13 Best Self-Hosted Open Source Web Analytics Platforms

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Umami is the best starting point for most privacy-conscious websites: it combines lightweight traffic reporting with events, funnels, retention and a self-hosted deployment. Choose Plausible CE or GoatCounter for simpler reports, Matomo or Open Web Analytics for broader website analytics, and PostHog, OpenReplay, Countly or OpenPanel when product events and user journeys matter. This guide covers the 13 platforms identified in the January 2025 roundup, while flagging claims that should be rechecked against each project’s current release and edition.

Choose by the job you need done

“Best” depends on what you are measuring. A blog that needs page views and referrers has different requirements from a SaaS team investigating feature adoption.

  • Simple website analytics: page views, referrers, top pages and campaign information with a small operational footprint. Umami, Plausible CE and GoatCounter fit this group.
  • Full web analytics: segmentation, goals, funnels, real-time reports, imports, exports or heatmaps. Matomo and Open Web Analytics are the broadest traditional choices; Swetrix and Pirsch cover many of the same needs with different trade-offs.
  • Product analytics: custom events, retention, session replay, experiments or feature-oriented analysis. PostHog, OpenReplay, Countly, OpenPanel and Aptabase are better aligned with applications than with a brochure site.
  • Server-log analysis: GoAccess is a separate approach that reads web-server access logs instead of relying on an in-page tracking script. It is useful when JavaScript tracking is undesirable, but it is not one of the 13 products in the roundup below.

Before installing anything, decide whether you can operate a Linux server, database, reverse proxy, TLS, backups and upgrades. Self-hosting gives you control over the data path, but it also makes you responsible for security and recovery.

The 13 platforms at a glance

Platform-by-platform guidance

1. Umami

Umami is the strongest general-purpose recommendation when you want a clean website dashboard without browser cookies. Its official documentation describes it as open source and privacy-first, with visitor, page and event reporting plus custom events, funnels, retention, session replay, performance monitoring and an API. It offers self-hosted and cloud deployments. Umami’s documentation says, “Additionally, when you self-host Umami you are in complete control of your data”; that is a statement about control, not a blanket legal-compliance guarantee. You still need to configure consent and retention for your jurisdiction.

2. Fathom Lite

Fathom Lite is the free, self-hostable version associated with the commercial Fathom product. The roundup describes fewer features than the paid service and a maintenance-only posture, while another comparison labels it archived or no longer updated. Treat that status as time-sensitive: inspect the current repository, release history and security notices before putting it on a new production system. It is mainly relevant when you already operate an installation and need continuity.

3. Aptabase

Aptabase is aimed at application analytics across mobile, desktop and web. Its multiple SDKs and anonymized-collection positioning make it a better match for a cross-platform app than for a site that only needs top pages and referrers. Map the events you need before choosing it, because app telemetry usually requires a more deliberate event taxonomy than pageview analytics.

4. Plausible CE

Plausible Community Edition focuses on simple traffic reporting. Plausible’s data policy says it does not use persistent identifiers, cookies, browser cache or local storage; it describes daily identifiers generated from a rotating salt and says raw IP addresses and User-Agent strings are not stored. Those are vendor statements, not an automatic legal determination. Confirm the CE’s current feature set separately from the hosted product, and configure consent, retention and access controls for your use case.

5. GoatCounter

GoatCounter is a lightweight choice for personal sites and small projects. The roundup highlights traffic, referrer, browser and campaign information and CSV export. Its limited scope can be an advantage when you want low administration and readable reports, but check current releases and deployment documentation before relying on it for a business-critical data pipeline.

6. Pirsch

Pirsch combines web analytics with events, goals, reports, APIs and SDKs and provides a self-hosting option. It can suit teams that want a programmable reporting layer without adopting a full product-analytics suite. Licensing distinctions and pricing change, so read the current license terms before embedding Pirsch in a commercial service.

7. Open Web Analytics

Open Web Analytics supplies conventional traffic reports along with click-stream and heatmap features. That makes it more capable than a minimal pageview counter, but the comparison characterizes its stack as dated. Treat it as a candidate for an existing deployment or an evaluation environment until you have confirmed current maintenance, security fixes and compatibility with your operating system.

8. Matomo

Matomo On-Premise is the broadest traditional website-analytics option in this list. The roundup describes real-time reporting, events, integrations, import/export and paid extensions for some advanced capabilities. It is a good fit when you need a mature reporting model or historical-data workflows and have staff for upgrades, database care and backups. Budget for the additional complexity rather than sizing it like a minimal analytics script.

9. OpenReplay

OpenReplay is centered on session replay, troubleshooting and collaboration, with product-analytics functions around those workflows. Choose it when seeing the sequence of clicks, errors and interface states is more valuable than a small traffic dashboard. Check the distinction between community and enterprise self-hosted editions before assuming a feature is available in the edition you can run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. OpenPanel

OpenPanel combines self-hosted web and product analytics with real-time reports, events, funnels, retention and SDKs. It is a reasonable middle ground for a team that has outgrown pageviews but does not want the full operational footprint of a large product-analytics deployment. The roundup observed export limitations at its publication date; verify current export and API behavior before making it your system of record.

11. Countly

Countly targets mobile and web product analytics. Events, funnels, cohorts and heatmaps support lifecycle and engagement analysis, while self-hosted editions provide deployment control. Compare the exact edition matrix: capabilities can differ between editions, and a feature listed for the platform as a whole may not be included in the edition you select.

12. PostHog

PostHog should be evaluated primarily as product analytics that also provides web analytics, not as a lightweight pageview counter. The roundup highlights events, sessions, replays and segmentation and notes feature limitations in self-hosted deployments. The comparison also emphasizes higher resource and operational demands. It is compelling for product-led teams that will use those capabilities; it is excessive for a small content site.

