If Edge keeps history, cookies, or other browsing data after you close it, first check that the specific data category is selected in Edge’s clear-on-close settings. Then test a full close and reopen before moving through policies, cookie permissions, extensions, Windows time, and a fresh profile. Edge does not clear browsing data on close by default, and the cause depends on the affected profile and any policies applied to it.
Work through the checks below in order, changing one thing at a time. After each change, close every Edge window, reopen the browser, and check the same data category again.

1. Identify which data is still there
“Browsing data” covers separate categories, so first check what failed to clear. Microsoft distinguishes browsing history, download history, cookies and site data, cached files, passwords, autofill data, and site permissions. A setting for one category does not necessarily clear the others.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Browsing history: visited page addresses and their dates and times.
- Download history: the list of downloads—not the downloaded files on your PC.
- Cookies and site data: information stored by websites, which can include sign-in details, preferences, location, or media licenses.
- Cached images and files: saved copies that can help pages load faster.
- Passwords, autofill data, and site permissions: separate categories with their own controls.
Also distinguish data on this device from information stored in a Microsoft privacy dashboard. Clearing synced items may affect other devices using the same sync account. See Microsoft’s explanation of the categories and sync behavior in View and delete browser history in Microsoft Edge.

2. Confirm the clear-on-close selections
In Edge, open edge://settings/privacy/clearBrowsingData/clearOnClose. Check the controls for the categories you want removed and make sure each is enabled. If the problem is that a site signs you out, focus on Cookies and other site data; if history remains, check the history control instead.
Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking this page and the relevant category before investigating other causes: Troubleshoot browsing data not deleted when Microsoft Edge closes. The page’s setting is for data removal, not for preserving it.
3. Run a complete close-and-reopen test
Close all Edge windows, not just the tab or window showing the affected site. Reopen Edge and check the same category you identified in step 1. The feature is intended to run when Edge closes; a controlled test helps separate a setting problem from a browser that was not fully closed. The original feature description notes the all-windows behavior: Microsoft Edge Community Hub discussion of clearing browsing data on close.

4. Compare with manual clearing
Manually clear the same category once to see whether Edge can remove it outside the close-on-exit process. In Edge, go to Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Clear browsing data > Choose what to clear, select the relevant category, and clear it. If manual clearing works but close-on-exit does not, keep troubleshooting the close behavior rather than assuming the data is undeletable. Microsoft documents the category controls and manual route in its browser history and data guidance.
5. Check whether an organization manages Edge
Open edge://policy and look for active policies. A work or school administrator may set browser behavior for your profile, and a policy can determine what happens when Edge closes. If this is a managed device, ask the administrator to review the relevant setting rather than trying to override it yourself.
6. Look for the clear-on-exit policy
On edge://policy, check whether ClearBrowsingDataOnExit is enabled. Microsoft says this policy deletes browsing data when Edge closes, applies per profile, and takes precedence over DefaultCookiesSetting when enabled. It is supported on Windows and macOS starting with Edge version 78, can be mandatory or recommended, and requires a browser restart for policy refresh. Microsoft also cautions against configuring overlapping deletion policies. These are administrator controls; home users should not casually edit the registry or enterprise policy settings.

See Microsoft’s policy reference for the full scope and behavior: ClearBrowsingDataOnExit policy. Its documentation states that Edge does not clear browsing data by default when it closes.
7. Review cookie permissions for the affected site
If the symptom is that one website keeps you signed in—or signs you out—open edge://settings/content/cookies. Confirm that sites are allowed to save and read cookie data as intended, then review both the Block and Clear on close lists for the affected domain. A site-specific entry may explain why that site behaves differently from others.
8. Test tracking prevention without leaving it weakened
For a sign-in problem, temporarily set Tracking prevention to Basic and retest the affected site after closing and reopening Edge. If that changes the result, restore Balanced and add a narrow exception for the site only if needed. Do not leave a less protective setting in place simply because it changed the symptom. Microsoft includes this test and exception guidance in its Edge browsing-data troubleshooting article.

9. Rule out an extension
A privacy, cookie-management, or cleanup extension can alter or purge site data. Disable all extensions temporarily, fully close and reopen Edge, and repeat the same test. If the issue disappears, re-enable extensions one at a time and retest after each one to find the cause. Microsoft notes that a privacy or cookie-management extension can purge cookies in the background.
10. Correct Windows date and time
Authentication cookies can expire or become invalid when the system clock is significantly out of sync, which can look like Edge cleared them. In Windows 11, open Settings > Time & language > Date & time, turn on automatic time and automatic time zone, then select Sync now. Retest the affected sign-in site after the clock synchronizes. Microsoft lists clock and time-zone checks among its recommended troubleshooting steps: Edge browsing-data troubleshooting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems11. Test with a new Edge profile
Add a profile from edge://settings/profiles and reproduce the issue there. Select the same clear-on-close categories and test with the same site or data type. If the new profile works while the original does not, the problem is likely specific to the original profile. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance says that if cookies persist in the new profile, the original profile is likely corrupted.
12. Gather details if the problem persists
Open edge://version and record the Edge version. Then open edge://policy and export or record the active policies. Note which category remains, whether manual clearing works, and whether the issue occurs in a new profile. These details help support staff distinguish a policy, profile, or category-specific problem. A 2023 Microsoft Q&A thread describes one Windows 11 22H2 user’s report, but it does not establish a current Edge-wide defect: Microsoft Q&A: Edge “Clear browsing data on close” not working.
