Microsoft Clarity is the clearest free starting point, while Mouseflow is positioned for form and funnel diagnosis, Crazy Egg for classic conversion-rate-optimization features, and Contentsquare for enterprise journey analysis. The right choice depends on what you need to learn after you spot a pattern: recordings, surveys, funnels, or experiments.

What heatmap software can—and cannot—tell you
Heatmaps aggregate activity and display it as an overlay on a page. They help reveal where visitors interact and how far they scroll, but they do not explain a visitor’s motive or prove that a page change caused better business results.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Click or tap maps show where visitors interact with page elements.
- Scroll maps indicate how far down a page visitors reach.
- Movement maps visualize cursor movement; this is a behavioral signal, not a direct measure of attention.
- Area or attention views summarize activity or time in selected page zones.
A hotspot or apparent dead zone is a hypothesis to investigate, not a verdict. Use relevant audience and device comparisons, then add recordings, funnel or form analysis, feedback, or an experiment when the question calls for it. Contentsquare likewise describes heatmaps as most useful alongside replay and funnel analysis in its heatmap tool guide; Microsoft’s heatmap documentation describes its available map types.

10 heatmap tools and their best-fit workflows

1. Microsoft Clarity — free starting point
Best for: Teams that want heatmaps and recordings without a stated traffic limit on the vendor’s free offer.
Microsoft says Clarity is free and lists unlimited heatmaps, websites, and team members, as well as recordings, segmentation, and heatmap summaries. Its heatmap documentation describes click, scroll, area, and conversion maps; Microsoft says conversion heatmaps are for Shopify. These are Microsoft’s own service and feature claims, so review the current plan and terms directly.
Pros: A no-cost entry point, with maps and recordings together according to Microsoft’s pricing page. Cons: The cited pages do not establish that Clarity includes the form-analysis, experimentation, or enterprise journey capabilities some teams may need.

2. Contentsquare — enterprise journey and revenue analysis
Best for: Larger organizations connecting observed behavior with customer journeys and business outcomes.

10. Smartlook — check lifecycle status before evaluating
Best for: Existing users assessing continuity or teams researching alternatives, after confirming the product’s present availability with an official notice.
A third-party comparison checked in July 2026 reports that new Smartlook subscriptions ended May 31, 2026, and that decommissioning was planned for September 30, 2027, with migration to Splunk’s Digital Experience Analytics. Those are dated third-party claims, not verified here against an official Cisco or Smartlook announcement. Do not treat them as a current lifecycle guarantee; confirm directly before making a procurement or migration decision.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose a heatmap tool
Start with the decision you need to make, not the number of map types in a feature list.
- Define the question. Choose click or tap maps for interaction locations, scroll maps for page reach, and area or attention views for regional summaries.
- Identify the missing context. If the map shows a pattern but not its likely cause, prioritize replay or audience filters. If the problem concerns form completion or a multi-step path, look for form analytics or funnel analysis.
- Decide how you will validate a change. When you need to know whether a redesign improved an outcome, look for an experimentation workflow or a way to connect the product to one. A heatmap alone is observational, not causal evidence.
- Check operational fit. Confirm the current installation requirements, integrations, privacy and consent terms, data retention, access controls, supported page types, and mobile coverage with the vendor. The cited comparisons do not establish these details consistently across all ten products.
- Compare the actual plan, not just the headline offer. Check included traffic or sessions, retention, billing cadence, overages, currency, and whether pricing is self-serve or quote-based. A free label or an entry price is not enough to establish the cost of your expected use.
What to know about pricing and comparison claims
Do not treat a mid-2026 price snapshot as an October 2026 quote. Humblytics says its comparison was published June 25, 2026 and prices were checked in June; HeatMapX says it checked official prices July 7, 2026. Both comparisons are vendor-authored and include the publisher’s own product. Contentsquare’s category guide is also vendor-authored. Their rankings and descriptions are useful for discovering options, but they are not independent product tests.
The strongest specific free-plan claim in the cited material is Microsoft’s: its pricing page says Clarity is free and claims no traffic limits and unlimited heatmaps, websites, and team members. Treat that as Microsoft’s stated offer, not a guarantee that every capability or use case is unlimited or that the terms will never change. Check the live pricing and service terms for your region before adopting it.
Vendor claims about feature sets and positioning should be treated the same way: they describe what a provider says its product is suited to, not measured performance against every alternative. No market-wide adoption or outcome statistic in the cited material establishes that one product is objectively best.
Which tool should you shortlist?
- For a free place to start: Microsoft Clarity, based on Microsoft’s stated free offer.
- For form and funnel analysis: Mouseflow, based on the cited comparison’s feature description.
- For classic CRO maps and testing: Crazy Egg, based on the cited comparison’s positioning.
- For enterprise journey analysis: Contentsquare, based on its own category guide.
- For surveys and feedback alongside maps: Hotjar, after checking current product packaging.
These are use-case shortlists, not independent rankings. Compare the workflows and current terms that matter to your site before choosing.
