Most of the controls that make Audible easier to live with sit in the app’s player and Library, and several are easy to miss. These ten cover per-title playback speed, the sleep timer, clips and bookmarks, the Play Next queue, recommendation toggles, Library lists, listening in a browser, companion PDFs, and the limits on returns and the Amazon Music Unlimited audiobook benefit.
The help pages behind these steps are Audible’s US help pages, dated August and September 2026. Menus, labels, and eligibility can change, so if a label on your screen differs from the one below, check Audible’s current help center before relying on it.

Playback: speed and the sleep timer
1. Set narration speed title by title
Open a title’s player and choose Speed to change how fast that book plays. Audible says each title keeps its own speed across the apps you use, so a slow nonfiction audiobook does not force your fiction title to change with it.

A separate default speed lives in Player settings, and it can differ from device to device. Audible’s stated default is 1.0x (Audible Help, “Set narration speed,” September 3, 2026). Faster is not automatically better. Narrators vary in pace and clarity, and dense nonfiction often works better at a slower setting. Adjust per title rather than raising your default across the board.

2. Use the timer as a sleep timer
While a title is playing, choose a preset or create a custom timer and save it for reuse. The timer exists only in the Audible app, not in the browser player.
When the timer runs out, Audible alerts you. If shake-to-extend is enabled, shaking the phone within 30 seconds after the audio begins to fade adds the same amount of time again. Audible’s help page describes the purpose plainly: “The Audible timer allows you to control when your audiobook will stop playing so you never lose your place again” (Audible Help, “Use timer,” September 3, 2026).

Saving your place and your favorite passages
3. Save a passage with Clips & Notes
Tap +Clip in the app to save a passage. The clip starts with 30 seconds, and you can edit the range, add a note, replay only that clip, or jump back to where it sits in the book. Audible says saved clips run from 5 to 44 seconds (Audible Help, “Manage clips & notes,” September 9, 2026). Saving a clip also adds a bookmark at that point. Clips are app-only.

4. Bookmark a return point
Bookmarks are the lighter tool. Select a saved bookmark to resume at that position, and add a note to it if you want a reminder of why you marked it. Audible documents bookmarks in both the app and the Cloud Player, so they are the one saving tool that works in a browser. Clips, by contrast, are app-only.

Controlling what plays next
5. Build a Play Next queue
Add titles from your Library with the More menu, or press and hold a title. To manage the queue, open the Chapters menu in the player. From there you can move a queued title up or down, send it to the top, or remove it. Queue management is app-only.
6. Turn off automatic recommendations if you want uninterrupted listening
Go to Profile > Settings > Player > Continuous listening. Two toggles control what follows your current title: Up next titles and Recommended titles. Recommended previews play only when nothing else is queued. If you want a title to end and nothing new to start, turn off Recommended titles, and keep Up next titles on if you rely on your queue (Audible Help, “Manage your auto-play settings,” September 2026).

Organizing your Library
7. Use lists to group titles
Audible supports two kinds of lists. Personal lists are ones you build yourself, and public curated collections come from authors, narrators, podcast hosts, and Audible editors. You can create personal lists in the app or on the desktop website, but the mobile website does not currently support creating them. Lists work well for grouping titles by mood, topic, or a planned listening schedule, such as a commute list separate from a weekend list (Audible Help, “Manage your Lists,” September 2026).

Listening beyond the app
8. Listen from a computer browser
Audible’s Cloud Player streams audiobooks in current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge without installing software. Your progress carries across devices, which Audible describes as: “Pick up right where you left off across all your devices” (Audible Help, “Listen on a browser,” August 27, 2026). Streaming needs an internet connection. If you need a title offline, follow Audible’s download instructions rather than assuming the browser player will keep it available.

9. Look for a companion PDF
Audible’s player help includes an entry titled “View accompanying PDF,” which confirms that some titles come with companion material such as notes or reference pages. Not every audiobook has one, so do not expect it everywhere. The steps to open the PDF are not covered in this guide. For a specific title, check the player help entry for that book.
Returns and the Music Unlimited benefit
10. Know the limits of returns and the monthly Music benefit
These two arrangements are different things, and it helps to keep them apart.

The return window is a fixed 365 days for eligible credit-purchased titles, but eligibility is not automatic. Audible can restrict the option, and where a title was bought changes what applies. If you want to return a title, start on the Audible website, not in the app. The Music benefit is a separate monthly listening perk. Its one-audiobook allowance does not create a return right or a credit, and it is only available through the plans described above in the US help page.
