On a personally owned Chromebook, sign in with the owner account and open Settings → Privacy and security → Manage other people. Turn on Guest browsing, sign out, then select Browse as Guest on the sign-in screen. School- and work-managed Chromebooks may require an administrator to enable the feature.

What Chromebook Guest Mode does

ChromeOS Guest Mode provides a temporary session without signing in to a Google Account or opening an existing Chromebook profile. It is useful when lending a Chromebook, borrowing one briefly, or using a shared device. Google describes the feature at its Chromebook Guest browsing guide.

Do not confuse this with a Guest window in desktop Chrome on Windows, macOS, or Linux. On a Chromebook, use the ChromeOS Browse as Guest option.

Before enabling it

  • You normally need to be signed in to the Chromebook’s owner account.
  • A school- or employer-managed Chromebook may have guest access disabled by policy.
  • Guest sessions are disposable: files, downloads, cookies, website data, browsing activity, and preferences are removed when the session ends.

Enable Guest browsing on a personal Chromebook

  1. If you are currently in a guest session, select the time in the lower-right corner and choose Exit guest.
  2. Sign in with the Chromebook owner account.
  3. Select the time in the lower-right corner, then select Settings.
  4. Under Privacy and security, select Manage other people.
  5. Turn on Guest browsing.
  6. Sign out of ChromeOS.
  7. At the sign-in screen, select Browse as Guest.

ChromeOS releases and language settings can show slightly different labels, such as Manage users, but the setting is the Guest browsing switch. See Google’s current procedure at support.google.com/chromebook/answer/1057090.

Start a guest session

From the sign-in screen

  1. Turn on the Chromebook or sign out until the sign-in screen appears.
  2. Select Browse as Guest at the bottom of the screen.

After signing in normally

  1. Select the time in the lower-right corner.
  2. Select Power.
  3. Select Sign out.
  4. Select Browse as Guest.

These sign-in and sign-out steps are documented by Google at support.google.com/chromebook/answer/15470856.

What Guest Mode allows and removes

Item Guest-session behavior
Google Account sign-in Not required for the Chromebook session
Existing Chromebook profiles Not accessible from the guest session
Play Store Unavailable
Installing apps Not available in Guest Mode
Files and downloads Deleted when the guest session ends
Cookies, website data, and browsing activity Deleted when the session ends
Saved preferences Not retained for the next guest session
Some account-dependent or built-in features May require sign-in or be unavailable, including some ChromeOS AI features

Download or transfer anything you need before leaving; do not assume items in the Downloads folder will survive. The local-data behavior and feature limits are described in Google’s Guest browsing documentation.

Exit Guest Mode safely

  1. Select the time in the lower-right corner.
  2. Select Exit guest.

Exiting ends the temporary session and removes its local files, downloads, cookies, website data, and browsing activity. It does not erase records held by websites, networks, or online services.

If “Browse as Guest” is missing

Check the owner account

On a personal Chromebook, sign in as the owner and verify Settings → Privacy and security → Manage other people → Guest browsing. A regular user generally cannot change the owner’s setting.

Check whether the Chromebook is managed

Schools and employers can disable guest access centrally. If the setting is locked, unavailable, or keeps reverting, contact the administrator. Do not try to bypass management with a powerwash, developer mode, or unofficial commands.

When sign-in itself fails

Guest Mode can provide temporary access only if Browse as Guest is available; it is not a fix for a damaged account or hardware problem. If both sign-in and guest access fail, use Google’s Chromebook support guidance or contact the device administrator.

Guest Mode, Incognito, or another user?

Option Best for What persists Important limitation
Guest Mode Temporary use without an account Nothing from the guest session after exit No Play Store or app installation; local deletion is not online anonymity
Incognito A temporary browser window inside your existing profile Downloaded files and saved bookmarks remain Runs under the signed-in Chromebook account and does not hide activity from websites or networks
Another Chromebook user Family members or repeat users That user’s files, settings, apps, and account sync persist The profile remains on the device and may be restricted by the owner or administrator

Incognito removes local browsing history, cookies, and site data after all Incognito windows close, but it is not the same as ChromeOS Guest Mode. Google’s comparison is at support.google.com/chromebook/answer/95464.

Privacy and security limits

Guest Mode mainly prevents the Chromebook from retaining the session’s local data after exit. It is not a VPN, anonymous browsing system, or guarantee that no copy of activity exists elsewhere.

Administrator controls for managed Chromebooks

For an organization-managed device, an administrator controls the ChromeOS guest policy rather than the local user. In Google Admin Console, the documented policy is DeviceGuestModeEnabled, under a path described as Devices → Chrome → Settings → Device settings → Sign-in settings → Guest mode → Allow guest mode. Console labels and policy propagation can change, and a sign-out or restart may be needed before a change appears.

Administrators need the appropriate device-management privileges. Google’s policy documentation is at support.google.com/chrome/a/answer/9302896; broader managed-device guidance is available at support.google.com/chrome/a/answer/9773702 and support.google.com/chrome/a/answer/2657289.
