Spoiler warning: this guide describes story moments and visual details from the opening stretch of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival. The list of 13 references comes from GamesRadar+ writer Emma-Jane Betts, whose piece reflects her own exploration of the game and may not be exhaustive. Most entries point to the first two Hellraiser films, to Hellraiser comics lore, or to horror and rock culture. A few are plausible rather than provable, and the guide itself says so.
What the game is and how it connects to the films
Hellraiser: Revival is a single-player, first-person action survival horror game. Tim Willits, Chief Creative Officer at Saber Interactive, used that description in a PlayStation Blog announcement dated July 22, 2025 (PlayStation Blog announcement). Saber’s official announcement says the game is a new story in the Hellraiser universe and that Doug Bradley returns as Pinhead (Saber Interactive announcement).

The story follows Aidan Lynch. Emil Esov, Game Director at Saber Interactive, wrote in a PlayStation Blog post dated July 16, 2026 that the experience is seen from Aidan’s perspective. His girlfriend, Sunny, activates the Genesis Configuration, a puzzle box that works as both the story’s catalyst and a gameplay element. Assistant Game Director Vid Rajin told PlayStation Blog readers in a preview dated August 19, 2026 that the team uses the Genesis Configuration “at the centre of things” and wanted “a narrative purpose for puzzles wherever we can.” That preview describes environmental and box-based puzzles, inventory management, and a campaign of 8 to 12 hours depending on skill and difficulty (PlayStation Blog puzzle preview). The same preview lists October 8, 2026 as the PS5 launch date. Check your own storefront for availability on other platforms.
Xbox Wire’s Q&A on Clive Barker’s involvement says the game draws inspiration from the first two films but is not directly connected to their plots (Xbox Wire Q&A). That distinction matters for everything below. The films are a source of tone, imagery and lore, not a map of the game’s continuity.
#1 Best Overall
- A New Story in Hellraiser's Canon – Unwittingly kickstart Pinhead’s ritual to unleash greater pain and pleasure than ever before.
- Harness the Power of the Box – Combine the unique, hellish abilities of the Configuration with an arsenal of earthly weapons to inflict bone-breaking, flesh-searing pain - or is it pleasure? - upon masochistic enemies.
- Fight Against Unholy Enemies – Take on hell's wretches, deviants, cultists, and even its most infernal priests in a story-driven horror survival game.
How to read the guide’s claims
Each entry below reports something visible in the game and then gives the guide’s interpretation of its source. The guide is not a developer-confirmed checklist. Saber’s material confirms general inspiration from the films, not the intent behind each object, painting or achievement name. Where the guide hedges, this article keeps the hedge.
References to the first two films
The chained mattress at the first entry into Hell
When the player first enters Hell, a mattress is thrown in front of them and then pulled away by chains. The guide links the image to the first two films and to Julia’s resurrection in Hellraiser II, but it also says the exact identity of the mattress is unknown. Treat the link as a resemblance the author noticed, not a confirmed callback.
Wires cutting into a dead detective’s face
Near the first gun, a dead detective wears a head contraption with wires cutting into his face. The guide compares this to Dr. Philip Channard’s transformation in Hellraiser II. The visual parallel is clear, but the game does not state a connection to Channard.

Blade-tipped tentacles in the hallways
Some hallways are lined with tentacles that end in surgical blades. The guide compares them to the Doctor and Channard imagery in Hellraiser II, which is one of the more concrete visual matches in the list.
Rank #2
“Jesus Wept” and the chained figure
Depending on a choice the player makes, a scene resembles Frank Cotton being pulled by chains in the first film. The guide notes that Aidan does not say the line and that the image is not an exact replica of the film’s scene. Because the scene depends on a choice, not every player will see it.
Comics lore: the Eremite and Orno
The shopkeeper as an Eremite
A document beside the shopkeeper reportedly identifies her as an Eremite. The guide ties this creature type to the skeletal winged figure in the first film and to Hellraiser comics lore. The document is the game’s own text, so the identification is the game’s label, while the comparison to the film figure is the guide’s.
Orno in the same note
The same note reportedly mentions Orno. The guide describes Orno as a comics Cenobite associated with creating new puzzle boxes. This is the guide’s lore identification, and readers who do not follow the comics may want to check it against the comics themselves before treating it as settled.

Ozzy Osbourne
A grave inscription, a pair of glasses, bat statues and purple candles are read as a tribute to Ozzy Osbourne. The guide also connects him to the song “Hellraiser.” The tribute reading rests on the combination of objects, so it is stronger as a set than any single prop.
Rank #3
Lemmy Kilmister’s cowboy hat
A cowboy hat beside the same grave is identified as a tribute to Lemmy Kilmister. The guide links Lemmy and Motörhead to the song “Hellraiser” and to Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth. Because the hat sits beside the Ozzy grave, the two entries are best read together.
Franchise, genre and literary nods
A magazine bearing the name “Damballa”
A magazine with the name “Damballa” is read as a possible nod to Child’s Play and to broader 1980s horror. The guide itself notes that books and magazines are often stock assets, so the reference may be incidental. Read it as a possibility, not a confirmed Easter egg.
A cultist note titled “Hell on Earth”
A cultist note carries a title that matches the subtitle of the third Hellraiser film, Hell on Earth. This is a direct textual match, though the guide does not claim it reflects developer intent.

A painting in Marlowe’s mansion is described as an interpretation of William Blake’s Red Dragon. The guide draws a thematic comparison to the villain of Thomas Harris’s Red Dragon. The writer says it is not an exact replica of Blake’s work, so the match is one of theme and composition rather than copying.
Rank #4
Less certain: the yellow balloon
The guide suggests a possible reference to the yellow balloon in the 1990s IT miniseries, but the author explicitly calls it a stretch and notes that the game has no other IT signifiers. Of the 13 entries, this is the weakest, and it is listed here so that readers can weigh it themselves.
Achievement names that quote other works
The guide says many Steam achievement names reference other works. Examples it gives are:
- “Only Nightmares Last Forever”
- “A waste of good suffering”
- “What Are You Selling?”
- “What are you buying?”
- “What’s in the Box”
- “No life in the void, only death”
- “Burn, oh such a limited imagination”
- “Unlimited Power”
The guide associates these names with Hellraiser, Resident Evil 4, Seven, The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars, but it does not provide a line-by-line source for every name. Achievement wording is also easy to check yourself, which makes this the most verifiable part of the list for players who want to confirm it.

The guide gives a useful starting point for a second playthrough. The strongest matches are the Channard-style visuals, the Hell on Earth note and the Ozzy and Lemmy grave set. The weakest is the yellow balloon, and the Damballa magazine depends on how much weight you give to stock props. Because the guide says it may have missed other references, a short list of 13 should be read as one author’s finds, not a complete catalogue of the game’s nods.
For the official background on the game’s inspiration and format, use the Saber Interactive and Xbox Wire links above. For the references themselves, the GamesRadar+ guide remains the only source that enumerates them.
