The 1440p display has to resample the image because the two resolutions do not map pixel-for-pixel. How visible that softness is depends on the scaler, content, screen size, viewing distance and eyesight.
Why 1080p can look softer on a 1440p screen
An LCD has a fixed grid of physical pixels. Its sharpest signal match is its native resolution: 2560×1440 on a 1440p monitor. When a 1920×1080 image is enlarged to fill that grid, the display or computer must estimate values for pixels that are not present in the source. This process, called scaling or interpolation, can soften edges and fine detail; Intel’s gaming monitor guide also notes that scaling can cause blur or ghosting.

The mismatch is not an even whole-pixel enlargement. Each 1080p dimension must be multiplied by 4/3 to fill 1440p, so a source pixel cannot simply become an equal whole-number block of display pixels. The scaler blends or estimates values, and the result depends on its method and the image being shown. BenQ’s EX2780Q manual describes how lower resolutions are interpolated on that model and cautions that blur across pixel boundaries can vary with the image and original resolution.

For standard desktop formats, 1080p is 1920×1080, or 2,073,600 pixels; 1440p is 2560×1440, or 3,686,400 pixels. RTINGS’ comparison, accessed October 7, 2026, reports that 1440p has 78% more pixels than 1080p. That is extra potential detail when the source is native 1440p, not detail that a scaler can recover from a 1080p source. See RTINGS’ 1080p-versus-1440p comparison.
#1 Best Overall
- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
When the difference is most noticeable
- Text and fine interface details: small lettering, thin lines and sharp edges can reveal softness more readily than less detailed imagery.
- Pixel art and crisp graphics: scaling can make deliberately hard pixel boundaries look uneven or blurred. The effect varies with the scaler and source.
- Video and other detailed imagery: the content and scaling path affect the result; there is no single softness level that applies to every video or application.
- Screen size and pixel density: perceived sharpness depends on both the panel’s physical dimensions and its pixel count, not just the resolution label. Intel recommends considering pixel density in its monitor guide.
- Viewing distance and eyesight: sitting closer can make resolution differences easier to see, while distance and individual vision change how apparent they are.
- Scaler and processing path: a monitor, graphics card, operating system or application may perform the scaling. Microsoft notes that an adapter may fall back to its default scaling when a requested mode is unsupported; see its desktop image scaling documentation.
Softness does not mean the 1440p monitor is necessarily the worse display overall. Resolution alone does not determine contrast, color, brightness or motion handling, and those characteristics differ by model. RTINGS discusses those distinctions in its resolution comparison.
What to do with desktop, games and other content
For desktop work
Set the display output to 2560×1440 when possible. That gives the desktop a native-resolution signal and avoids having the monitor enlarge a lower-resolution desktop image. BenQ recommends using the EX2780Q’s native resolution for the clearest display performance in its manual. If an app or video itself is 1080p, that content may still be scaled within the desktop.
Rank #2
- Quality Visuals: The KG271U 27" IPS monitor with 2560 x 1440 QHD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail. The zero-frame design does away with the thick frames found on conventional monitors freeing up precious screen space.
- AMD FreeSync Technology: Say “goodbye” to stuttering and tearing. With AMD FreeSync, the monitor’s frames are synced with the graphics card’s frames, which eliminates screen tearing and provide the smoothest gaming experience.
- Up to 180Hz: The 180Hz refresh rate speeds up the frames per second to deliver an ultra-smooth 2D motion scene. With a rapid refresh rate of up to 180Hz, Acer Gaming Monitors shorten the time it takes for frame rendering, lower input lag and provide gamers an excellent in-game experience.
- Responsive!!: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be all rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting with KG271U Gaming Monitor.
- New Depths of Color Accuracy: is monitor is ideal for color-critical projects producing accurate colors, supporting DCI-P3 95%. An amazing monitor for graphic designers, photographers, and film editors.
For games
If a game cannot render at 1440p smoothly, one option is to render below native resolution and have the computer upscale the image while sending a 2560×1440 signal to the display. RTINGS says this approach generally produces better results in current gaming workflows than asking the monitor to scale a lower-resolution output. The available options depend on the graphics hardware, driver and game; upscaling changes the appearance but does not make the source equivalent to native 1440p detail.
If you prefer an un-stretched image
Scaling modes trade image size for geometry and sharpness. Microsoft documents centered, stretched and aspect-ratio-preserving scaling in its scaling guidance. Centered scaling leaves the source unscaled and can show black borders; full-screen stretching fills the panel but may distort the image; preserving the aspect ratio avoids distortion but can leave bars at the sides. Exact labels and availability vary by graphics hardware and software.

NVIDIA documents aspect-ratio, full-screen, no-scaling and integer-scaling choices in its desktop size and position guidance. No scaling keeps the image at its original size, so it appears smaller on the 1440p screen. Integer scaling duplicates pixels by a whole-number factor when supported; because 1440p is only 4/3 of 1080p in each dimension, integer scaling cannot both fill this screen and map the entire source in equal blocks.

- Advanced Synchronization Technologies: FreeSync Premium, G-Sync compatible and AdaptiveSync technology delivers a seamless, tear-free gaming experience by enabling VRR (variable refresh rate) by default
- High Dynamic Range Support: HDR technology supports HDR-10 format to enhance bright and dark areas for improved visual depth and contrast
- Package Contents: DisplayPort cable, L-shaped Screwdriver, Power cord, Power adapter, Quick start guide, Warranty Card
- Native sharpness: consider pixel density at the size and distance you will actually use.
- 1080p scaling: check what scaling modes the monitor, graphics hardware and apps support, especially if much of your content will remain at 1080p.
- Main use: text and productivity interfaces, video and games can reveal different scaling trade-offs.
- Gaming performance: rendering at 1440p requires more pixels than rendering at 1080p. Consider whether your graphics hardware can meet your desired frame rate at the settings you want.
- Panel characteristics: compare contrast, color, brightness, refresh rate and motion handling separately from resolution.
There is no source-backed percentage for how noticeable the softness will be to an individual viewer. The practical test is to consider your actual content, scaling path, distance and eyesight rather than assume every 1440p display will make 1080p look equally blurry.