13. Swetrix

Swetrix is described as cookie-less analytics with events, campaign parameters, performance data, errors and funnels, plus self-hosting. That combination is useful when site reliability and marketing attribution belong in the same dashboard. Confirm current availability, release activity and which functions are included in the self-hosted edition before committing.

Deployment, resources and operating responsibility

Minimum planning checklist

  • Choose a supported Linux host or equivalent environment and keep the operating system patched.
  • Provide a domain or subdomain, TLS certificate and reverse proxy if the dashboard must be reachable remotely.
  • Choose and secure the database or supporting services required by the platform.
  • Set administrator access, least-privilege accounts, firewall rules and backup encryption.
  • Define retention, deletion and export procedures before collecting production data.
  • Test upgrades and restore a backup in a separate environment.

A deployment guide used for comparison lists a Linux server, remote-access domain and reverse proxy as its own assumptions; they are not universal requirements. Tracking method, database, script size and supporting services vary by project.

Illustrative resource estimates

The selfhosting.sh comparison, published November 22, 2025 and updated March 5, 2026, reports estimated idle memory rather than controlled benchmarks:

Platform Reported idle RAM estimate How to interpret it
GoatCounter About 30 MB Publisher estimate; traffic, retention and co-hosted services change real usage
Umami About 150 MB Publisher estimate, not a universal minimum
Matomo About 256 MB Publisher estimate; database load and extensions matter
Plausible About 500 MB Publisher estimate; treat as planning guidance only

Do not select a server solely from these numbers. Actual memory and CPU depend on traffic, retention, reporting queries, background jobs, configuration and whatever else shares the host. Product-analytics and replay systems generally need more planning than simple counters because they process richer event data.

Privacy, consent and data governance

“Cookieless” or “privacy-first” describes an implementation approach, not a legal guarantee. Review what the software sends, whether identifiers are generated, how IP addresses and User-Agent strings are handled, where data is stored, and how deletion works. Configure consent according to the jurisdictions and audiences you serve; a vendor’s compliance wording cannot replace legal advice.

Document the tracking design: events collected, retention period, administrator roles, subprocessors, export destinations and incident-response contacts. For replay and heatmaps, mask sensitive fields and exclude passwords, payment details and private messages before enabling collection.

Migration and data portability

Check for historical import, export formats and an API before switching. Even when a product imports old data, definitions may not map directly: sessions, visitors, bounce rate, attribution windows and event names can differ. Preserve a read-only copy of the old system, record the cutover date, and run both trackers for a short validation period if your consent model permits it. Compare trends rather than expecting identical totals.

Troubleshooting common failures

Dashboard is empty

Confirm the tracking script or SDK is loaded after deployment, the site is sending requests to the correct host, and the browser is not blocking the request through a content-security policy or extension. Check server logs and the platform’s real-time view before changing configuration.

Events are missing or duplicated

Use one event name and schema, verify that the event fires once per intended action, and remove duplicate tags from templates and tag managers. Test with a unique staging event before editing production code.

Reports disagree with another analytics tool

Compare time zone, bot filtering, consent rate, sampling, attribution window and definition of a session. Different privacy and identity models make exact parity unlikely.

Self-hosted service is slow

Inspect database load, report-query duration, queue workers, disk space and reverse-proxy timeouts. Reduce retention or expensive replay data, archive old records, and scale the database before simply increasing web-server workers.

Upgrade breaks tracking

Restore the last known-good backup in a test environment, read the release migration notes, and verify database schema changes before retrying. Keep application, database and proxy versions documented so you can roll back consistently.

When you need screenshots of analytics pages

Analytics platforms answer “what happened”; automated screenshots are useful for scheduled reports, issue tickets and visual checks. ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to try when you want an API rather than maintaining a browser worker: it removes cookie-consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and returns headers identifying page verdict and billing status.

It supports PNG, JPEG, WebP and PDF output, full-page or CSS-selector captures, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, blocking rules, cookies, headers, device presets, dark mode, geolocation, signed links, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture and an MCP server for AI agents. Those capabilities are separate from the analytics products above; use them to document dashboards without adding a browser-rendering service to your stack.

One-call capture

See the complete parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/analytics -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com/analytics"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com/analytics' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads and cache hits are not billed. The MCP server lets Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients call screenshot tools directly. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Bottom line

Start with Umami for a balanced, privacy-oriented website deployment. Pick Plausible CE or GoatCounter when simplicity matters more than depth; Matomo or Open Web Analytics when you need traditional web-analytics breadth; and PostHog, OpenReplay, Countly, OpenPanel or Aptabase when product events and user journeys are central. Treat Fathom Lite, older stacks and edition-specific claims as verification tasks, and plan self-hosting around backups, upgrades, security and actual workload rather than a single memory figure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run two analytics platforms at the same time?

Yes, but document why each is present and account for duplicate requests, consent signals, page weight and potentially conflicting event names. A short parallel validation period is safer than an indefinite dual-tracking setup.

Should a small site use session replay?

Only when you have a defined debugging or usability question and can mask sensitive fields. Replay adds governance and storage work that a basic pageview dashboard does not require.

Is self-hosting automatically more private than using a hosted service?

No. It gives you control over infrastructure and retention, but your configuration, administrator access, backups, logs and integrations still determine how data is handled.

How often should I reassess an open-source analytics project?

Review release activity, security advisories, dependency updates, issue responses and documentation at least before major upgrades and whenever the project is being considered for a new production workload.
