For a top ten that balances lasting quality, distinctive use of the DS’s dual screens and touchscreen, genre variety, and practical appeal to collectors, Chrono Trigger takes the top spot. This is an editorial ranking, not a universal consensus: critic scores, retrospective lists, sales figures, and personal preferences measure different things.
How this ranking works
The order weighs overall quality and lasting appeal, how meaningfully each game uses DS hardware, and the variety of experiences across the list. Practical availability matters to collectors, too, but prices and stock change, and no current market check establishes which cartridges are inexpensive or easy to find. Treat this as a guide to games worth seeking out, not a promise about what a physical copy should cost.

Other sources offer useful context rather than a definitive answer. Metacritic’s Nintendo DS page provides critic-score context and calls Chrono Trigger its 2008 DS Game of the Year. Retrospective selections from GamesRadar+ and Nintendo Life reflect editorial judgment. Nintendo’s historical sales figures show popularity, not quality.

Chrono Trigger
A strong first choice for a player looking for a substantial role-playing adventure. The DS edition’s dual-screen presentation and touchscreen functionality are specific features highlighted by Metacritic; the game earns the top place here through its lasting appeal as well as that platform-conscious presentation. The ranking is an editorial judgment, not a claim that one score or award settles the question.

Mario Kart DS
A natural pick for quick races and replayable competition. Nintendo’s 2013 best-seller document records 23.60 million copies, a historical sales figure that signals broad popularity, not a quality score or a current lifetime total.
-
New Super Mario Bros.
A clear recommendation for players who want a direct, familiar platforming adventure. It topped Nintendo’s 2013 DS best-seller document at 30.80 million copies. That number belongs to the document’s historical snapshot and should not be read as a current total.

Super Mario 64 DS
A notable portable take on a major 3D platforming game, and a useful choice for a collection that spans different kinds of DS play. Nintendo’s 2013 document records 9.95 million copies sold; that is a dated historical figure, not a current total or a ranking of quality.
What the sales list can—and cannot—tell you
Nintendo’s document, dated April 29, 2013, names these ten best-selling DS games: New Super Mario Bros., Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver, Animal Crossing: Wild World, Pokémon Black/White, Brain Age 2, Pokémon Diamond/Pearl, Brain Age, Mario Kart DS, Nintendogs, and Super Mario 64 DS. Its values are a historical snapshot, not up-to-date totals. The list helps identify widely purchased games, but sales do not show which title is best for a particular player or how well it uses the hardware.
The DS’s two screens and stylus create a useful way to compare games: does touch input or the second screen add something meaningful, or is it incidental? GamesRadar highlights creative use of touch controls and the stylus as one distinguishing strength of the library. The top ten above includes games with different kinds of appeal, from touchscreen interaction to racing and longer role-playing adventures; it is not a pure ranking of stylus use.
Buying physical DS games
If you are building a cartridge collection, verify the condition and region of a listing, whether the box and manual are included, and compatibility with the DS revision you own. The DS family includes the DS, DS Lite, DSi, and DSi XL, as noted by GameSpot. Prices, availability, and seller authenticity are not established here, so check current listings before buying. If a game relies on touch controls and your stylus is missing, a replacement stylus is an optional accessory; confirm that it fits your specific handheld revision.
GameSpot’s compatibility discussion reflects its article’s publication context. Do not treat it as confirmation of compatibility with later Nintendo platforms or services; check current platform documentation for any such question.
