Prerequisites before you start
- Windows version: ideally Windows 10 Pro/Home. If you’re on Windows 10, confirm build in Settings → System → About. Windows 10 build 19045 is common on updated systems.
- Admin access: you’ll need an account that can install updates and change security settings.
- Time: plan 60–120 minutes for updates, verification, and first backup setup (longer on slow connections).
- Backup destination: a USB drive, external SSD, or network storage for backups. At minimum, you’ll want a place to store a System Image or your personal files.
If you’re troubleshooting an existing problem, don’t wipe anything yet. Start with the verification and backup steps first so you can roll back when you need to.
The 10PCG Checklist: Ten essential PC actions
Work through these in order. Each step reduces risk and prevents the next steps from being undermined by missing updates, weak security, or unstable drivers.
1) Install all Windows updates
Open Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update and click Check for updates. On Windows 10, also click View optional updates and install driver updates if offered and relevant.
Then restart once updates finish. Skipping reboots is one of the most common reasons “the fix didn’t work.”
2) Update device drivers (GPU, chipset, storage)
Check for driver updates via Device Manager (Win + X → Device Manager). Focus on Display adapters, Network adapters, and Storage controllers (or disk/RAID controllers if present).
For graphics, if you have an NVIDIA or AMD card, install the latest driver from the vendor site (avoid mismatched “beta” drivers unless you’re testing).
3) Turn on real-time security and run a full scan
Go to Windows Security → Virus & threat protection. Confirm Real-time protection is On and run Scan options → Full scan.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAfter the scan, check Protection history for quarantined items and follow the recommended actions.
4) Harden your sign-in: password + (preferably) MFA
Use a strong password and enable multi-factor authentication where available. For Microsoft accounts, sign-in security lives under your account security settings on the Microsoft side.
Locally, ensure your Windows PIN (if used) is set up and your account isn’t using an old, reused password.

5) Set up backups you can actually restore
Use Settings → Update & Security → Backup to enable File History (best for personal files) and/or System Image Backup via Control Panel for full system recovery.
Recommended Free Tools
Make sure the backup drive is reliable (not a flaky USB stick). Test the restore process once—restore a single file first.
6) Get storage under control (free space + tidy temp files)
Go to Settings → System → Storage. Enable Storage Sense if available and use Temporary files cleanup. A practical target: keep at least 15–20% of your drive free for smooth updates.
Also check large folders in Storage views (Downloads, Desktop, and video folders are the usual culprits).
7) Configure power and startup for speed
Open Settings → System → Power & sleep. For laptops, set power mode to Best performance when plugged in. On desktops, match performance needs to your use case.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Then disable bloat at startup: Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) → Startup apps → disable what you don’t need.
8) Reduce background clutter (services and browser extensions)
Audit what runs: Settings → Privacy areas and check which apps have background permissions you don’t want. Browser-side, remove unused extensions—extensions can quietly become the performance bottleneck.
If you rely on a specific tool, keep it. If you don’t, remove it—clean systems behave better under updates.
9) Verify networking health (Wi‑Fi drivers + DNS)
If Wi‑Fi is unreliable, update your network adapter driver and check Device Manager → Network adapters. Also review power-saving settings for the adapter if present.

- The original electronics toolkit: Designed for computer, smartphone, tablet, and gaming repair, backed by thousands of free instructions.
- Intentional selection: All the tools you need. A 64 precision bit driver set, tweezers, flex extension, opening tools, and anti-static wristband.
- Secure design: Magnetic case and foam insert ensure secure storage and transportation. Additionally, the inside of the lid serves as a sorting/organization tray.
- Lifetime Warranty: We'll replace anything that breaks, as long as you own it.
10) Establish a maintenance schedule (monthly checks)
Pick a cadence: first week of each month. Run Windows Update, review Windows Security history, and confirm backups completed successfully.
Keep your “change log.” When problems start, you’ll know what changed and when—this cuts troubleshooting time dramatically.
Security and privacy hardening that actually sticks
Security isn’t just antivirus. It’s patching, reducing exposure, and ensuring you can recover if something slips through.
Use Windows Security settings as your baseline
- Windows Security → Virus & threat protection: confirm real-time protection is enabled.
- Windows Security → Firewall & network protection: ensure the firewall is enabled for the active network profile.
- Windows Security → App & browser control: check protection settings like reputation-based protection.
Manage permissions instead of hunting symptoms
Common privacy/performance issues come from apps requesting broad permissions and staying active in the background. Review permissions under Settings → Privacy and disable anything you don’t use.
Also audit “startup apps” and remove unnecessary permissions to camera, microphone, and location for apps that don’t need them.
Avoid risky “cleaner” tools and sketchy driver download sites
Be cautious with third-party optimization/security tools that promise magic. If you need drivers, prefer the device manufacturer and OS-supported update channels.
Rule of thumb: if the tool can change core system behavior and you can’t explain what it changes, it’s probably not worth installing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Performance tuning without breaking anything
Most “speed” problems come from update backlog, low disk space, browser extensions, or misbehaving startup tasks—not from needing registry hacks.
Quick wins
- Restart after major updates.
- Ensure free space is healthy (again, aim for 15–20%).
- Remove browser extensions you don’t use.
- Disable startup apps in Task Manager.
When Windows feels sluggish: check the bottleneck
Open Task Manager → Performance. Look at which resource is pegged: CPU, memory, disk, or network.
If disk is consistently near 100%, it’s often storage-related (full drive, failing SSD/HDD, or heavy background indexing). If memory is maxed, close apps and check for runaway processes.

