For domestic US payments, ACH can be inexpensive in the examples available here; for international work, a multi-currency service such as Wise may help manage conversion. The right choice depends on the full fee stack, when money reaches your bank, how easily the client can pay, and the bookkeeping work involved. Current comparable fees are verified here for six methods—not 11—so the comparison below avoids presenting unverified rates as facts.
How to compare freelancer payment methods
Look beyond the advertised processing percentage. A transaction can also incur a fixed fee, a cross-border surcharge, a currency-conversion spread, a bank charge, or a payout fee. Compare the amount that will actually be usable in your bank account, in the currency you need.

- Total cost: Include percentage and fixed charges, conversion, international handling, bank fees, and any subscription required to use the payment workflow.
- Usable-funds timing: Processing time and bank payout time are not necessarily the same. An instant payout may cost extra, and an estimate is not a guarantee.
- Client convenience: Familiar payment options and simple invoice links can reduce friction; a client-required method may outweigh a small fee difference.
- Country and currency fit: Availability, account eligibility, and rates depend on location and payment rail.
- Administration: Invoice integration and reconciliation can save time, but weigh that convenience against software costs.
The fees and timing below are examples reported in FreshBooks’ guide updated April 30, 2026. They are not universal rate quotes; check the provider’s current terms for your country and account before choosing. FreshBooks: Best Payment Methods for Freelancers in 2026.
Fee and payout comparison for six documented methods
These figures are not perfectly equivalent: some are card-processing rates, some apply to bank rails, and Wise’s conversion charge is distinct from a card-processing fee. Use the table as a shortlist, then calculate a sample invoice using the route your client will actually use.

| Method | Fee examples in the FreshBooks guide | Reported timing | Best fit and trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| PayPal | Domestic US/Canada: 3.49% + $0.49; card/Apple Pay: 2.99% + $0.49. International fee: an additional 1.5%; conversion is described as typically 3–4% above mid-market. | Standard payout: 1–2 business days; instant payout costs extra. | Convenient where clients already use it; international charges can materially reduce the received amount. |
| Stripe | Domestic US/Canada card example: 2.9% + $0.30; international card: additional 0.8%; currency conversion: 2%. | Two business days in the guide’s standard payout example; instant payout costs extra. | Useful for payment links or integrated checkout; account setup and live rates depend on region. |
| Direct bank transfer | US ACH receipt: free in the guide’s example. Canadian Interac e-Transfer: usually free, though some banks charge $1–$1.50. Domestic incoming wire examples: $10–$25; international wires may add currency markups. | US ACH: 1–3 business days in the example. | Can be low-cost for domestic transfers, but “bank transfer” covers different rails and bank fee schedules. |
| Wise | Conversion: 0.35%–2%, commonly 0.5%–0.7% for major currency pairs in the guide. Domestic receipt: free; cross-border same-currency receipt: 0.3% up to 1 CAD. The guide also cites a one-time $31 charge to unlock local account details in 24 currencies. | Many payouts: 1–2 business days in the guide’s example. | Designed for multi-currency receipts; the guide says local receipt is available in 10+ currencies. Availability and charges vary by country and route. |
| Checks | Domestic checks are usually free; US international-check processing example: $10–$30. | Usable funds may take 1–2 weeks domestically and longer internationally. | A fallback when a corporate or government client requires it, not a speed-focused choice. |
| FreshBooks Payments | Card: 2.9% + $0.30; US ACH: 1%, capped at $10. The guide lists FreshBooks software starting at $23/month. | 1–2 business days in the guide’s payout example. | Combines invoicing, payment, time tracking, and expenses; account for the software subscription separately from processing. |
All amounts, currencies, and timing estimates in this table are the cited guide’s examples, not promises for every customer. “Domestic” rates are specifically identified as US/Canada examples where stated; the guide does not establish a universal regional price list. For Wise, the $31 unlock charge is a one-time example, not a recurring fee.
Which method fits your situation?
For a domestic US client paying by bank
Ask whether the client can pay by ACH and compare its transfer time with the client’s usual payment process. The guide’s US example says receiving ACH is free and takes 1–3 business days. It may be a cost-effective route, but confirm the bank and service terms rather than assuming all transfers are free.

A card processor such as Stripe can also add an international-card fee and a conversion fee. Which costs less depends on the country, currencies, transaction route, and account terms.

Stripe offers payment links and integrated checkout in the guide’s description; PayPal is described as familiar and quick to set up. What about Payoneer, Square, Venmo, Cash App, and marketplace payouts?
They are plausible candidates for particular client or platform arrangements, but the available material does not establish current official fees or eligibility for Payoneer, Square, Venmo Business, Cash App Business, or marketplace escrow payouts. A search-result excerpt describes Payoneer as potentially useful where freelance marketplaces integrate it, but that alone does not verify who qualifies or what a transfer costs. Do not treat these options as directly comparable to the six methods above without checking current provider terms and the specific marketplace’s payout rules. FreelancerTools fee-comparison page.

A practical way to choose before sending an invoice
- Confirm the client’s available method. Ask which payment rails and currencies they can use, and whether their procurement rules require a particular option.
- Calculate the net receipt. For the invoice amount, apply the percentage and fixed fee, then add international, conversion, bank, and payout charges that apply to that route.
- Check payout availability. Verify the expected time from payment to funds usable in your bank, including any extra charge for faster access.
- Check regional eligibility and terms. Confirm the service supports your country, currency, and account type, and review current pricing directly with the provider.
- Choose a repeatable workflow. Use invoice references and consistent records so payments can be matched to client invoices and books; favor integration when its time savings justify its cost.
