Depth Effect on the iPhone lock screen uses motion + depth data so your wallpaper shifts with parallax. When it stops working on iOS 26, it usually comes down to a capability mismatch, a setting conflict, or a wallpaper/effect cache issue.

Prerequisites and quick checks before changing settings
Before you toggle half the Settings app, confirm the basics that determine whether Depth Effect can work at all.
- Confirm your wallpaper supports Depth Effect: not every dynamic wallpaper has depth/parallax data.
- Check you’re on iOS 26: go to Settings → General → About → verify iOS Version.
- Use the lock screen you’re actually testing: iOS can have multiple lock screens. Always test the one currently selected under Customize.

1) Verify Depth Effect is enabled for the exact lock screen wallpaper

Open the lock screen customization: Press and hold the lock screen → tap Customize → select the lock screen panel you want to test → find Depth Effect (or the wallpaper effect controls) and make sure it’s set to On.

2) Confirm the wallpaper type is actually compatible
Some wallpapers look like they should have depth, but only certain wallpapers include depth data. If the wallpaper doesn’t support it, toggles may appear, but no parallax will happen.
Try a known depth-capable wallpaper: use the built-in lock screen wallpaper set, then re-enable Depth Effect and test again.
3) Turn off Low Power Mode and retest
Low Power Mode can reduce or alter visual effects behavior. Even when the UI says Depth Effect is enabled, iOS may throttle the effect.
Go to Settings → Batteries → turn Low Power Mode Off. Lock the phone and unlock it after 10–20 seconds, then test the lock screen tilt/parallax.

4) Disable Reduce Motion (Accessibility)
If you have motion reduction enabled, Depth Effect may be suppressed because it relies on motion cues.
Open Settings → Accessibility → Motion → turn Reduce Motion Off. Then lock your iPhone and test the lock screen again.
5) Toggle Perspective Zoom off and back on
Depth-related wallpaper behaviors can conflict with other wallpaper motion settings. Toggling them forces iOS to re-evaluate the lock screen effect pipeline.
Go to Settings → Wallpaper → find Perspective Zoom and turn it Off. Lock the iPhone, wait 10 seconds, then set Perspective Zoom back to On and re-test Depth Effect on the lock screen.

A common failure mode after iOS upgrades is that the wallpaper effect state gets out of sync with the lock screen.
Do this: Press and hold lock screen → Customize → choose Wallpaper → reselect the same wallpaper → turn Depth Effect On again → tap Done. Lock your iPhone and test.
7) Restart your iPhone (not just lock/unlock)

Restart: press and hold Side button + Volume (for supported models) until the power slider appears, then power off. Turn it back on, then test the lock screen.
8) Force-refresh the lock screen by switching to another lock screen and back
Lock screen “pages” can get cached. Swapping away and back forces iOS to rebuild the active lock screen presentation.
Press and hold lock screen → swipe to a different lock screen → verify it loads normally → then swipe back to the one where Depth Effect should work → ensure Depth Effect is On → test.
9) Check iCloud Sync is working for wallpapers
If your lock screen or wallpaper configuration isn’t synced properly, you can end up with a display config that doesn’t match your settings on other devices.
Open Settings → tap your Apple ID → iCloud → confirm the relevant iCloud options for personalization/wallpapers are enabled (wording varies). Then wait a few minutes while your iPhone completes syncing, and retest Depth Effect.

Depth Effect failures can happen in early builds if wallpaper effect rendering changes. If you installed a beta profile, the issue might be a known bug specific to that build.
Go to Settings → General → Software Update and check if there’s a newer iOS 26 update available. Update to the latest build, or if you’re on a beta channel, consider moving off it if the problem persists.

11) Reset lock screen configuration by reapplying the wallpaper set
If the lock screen effect settings are corrupted, reapplying the wallpaper (not just toggling the switch) can reset the configuration.
On the lock screen: press and hold → Customize → choose Wallpaper → select a different wallpaper temporarily → then choose your target wallpaper again → set Depth Effect to On → tap Done.

If Depth Effect still doesn’t animate, focus on deeper system-level and hardware-related causes.
Try a clean “test wallpaper” approach
Use a built-in default lock screen wallpaper that clearly supports depth (rather than a downloaded image). If Depth Effect works there, the issue is with your original wallpaper file or effect metadata.
Check for conflicting accessibility and display settings
Review: Settings → Accessibility for motion and contrast settings that may suppress animation. Also check Display & Brightness settings that change visual behavior (e.g., any “reduce motion” style options).
Back up and update again (or re-download the update)
Corrupted update packages can lead to UI/graphics regressions. In Settings → General → Software Update, if an update is available, install it. If you already updated, consider downloading again if the update manager offers that path.