Clean install vs repair install
If your system is unstable or you’re carrying a lot of legacy junk, a repair approach can be faster than hunting issues forever. If you’re considering a wipe, back up first and write down key settings and installed apps.
When in doubt, start with updates, security scans, driver verification, and backup/restore testing.
Backups, restores, and data safety
Backups fail at the restore stage more than the creation stage. 10PCG treats restore testing as part of the job.
File History (good for personal files)
- Open Settings → Update & Security → Backup.
- Under Back up my files, click Add a drive.
- Choose your external drive and verify File History is On.
System Image Backup (good for full recovery)
- Open Control Panel.
- Go to System and Security → Backup and Restore (Windows 7).
- Select Create a system image and choose your external drive.
- Start the backup and label the disk clearly.
Restore test checklist
- Restore one file to verify you can access version history.
- If possible, test recovery media for broader system restore.
- Confirm the backup drive is visible and not failing.
Networking and reliability troubleshooting
Network issues look like “PC problems” because apps, downloads, and cloud sync fail. Treat the network as its own subsystem.
Basic diagnostics
- Confirm airplane mode is off and Wi‑Fi is enabled.
- Restart the router and the PC once (yes, it still works).
- Forget and reconnect to the Wi‑Fi network: Settings → Network & Internet → Wi‑Fi.
- In Device Manager, re-check Network adapters and update the driver.
DNS changes (when sites load slowly or time out)
If you notice browser delays only on some sites, DNS may be the culprit. Use a reputable public DNS provider and test again.
After changing DNS, reboot the PC to ensure the resolver behavior updates fully.
Common failures and how to fix them
Here are the failures you’ll actually see, plus the most effective first actions.
Windows Update repeatedly fails
Start with verification: confirm you have enough disk space and stable internet. Then run Windows Update again after a restart.
If it still fails, check update error codes in Windows Update. Use those codes to search Microsoft’s support pages and target the right component (often servicing stack, components, or driver conflicts).

PC is slow after an update
Check Task Manager for what’s consuming resources. If a specific process spikes CPU or disk after the update, that often points to indexing, a driver regression, or a startup change.
Try uninstalling the most recent driver update for the affected component, or roll back the driver in Device Manager.
The Tool Desk

Update the network adapter driver and check adapter power settings. Some Wi‑Fi adapters enter aggressive power-saving modes that cause dropouts.
Also try connecting to a different network. If the problem follows the PC across networks, focus on the adapter and driver; if it stays with the router, focus on the router settings or firmware.
When you should use Windows 10 vs Windows 11
Windows 10 remains a stable option for many systems, especially older hardware, while Windows 11 provides a newer UI and updated feature set.
If your hardware supports Windows 11 and you want longer runway for new features, Windows 11 is often the better end state. If you have compatibility constraints or enterprise tooling tied to Windows 10, stick with Windows 10 and focus on security, patching, and backups.
FAQs
How often should I run Windows Security scans?
Real-time protection runs continuously. For manual checks, run a Full scan monthly or whenever you suspect an infection (unexpected pop-ups, unusual browser redirects, or new unknown apps).
Do I need a system image if I already use File History?
File History focuses on your files. A system image is for full recovery of Windows, apps, and settings. If you can only do one, prioritize the one that matches your risk: files-only vs full disaster recovery.
What’s the most common reason performance tuning “doesn’t work”?
Low disk space and neglected updates. Many issues that look like “PC slowness” are actually storage pressure, outdated drivers, or heavy background tasks triggered by updates.
Can I skip driver updates?
You can, but it’s risky on systems with frequent crashes, connectivity issues, or new hardware. For stability, update the critical drivers first (chipset, storage, network, GPU), then retest.
Bottom Line
10PCG gives you a grounded, repeatable way to secure and stabilize a Windows PC: patch everything, lock down protection, control startup and storage, and make backups that you can restore—not just create.
If you do only one thing beyond troubleshooting, do the backup restore test. That one habit turns a bad day into a manageable recovery.
