settings and some Home Screen choices. You will need to set those up again. It is not a guaranteed repair for a damaged digitizer.
12. Back up, then reinstall iOS with a computer-based Update
Use this route when the issue followed an interrupted update, the phone is stuck or repeatedly restarting, Settings cannot be used reliably, or normal troubleshooting failed. Make an iCloud backup while touch works, or create an encrypted computer backup; encryption preserves more sensitive categories such as Health and Activity data (Apple’s backup guidance).
For recovery mode on an iPhone 8 or later:
- Connect the iPhone to a Mac or Windows PC.
- Open Finder on a modern Mac or Apple Devices on Windows.
- Press and release Volume Up, then Volume Down.
- Hold the Side button until the Connect to Computer screen appears.
- Choose Update first when offered.
Apple distinguishes Update, which attempts to reinstall iOS while preserving personal data, from Restore, which reinstalls iOS and erases the device (recovery instructions; recovery-mode details). If the download takes more than 15 minutes and the phone leaves recovery mode, let the download finish and repeat the button sequence. Do not choose Restore or Erase All Content and Settings until you have a verified backup.
13. Get the iPhone and display inspected
Arrange professional service when ghost touch remains after cleaning, accessory tests, restarting, updating and settings reset; appears across iOS including the Lock Screen or Settings; affects one region of the screen; or began after impact, liquid, a bent frame or screen replacement. A display assembly, digitizer, connector, adhesive pressure or other board fault may be involved. A clean software reinstall that changes nothing makes hardware service more likely, though it is not an absolute diagnostic test.

When ghost touch is a safety issue
- Disconnect power and stop charging after liquid exposure, especially if there is condensation.
- Do not press a lifting display back into place. A screen being pushed outward can indicate battery swelling.
- Stop using a phone that is excessively hot, smoking, making unusual noises or giving off a burning smell.
- If phantom taps enter incorrect passcodes, stop trying random actions. Repeated failures can cause escalating lockout delays; force-restart and seek help before the device becomes disabled.
What a repair history tells you
Ask whether symptoms began after a third-party or authorized screen replacement, a drop, a bent frame or liquid exposure. Do not assume every third-party screen is bad, but part quality, calibration, connector seating, adhesive pressure and compatibility can matter. Return to the repair provider or use Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider when the timing points to a repair. Apple notes that independent providers may have access to genuine parts and resources, but their work is not Apple-authorized and is not covered by Apple’s limited warranty or AppleCare as an authorized repair (repair-provider information).
Repair and cost expectations
Apple’s repair estimator gives a model- and location-specific estimate; the final amount can depend on inspection, parts availability and other damage. In the United States, Apple lists AppleCare+ service fees of $29 for screen-only accidental damage and $99 for other accidental damage before applicable tax (fee table). The $29 fee requires that no additional damage prevents a screen-only repair, and coverage, eligibility, country and plan terms apply.
For an independent shop, ask for the exact display part type, written warranty, diagnostic charge, exclusions, data-handling policy and whether post-repair touch, Face ID, True Tone and water-resistance behavior are covered. DIY kits from vendors such as iFixit are best reserved for experienced repairers with a backed-up device; opening the phone can cause further damage, affect water resistance and create sensor or calibration problems.
How to decide whether software or hardware is more likely
- Software or app is more plausible: the issue is limited to one app, began after an interrupted update, or disappears after a restart or iOS Update.
- Hardware or repair is more plausible: it happens in multiple apps and on the Lock Screen, affects a fixed screen area, follows impact or liquid, or survives a clean reinstall.
- Accessory interference is more plausible: it appears only while charging and stops with a different cable, charger or outlet.
Do not keep repeating force-restarts or factory resets when the same system-wide symptoms return. Persistent phantom input is the point to preserve your data and have the display and phone inspected.
