The safe recovery method depends on whether the locked account is a Microsoft account, local account, standard user, or work/school account—and whether another authorized administrator or recovery key is available. Start by identifying the account shown on the sign-in screen, then use the matching supported method below. If none applies, Reset this PC may be the only supported option.

Identify the account before changing anything
Microsoft account
An email address ending in Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live, or another Microsoft-account address usually indicates a personal Microsoft account. Its password is also used for services such as OneDrive and Outlook. Use Microsoft’s account recovery process: Microsoft account password recovery.
Local account
A local account normally shows a device-specific username rather than an email address. Its credential is stored for that Windows installation and does not depend on Microsoft-account connectivity. Use security questions, a password-reset disk, or an authorized administrator.
Work or school account
An organizational email address may belong to Microsoft Entra ID, a domain, Microsoft 365, or an Intune-managed device. Personal Microsoft-account recovery links may not apply; follow your organization’s self-service process or contact its help desk.

Password, PIN, and BitLocker key are different
- Password: Authenticates a local, Microsoft, or organizational account.
- Windows Hello PIN: A device-specific sign-in method, not necessarily the Microsoft-account password. The I forgot my PIN option is generally for eligible Microsoft accounts, not local accounts. See Microsoft’s PIN guidance.
- BitLocker recovery key: Unlocks an encrypted drive. It cannot be used as a Windows login password.
Reset a Microsoft account password
Use this route for a personal Microsoft account used to sign in to Windows 11.
- At the sign-in screen, select I forgot my password, if shown.
- Alternatively choose Sign-in options and select Web sign-in, when available.
- Complete Microsoft’s identity-verification checks and create a new password.
- If the sign-in-screen control is unavailable, use another device to open Microsoft’s password-reset page.
- Reconnect the PC to the internet and sign in with the new password.
A working PIN, fingerprint, or face-recognition method can provide access even when the password is forgotten. After signing in, open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options, select Password, and use Change or the available forgotten-password recovery control. Resetting a Microsoft-account password does not reset a separate local account.

Security questions
- Select the account’s password sign-in method.
- Enter an incorrect password, select OK, then choose Reset password.
- Answer the security questions configured when the account was created.
- Enter and confirm a new password.
Microsoft’s instructions are at Change or reset a local account password. The option will not appear if the account is actually a Microsoft account, questions were never configured, policy changes the sign-in screen, or you are trying to reset a different account.

Use another administrator to reset a local user’s password
If another authorized administrator can sign in to the same PC, that account can generally reset a local user’s password:
- Sign in with the other administrator.
- Open Computer Management.
- Go to Local Users and Groups > Users.
- Right-click the affected account and select Set Password.
- Accept the warning and create the new password.
- Test the user’s sign-in and access to important files.
Local Users and Groups is not exposed identically on every edition; Windows Home may lack the same management console as Pro, Enterprise, or Education. The reset restores sign-in access but can affect credentials protected by the old password, including some certificates, stored credentials, and encrypted files. See Microsoft’s account-role guidance at Manage user accounts in Windows.

What a standard user can—and cannot—do
A standard user cannot normally reset another account or promote itself to administrator through supported Windows settings. Try the account’s own Microsoft or local recovery first, then use an existing administrator or contact the device owner, family administrator, employer, school, or managed-service provider. If no authorized administrator and no recovery option exists, Windows reset or professional support may be necessary.

Microsoft Entra self-service password reset (SSPR) works only when the organization has enabled it and the user has registered authentication methods. Network access is required, and the sign-in workflow can create a temporary low-privilege account named defaultuser1. Proxy and port-443 rules may also matter.
- At the organizational sign-in screen, choose I forgot my password or the organization’s reset option.
- Complete the registered verification methods.
- Create the new password and reconnect to organizational services.
- If no reset option appears, contact the help desk or administrator.
See Microsoft Entra SSPR for Windows sign-in. Microsoft 365, Intune, and Azure administrators should follow their organization’s recovery process, another administrator, or Microsoft’s guidance at Forgot sign-in password. Do not independently reset a company PC; doing so can remove enrollment, certificates, applications, and required policy.

When BitLocker appears before sign-in
BitLocker recovery is a separate protection layer. If Windows asks for a 48-digit recovery key, locate the key before changing partitions or resetting the installation. Possible locations include the owner’s Microsoft account, Microsoft Entra ID, Active Directory, a printed copy, USB storage, or the organization’s management portal and help desk. Microsoft’s explanation is at BitLocker recovery process.
Without the key, password-reset techniques are not a reliable way to reach encrypted files. Do not delete or format partitions while searching for it.
Last resort: Reset this PC
Use Reset this PC only after checking backups, recovery options, and the BitLocker key. From a signed-in session, go to Settings > System > Recovery > Reset PC. In Windows Recovery Environment, select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
- Keep my files: Reinstalls Windows and normally preserves personal files, but removes installed apps and settings. It is not a password-preserving repair.
- Remove everything: Removes personal files, apps, and settings.
- Cloud download: Downloads a fresh Windows image.
- Local reinstall: Uses files already on the device.
Windows may request the BitLocker recovery key. Microsoft’s current options are described at Reset your PC. Microsoft does not provide a secret override for a lost local password, and its support agents cannot retrieve or circumvent one when normal recovery fails.
