For most Mac users, Commander One is the best all-round Finder upgrade: it adds persistent dual panes and, in its Pro edition, remote and cloud connections. ForkLift is the more Mac-like premium choice, Nimble Commander suits keyboard-heavy users, fman is useful across macOS, Windows and Linux, and Transmit is better understood as a remote-transfer client than a Finder replacement.
None of these apps completely removes Finder. macOS still uses Finder for the desktop, some file-selection dialogs and system workflows. Third-party managers complement Finder rather than replacing every part of it. Finder remains part of macOS even when another manager handles your daily file work.
What Finder already does well
Finder is still the right choice for many people. It handles opening, copying, moving, renaming, tagging, previewing and deleting files; integrates with Quick Look, Spotlight, iCloud Drive and external drives; and provides the standard Apple interface used by macOS applications.

- No persistent two-pane view, so copying between folders often means juggling windows.

Do not assume those details describe the current product: verify whether ForkLift 4 has replaced it, which macOS releases are supported, and whether the current license is a one-time purchase or subscription at BinaryNights.
3. Nimble Commander: keyboard-first navigation
Nimble Commander uses a traditional two-panel model with tabs and windows, batch renaming, file viewing and archive handling. It is a natural fit for technically inclined users who prefer keyboard commands and function-key conventions over Finder-style drag and drop.

7. Path Finder: powerful, but check its current status
The source description credits Path Finder with dual panes, hidden-file controls, bookmarks, a Drop Stack for collecting files before moving or copying, interface customization and cloud-storage support. A current secondary comparison raises questions about whether it remains actively supported. Check Cocoatech’s current site, download page and release notes before installing it on a new macOS release.
8. Transmit: best when the destination is a server
Transmit is primarily a remote file-transfer and server-management tool. It is appropriate for FTP, SFTP, WebDAV and related workflows, including moving files between a Mac and hosted infrastructure. 10. TotalFinder and XtraFinder: only for users who want to keep Finder

How to choose
- Need two folders visible? Select a genuine dual-pane manager.
- Need servers? Confirm the exact protocols—FTP, SFTP, FTPS, SMB, WebDAV or S3—and whether they require a paid edition.
- Need cloud storage? Check whether the app connects directly, mounts a provider, uses WebDAV or depends on a separate sync client.
- Prefer the keyboard? Look for customizable shortcuts, a command palette or function-key commands.
- Perform risky batch work? Verify rename, synchronization, archive, conflict, retry, pause and undo behavior.

Permissions, remote files and safe switching

What is the best free Finder alternative?
There is no single verified winner. Nimble Commander, fman and the free edition of Commander One are candidates, but confirm exactly which features, builds and licenses are free before installing.
