If Start is unavailable, Windows 11 also offers keyboard shortcuts, the security screen, command-line tools, desktop shortcuts, and configurable hardware controls. Save your work before using commands, timed shutdowns, or any forced power-off.
Choose the right shutdown method
| Method | Needs desktop? | Shutdown type | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Start > Power | No | Interactive | Standard route |
| Windows + X | No | Interactive | Menu labels can vary |
| Windows + D, Alt + F4 | Yes | Interactive | Alt + F4 otherwise closes the active app |
| Ctrl + Alt + Delete | No | Interactive | May be restricted in remote or kiosk sessions |
| Sign-in screen | No | Interactive | Warns about other signed-in users |
| Run dialog | No | Command | Save work first |
| Command Prompt | No | Command or timed | Timeouts greater than zero imply forced closure |
| PowerShell | No | Command | -Force can lose data |
| Desktop shortcut | No | Command | Easy to activate accidentally |
| Power button setting | No | Configured interactive action | Firmware or policy may limit choices |
| Lid-close setting | No | Configured interactive action | Separate battery and plugged-in settings |
| Long press | No | Hard power-off | Emergency use only |
Sleep keeps your session ready to resume, while hibernation saves the session to storage and resumes more slowly. Neither is a complete shutdown. Options differ by device, policy, and whether hibernation is enabled. See Microsoft’s explanation of shutdown, sleep, and hibernation.
1. Use the Start menu
- Select Start.
- Select Power.
- Select Shut down.
This is the clearest default for most PCs. Microsoft documents the same path in its Windows shutdown instructions.
2. Use the Windows + X power-user menu
- Press Windows + X, or right-click Start.
- Select Shut down or sign out.
- Select Shut down.
This is a quick alternative when you prefer the keyboard or a right-click. Do not rely on a fixed accelerator letter: it can change with language and Windows build.

3. Shut down with Alt + F4 from the desktop
- Press Windows + D to show the desktop.
- Press Alt + F4.
- Choose Shut down in the dialog and select OK, or press Enter.
With an application focused, Alt + F4 closes that application instead. Microsoft describes this behavior in its keyboard shortcut reference.
4. Use the Ctrl + Alt + Delete security screen
- Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete.
- Select the Power icon in the lower-right corner.
- Select Shut down.
This is useful when the desktop or Start menu is unresponsive, provided the security screen still works. Remote-desktop, kiosk, and policy-restricted sessions can behave differently.
5. Shut down from the sign-in screen
- Press Windows + L to lock the PC, or sign out.
- Select the Power icon on the sign-in screen.
- Select Shut down.
If another account is signed in, Windows may warn that its unsaved work could be lost. Microsoft documents account and sign-in controls at user account access in Windows.

- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
6. Run shutdown.exe from the Run dialog
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
shutdown.exe /s /t 0. - Press Enter.
/s requests shutdown and /t 0 sets a zero-second timeout. This built-in Windows command is documented by Microsoft at shutdown command reference. Save files first; command-line shutdown is not a replacement for saving work.
7. Use Command Prompt
- Open Command Prompt.
- Run
shutdown /s /t 0. - Press Enter.
For a delayed shutdown, you can run shutdown /s /t 600 (600 seconds, or 10 minutes). Microsoft states that a timeout greater than zero implies /f, forcing applications to close, so save work before scheduling one.
8. Use PowerShell
- Open PowerShell or Windows PowerShell.
- Run
Stop-Computer. - Press Enter.
Stop-Computer shuts down the local computer by default. The documented -Force parameter forces immediate closure and should not be routine. Administrators can target another machine with Stop-Computer -ComputerName "PC-NAME", subject to permissions, networking, and policy. See Microsoft’s Stop-Computer documentation.

9. Create a one-click desktop shortcut
- Right-click an empty area of the desktop and select New > Shortcut.
- Enter
C:WindowsSystem32shutdown.exe /s /t 0. - Select Next, name it Shut down Windows, and select Finish.
- Optionally open Properties to change its icon or assign a shortcut key.
Use an unmistakable name and avoid a convenient hotkey if accidental activation would be a problem.
10. Schedule a shutdown and cancel it if necessary
Schedule
In Command Prompt or Run, enter shutdown /s /t 600 for a 10-minute delay. Because a nonzero timeout implies forced application closure, save all work first.
Cancel
During the countdown, open a new Command Prompt or Run dialog and enter shutdown /a. The /a switch aborts a pending shutdown; it does not shut down the PC.

11. Configure the physical power button
- Open Control Panel.
- Go to System and Security > Power Options.
- Select Choose what the power buttons do.
- Set When I press the power button to Shut down.
- Select Save changes.
A brief press uses this configured action; holding the button is a separate emergency procedure. Manufacturer firmware and enterprise policy can limit available choices. The same Power Options area is covered in Microsoft’s power guidance.
12. Configure closing a laptop lid to shut down
- Open Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options.
- Select Choose what closing the lid does.
- Set When I close the lid to Shut down for On battery, Plugged in, or both.
- Select Save changes.
Test both power states. This is often a poor default because an accidental lid close can terminate the session; sleep or hibernate may be safer. Hibernation is not available on every PC.

Shut down is missing
Possible causes include device-management policy, user-right restrictions, a damaged shell, a pending update, or remote-desktop or kiosk limitations. Try the security screen, sign-in screen, or a command if the shell still responds. The command may require the Shut down the system user right.

An application will not close
Return to the interactive Start, security-screen, or sign-in-screen method so the application can display a save prompt. Avoid adding /f or using Stop-Computer -Force unless losing unsaved data is acceptable.
The PC is frozen
- Wait briefly in case Windows is finishing an update or closing a process.
- Try Ctrl + Alt + Delete.
- Try the sign-in-screen Power menu.
- Use
shutdown.exeif the keyboard and shell respond. - As a last resort, hold the physical power button until the machine turns off.
The final step is a hard power-off, not a normal shutdown, and can lose unsaved work. Microsoft describes it as an emergency procedure in its Surface power-state guidance.
Bonus: shut down another Windows PC
With suitable administrative rights and network access, Command Prompt supports shutdown /s /m \PC-NAME /t 0. PowerShell supports Stop-Computer -ComputerName "PC-NAME". Correct names, credentials, firewall rules, and policy are required; neither method works universally on every home network.
Quick Recap
Which method should you use?
- Most people: Start > Power > Shut down.
- Keyboard users: Windows + D, Alt + F4, then Enter.
- Start menu problems: Ctrl + Alt + Delete or the sign-in screen.
- Frequent shutdowns: A clearly named desktop shortcut or configured power button.
- Automation:
shutdown.exeorStop-Computer, with forced options avoided by default. - Frozen system: A long power-button press only after normal routes fail.
