10 uBlock Origin Tips for Troubleshooting and Customizing Blocking

Use uBlock Origin’s logger, element tools, per-site controls, targeted rules, shortcuts, and backups to troubleshoot and customize blocking carefully.

uBlock Origin is easier to troubleshoot when you inspect what it is blocking before changing rules. These ten practical techniques help you diagnose a problem, make targeted adjustments, and back up your setup so experiments are reversible. Names and availability can vary by browser and extension version.

1. Open the logger before reproducing a problem

If a page fails to load or looks wrong, start with uBO’s logger. It records network requests and DOM-related filtering activity while it is open, showing which filters or rules matched and what action uBO took. The important detail: it records activity prospectively, not requests that happened before you opened it.

  1. Open the uBlock Origin dashboard and select the logger, or use its configured keyboard shortcut.
  2. Leave the logger open, then reload the affected page or repeat the action that causes the problem.
  3. Look for the relevant request or filtering entry and inspect the matched filter and action.

The project identifies the logger as a troubleshooting tool, and its troubleshooting guide recommends it when a page does not load or display as expected.

2. Pick a page element to create a cosmetic filter

Use the element picker when you want to hide a recurring visual element, such as an overlay or an unwanted page section. The picker can create a custom cosmetic filter in My filters. That rule is local to your uBO setup and may need adjustment if the site changes its layout or markup.

  1. Open the picker from uBO’s interface or use its configured shortcut.
  2. Select the element you want to hide and review the proposed filter.
  3. Apply it only if the preview targets the intended element; inspect the page afterward.

A picker is not a guarantee that every element can be removed cleanly: some page features depend on the same structure or scripts as the element you are trying to hide. See the project’s keyboard shortcut reference for picker availability and controls.

3. Zap an element for temporary cleanup

For a one-time cleanup, use the element zapper instead of saving a rule. It temporarily removes a selected element from the current page; it does not create the persistent custom filter that the picker can make. This is useful when you want to clear a distraction without maintaining a site-specific rule.

Choose the zapper from the extension interface or its configured shortcut, then select the unwanted element. If it returns after the page is reloaded, that is expected: zapping is temporary. The official shortcut reference describes both the picker and zapper.

4. Try per-site switches before writing a broad rule

When a particular site misbehaves, test a relevant per-site switch before adding a general filter. The dashboard settings documentation links to controls for cosmetic filtering, large media, remote fonts, and scripting. Change one control at a time, reload, and check whether the page works as intended.

  • Cosmetic filtering: Useful to test if the problem is a hidden or altered page element.
  • Large media: Try this if images or other large media are missing.
  • Remote fonts: Try this if typography or layout is affected.
  • Scripting: Changing script behavior can affect site functionality; do not treat it as consequence-free.

Use the current dashboard and the project’s settings documentation to find the corresponding controls in your browser version.

5. Add filter lists only for a clear need

More selected lists do not automatically mean better blocking. The project warns that adding lists can increase breakage and interference, and recommends keeping uBlock Origin’s own filters enabled. If you have a specific gap you want to address, add a relevant list and see whether it solves that problem before making another change.

  1. In the dashboard, open Filter lists.
  2. Review the available lists and select one only when its purpose matches a need you can identify.
  3. Apply the change and check the sites and features you rely on.

If something breaks, undo the most recent list change first. The project’s filter-list guidance explains the trade-off.

6. Use advanced-user mode only if you will manage its rules

Advanced-user mode exposes dynamic filtering and behind-the-scene request filtering. These features allow more direct control, but a mistaken rule can affect more than one page or site. Enable the mode only if you are ready to understand and maintain the rules it makes available; the project advises against changing advanced options you do not understand.

Before changing dynamic rules, read the dashboard’s settings documentation and make a backup. If you only need to address one identifiable request, a URL-specific rule may be a more targeted choice.

7. Use a URL-specific rule to address an identified request

When the logger shows a particular request is involved in a breakage, a URL-specific rule can be more granular than host-level dynamic filtering. The project documentation says URL rules take precedence over dynamic and static filters. That makes them useful for a targeted repair, but it also means an allow rule can override a broader block.

  1. Open the logger before reloading the affected page.
  2. Find the request associated with the problem and select it.
  3. Create a URL rule for the specific request rather than allowing or blocking a wider host unnecessarily.
  4. Retest the page and remove or revise the rule if it does not solve the identified problem.

Keep the exception as narrow as possible so it changes only the behavior you intend. Consult Dynamic URL filtering for rule behavior and precedence.

8. Assign shortcuts to tools you use often

Keyboard shortcuts can make the logger, dashboard, picker, or zapper quicker to reach. The project’s shortcut reference also lists actions for toggling cosmetic filtering and JavaScript, as well as relaxing blocking mode. Shortcut availability and configuration are controlled by the browser, so the exact path differs.

  1. Open your browser’s extension or add-on shortcut settings.
  2. Find uBlock Origin’s listed actions.
  3. Assign shortcuts only to actions you expect to use, then try them on a page where you can observe the effect.

Check the current uBlock Origin keyboard shortcut page if an action or label does not match your browser.

9. Back up before substantial customization

A dashboard backup can preserve changed settings, selected lists, custom list addresses, My filters, My rules, and Trusted sites. The project recommends regular backups, and creating one before a substantial change gives you a way to restore your setup if experiments go wrong.

  1. Open the uBlock Origin dashboard and go to Settings.
  2. Use the backup or export control to save your configuration somewhere you can find later.
  3. After making significant changes, create a fresh backup so it reflects the setup you want to keep.

Use the project’s settings page for the current backup controls and details about what is included.

10. Relax blocking step by step while diagnosing

The shortcut reference lists a Relax blocking mode action that decreases the blocking mode one step at a time through a configurable sequence. This can help identify whether a site problem is related to the current blocking mode, especially when paired with the logger. Treat each change as a diagnostic test rather than a permanent fix.

  1. Open the logger before repeating the failure.
  2. Use the relax-blocking action once, then reload and check the result.
  3. If needed, repeat one step at a time, observing which change affects the page.
  4. Restore your preferred blocking mode after diagnosis.

See the shortcut documentation for the action and configurable sequence.

Where to get uBlock Origin

Availability depends on browser and can change. The uBlock Origin project page states that its Chrome Web Store listing was removed on August 31, 2026, and lists distribution routes for Firefox, Edge, and Opera. It also says uBO works best on Firefox; the project noted that Microsoft Edge’s consumer transition away from Manifest V2 began in August 2026, with a goal of completing the transition by the end of 2026. Check the project’s current installation information for your browser before installing or troubleshooting an outdated listing. The project describes uBO as “a CPU and memory-efficient wide-spectrum content blocker for Chromium and Firefox”; that is the project’s own description, not an independent comparative benchmark.
