Apple TV 4K can do more than play shows: Siri can replay a missed line and switch on subtitles, picture calibration tools can help diagnose framing, and newer models can handle FaceTime and karaoke features. Here are ten documented features, with the requirements and settings to check before trying each one.

Fix dialogue and subtitles while you watch
1. Ask Siri, “What did she just say?”
If you miss a line, invoke Siri while a video is playing and say, “What did she just say?” Apple documents that Apple TV skips back 10 seconds and temporarily turns subtitles on. You can also ask Siri to “Turn on closed captioning,” “Turn on French subtitles,” or “Skip forward 90 seconds.” Siri features and language support vary by region. See Apple’s Siri playback commands.
2. Make dialogue clearer
During playback, open Audio Options and select Enhance Dialogue. Apple also documents Enhance More and an Isolate option that can be added through Accessibility settings. These modes make speech more prominent relative to other sounds, but stronger processing can change the original mix. Availability depends on tvOS and the audio setup; Apple’s update notes specify support for HomePod (2nd generation) with Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later). 3. Reduce the impact of loud effects
For late-night viewing, try Reduce Loud Sounds in Audio Options during playback. It reduces dynamic range, lowering the relative impact of loud music and effects. Results can vary by program and audio equipment, so it is an option to test rather than a promise that every scene will sound the same. Apple describes the setting in its audio settings guide.

4. Use Color Balance to tune the image
On Apple TV, go to Settings > Video and Audio > Calibration > Color Balance, then follow the prompts with an iPhone that has Face ID and runs iOS 14.5 or later. The iPhone measures a test pattern and helps Apple TV adjust its output. This is a calibration aid, not a substitute for professional display calibration. See Apple’s calibration instructions.

5. Check for cropped or stretched edges
In the same Settings > Video and Audio > Calibration area, use Zoom and Overscan to display a reference image. It can help you see whether the television is cropping the picture or stretching it. If the framing is wrong, you may need to adjust the TV’s own picture or overscan settings; Apple TV’s reference image does not necessarily make that correction for every display. Use Apple TV for calls and shared viewing
6. Make a FaceTime call on the TV
FaceTime is available on Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later) using Continuity Camera with a compatible iPhone or iPad. Apple documents features including Center Stage framing, gesture-triggered reactions, and Split View, which lets you combine a call with SharePlay viewing. You need to set up a compatible companion device; the feature is not available on every Apple TV model. Check the hardware and software requirements in Apple’s tvOS update history.

7. Locate a nearby Siri Remote with your iPhone
If you have a Siri Remote (2nd generation or later), use the Apple TV Remote in Control Centre on iPhone to locate a nearby remote. Apple introduced this capability in its tvOS 17 notes; it is not documented for every remote generation. See Apple’s software update history.
8. Look up details about an Apple Original with InSight
While an Apple TV+ film or show is playing, swipe down to view InSight information about actors or music. InSight requires an Apple TV+ subscription, and it is designed for supported Apple Originals rather than every title in the TV app. See Apple’s tvOS update notes.

Make Apple TV part of your music and home display
9. Use Memories or Portraits as a screen saver
Apple’s release notes document Memories and Portraits screen-saver options on Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later). The available choices depend on the current tvOS version and, for photo-based displays, your photo setup. See Apple’s software update history.
10. Sing into your iPhone with Apple Music Sing
Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) can use an iPhone running iOS 26 or later as a handheld microphone for Apple Music Sing. Friends can join to queue songs and trigger screen effects. This is a Music Sing feature, so access depends on the supported device and software combination, the available song catalog, Apple Music service access, and regional availability.
