Most home-office problems are easier to solve by adjusting the space and routine than by buying new equipment. Start with what you can reposition, simplify, or agree on with others in your home; add equipment only when those changes do not address the issue. These ten issues are a practical checklist, not a ranking of how often they occur. The right setup depends on the person and the home.
1. Your chair, desk, or posture does not fit
A workstation that forces you to reach, hunch, or bend your wrists can become uncomfortable over a workday. Adjust the chair and work surface so you can sit in a balanced position, with your wrists neutral while typing and your mouse close enough to use without straining. A kitchen table may be too high for comfortable keyboard positioning, even if it seems like a convenient desk.

Try changing the chair or keyboard position before buying anything. If the setup still does not fit, ask your employer whether an ergonomic assessment or suitable equipment is available. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) offers office chair guidance and telework guidance.

2. Your screen, keyboard, or mouse makes you reach or twist
Arrange frequently used items within easy reach and position the workstation around your body, rather than forcing yourself to adapt to a fixed arrangement. Leave room to change posture during the day. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) puts it plainly: “There is no single ‘correct’ posture or arrangement of components that will fit everyone.”

Move the keyboard and mouse closer if you reach for them; reposition the screen if you repeatedly turn or lean to see it. For more guidance, see OSHA’s Computer Workstations eTool and CCOHS’s basic requirements for sitting work.
3. Screen glare or eye discomfort is distracting
Try changing the light and screen positions first. Place the display at right angles to windows or other bright light sources, use blinds or diffused light when helpful, and aim task lamps so they do not reflect on the screen. A brighter lamp alone may make reflections worse rather than improve visibility.
Eye discomfort can have more than one cause, including viewing distance, posture, dry air, or vision issues. If it continues, seek advice from an eye-care or medical professional. CCOHS discusses possible causes in its guide to eye discomfort in the office; OSHA covers workstation lighting and environment.

- High-Resilience Molded Foam Seat – Won’t Flatten After 1 Year – Instead of budget foam that hardens and sags within months, the seat is built with high-density, high-resilience molded foam that bounces back day after day. It maintains its shape and cushioning far longer, preventing the “bottoming out” discomfort common at this price point
- Adjustable Lumbar, Not a Fixed Afterthought – Unlike flimsy plastic supports that crack or lose tension, this chair features a durable lumbar mechanism that adjusts depth to match your spine’s natural curve. Genuinely relieves lower back pressure during long sitting sessions
- Breathable Mesh Backrest – No Peeling, No Heat Buildup – Say goodbye to flaking faux leather. The high-tension mesh back promotes continuous airflow, keeping you cool in warm environments and eliminating the mess of peeling upholstery. Mesh holds up significantly better over time and looks professional years later
- Anti-Sink BIFMA Certified Gas Cylinder – A common failure in budget chairs: the pneumatic cylinder loses pressure and slowly sinks during use. Our Class 3 BIFMA-certified gas lift is built to hold its height reliably, so your chair stays exactly where you set it—year after year. No more sudden drops or mid-work adjustments
- Heavy-Duty Metal Core Base (330 lbs Capacity) – Thin plastic bases can crack under stress, especially near the cylinder hub. We use a reinforced nylon base with a metal core, providing the durability and peace of mind you need. Smooth-rolling, 360° silent casters glide across hardwood, tile, or carpet without scratching or catching
4. There is not enough useful task lighting
You should be able to see papers and screen content without excessive brightness or reflections. If you work with paper, try a task lamp positioned to illuminate the page without shining into your eyes or reflecting off the display. Adjust the lamp and monitor before deciding that you need a brighter bulb or another fixture.
CCOHS discusses lighting levels in its eye-discomfort guidance, but its 300–500 lux recommendation is not a universal requirement when a task lamp is in use. OSHA’s workstation environment guidance also addresses lighting and glare.
5. Noise or interruptions break your concentration
If practical, work in a separate area and agree with household members on periods when you need fewer interruptions. A clear schedule or signal can help others know when you are working, although it cannot eliminate every interruption.

6. Clutter or cables make the workspace awkward or unsafe
Keep frequently used items where you can reach them without repeatedly twisting or overreaching. Route cords away from walkways, and check that extension cords are in good condition. This can reduce both everyday strain and the chance of tripping over a cable.
Start by clearing the work surface and moving items you seldom use out of reach zones. CCOHS includes workspace organization and cord safety in its telework guidance.

7. Internet or work tools are missing or unreliable
Reliable access to the tools your job requires matters: CCOHS identifies internet and telephone access among possible telework needs, while CDC/NIOSH notes that missing tools and technical difficulties can be stressors when working from home.
Tell your employer which work tools or access are missing, and contact your service provider or the appropriate technical-support team for connection problems. The available guidance does not establish a universal internet-speed threshold or a particular router fix, so the right technical remedy depends on your work requirements and connection.
8. Temperature or ventilation makes the room uncomfortable
Choose a work area where you can manage ventilation and adjust the temperature comfortably. If the room feels stuffy or too hot or cold, consider whether another space or a change to the room’s airflow is practical.

CCOHS advises adequate ventilation and a comfortable, adjustable temperature, but there is no single ideal temperature established for every home office. See CCOHS telework guidance and CDC/NIOSH’s working-from-home guidance.
9. Work and home responsibilities compete
Family needs, changes in workload, uncertainty, missing tools, and technical problems can all contribute to stress while working from home, according to CDC/NIOSH. A designated work area and an agreed schedule can make the day easier to organize, but neither is a guaranteed solution to every source of stress.
Where possible, discuss competing demands and work expectations with the people involved, including your manager or household members. CDC/NIOSH describes home-working stressors in its working-from-home article; CCOHS also covers practical arrangements in its telework guidance.
10. Basic electrical and home safety gets overlooked
Comfort is only one part of a workable home office. Check that outlets are not overloaded, cords are safe and out of walkways, and equipment has adequate ventilation. Consider surge protection for electronic equipment. Also check smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms, exit routes, and the local codes that apply to your home.
CCOHS covers home-workspace safety in its telework guidance. For questions about electrical work or local requirements, consult an appropriately qualified professional or local authority.
