11 Tasks You’ll Regret Trusting ChatGPT With—and What to Do Instead

ChatGPT can be helpful, but confidence is not proof. Know when to verify, get professional advice, protect sensitive information, and supervise agents.

ChatGPT can be useful, but it can also make mistakes confidently, mishandle sensitive information, and—when connected to tools—take actions outside the chat. The practical rule is to be more cautious as the consequences of an error, the sensitivity of your input, or the assistant’s ability to act increase. These 11 examples are a risk guide, not an official list of prohibited uses.

How to judge whether a task is safe to delegate

Before relying on an answer, ask four questions: What happens if it is wrong? Can I check it against an independent source? Am I sharing sensitive information? Can ChatGPT take an external action, or is it only drafting a response? A low-stakes brainstorming error is different from a medical decision, and a draft is different from a submitted form or changed account setting.

OpenAI warns that ChatGPT can produce incorrect or misleading answers, including fabricated quotes, studies, citations, and references, and can sound confident while doing so. Its guidance is to verify important claims and check quotes, data, technical information, and references against reliable sources. OpenAI Help Center: Does ChatGPT tell the truth?

11 tasks to keep under your own judgment

1. Treating a confident answer as verified fact

Do not rely on a fluent answer as proof that a claim is true. This matters especially for facts that are difficult to check from memory, such as a quotation, a study’s findings, a legal rule, or a technical specification. Open the cited source and confirm that it exists and says what the answer claims. If no source is supplied, look for an authoritative one yourself.

2. Using it to diagnose or treat a health problem

ChatGPT Health is described by OpenAI as support for understanding and preparing for care, not a substitute for care, diagnosis, or treatment. Its help page says: “Health is designed to support, not replace, medical care and is not intended for diagnosis or treatment.” For urgent symptoms or emergencies, seek immediate professional help rather than waiting for a chatbot response. 3. Asking it to interpret specialized medical images

A general image upload is not a dependable way to interpret a CT scan or another specialized medical image. OpenAI’s image-input guidance says such images are unsuitable for interpretation and should not be used for medical advice. Leave image interpretation and decisions about care to qualified clinicians. OpenAI Help Center: ChatGPT Image Inputs FAQ

4. Making a consequential financial decision from its recommendation

ChatGPT can help explain financial concepts or organize questions, but that is not the same as personalized financial advice. OpenAI’s May 2026 personal-finance guidance says ChatGPT cannot act as a financial, legal, tax, or investment adviser. Use qualified advice where appropriate, and independently verify information before making decisions about money. OpenAI Help Center: ChatGPT — Release Notes

5. Letting it move money, place trades, or pay bills

Do not assume a chat response or financial feature can safely carry out a transaction. The same May 2026 guidance says ChatGPT cannot move money, pay bills, place trades, or file taxes. Keep control of financial accounts and review any transaction directly in the relevant service. OpenAI Help Center: ChatGPT — Release Notes

6. Treating it as your lawyer or tax professional

It can help you understand terminology or prepare questions, but it should not make the final call on your legal position or tax filing. OpenAI’s product guidance explicitly says ChatGPT cannot act as a legal or tax adviser. Rules and outcomes depend on details and jurisdiction, so verify with official sources or a qualified professional before acting. OpenAI Help Center: ChatGPT — Release Notes

7. Sharing sensitive personal information casually

Consumer-service content may be used to improve model performance depending on your settings. OpenAI says content is stored on its systems and trusted service-provider systems in the United States and around the world; a limited number of authorized personnel and providers may access it for specified purposes. The company advises: “Please do not enter sensitive information that you would not want reviewed or used.” Avoid casually pasting passwords, financial account details, medical records, or other information you would not want handled this way. 8. Assuming a setting makes every conversation private

Eligible individual-service users can turn off the “Improve the model for everyone” control for new conversations and tasks, according to OpenAI’s data-use guidance. That setting is about model improvement; do not treat it as a promise that content is never stored or accessed. Check the current controls and policy in your account, since product settings can change. OpenAI Help Center: How your data is used to improve model performance

9. Trusting an exact count from an image

Image descriptions can be wrong, and OpenAI notes that object counts may be approximate. If an exact count matters—for example, when checking inventory or documenting evidence—count it yourself or use a method designed for that task. OpenAI Help Center: ChatGPT Image Inputs FAQ

10. Relying on image analysis for graphs or precise locations

Image input may have difficulty with graphs and precise spatial localization. Do not use a visual answer as the sole basis for a consequential interpretation of a chart, diagram, or where something is located in an image. Check the underlying data or inspect the image directly. OpenAI Help Center: ChatGPT Image Inputs FAQ

11. Letting an agent operate signed-in websites without supervision

ChatGPT agent can use websites while signed in, which may expose sensitive information and enable actions such as sharing files or changing account settings. OpenAI identifies prompt injection as a risk and says safeguards do not remove every risk. Review what the agent is accessing, supervise its work, and retain direct approval over consequential actions rather than assuming it will distinguish every trustworthy instruction from malicious content. A practical decision rule

  • Low consequence, easy to check: use ChatGPT for drafts, explanations, or brainstorming, then correct errors.
  • High consequence: verify against primary sources or consult a qualified professional before acting.
  • Sensitive input: minimize what you share and review the service’s current data controls.
  • External action: supervise the tool and personally approve consequential steps.

These categories can overlap. For example, asking an agent to summarize private medical records combines sensitive input, a health context, and tool access; each risk calls for its own safeguard.
