They are related parts of the bandwidth picture—not rival versions of the same technology. IEEE’s 1.6 Tb/s work remains a draft project in the cited status, and an announced multi-vendor demonstration shows interoperability activity, not broad commercial migration.
What 1.6T Ethernet means—and what it does not
“1.6T” refers to a nominal data rate of 1.6 terabits per second. IEEE project P802.3dj is a draft amendment covering Ethernet MAC parameters for 1.6 Tb/s and physical-layer and management parameters for 200, 400, 800, and 1.6 Tb/s operation. The IEEE project page describes work in progress; it does not identify P802.3dj as a published final amendment. IEEE P802.3dj project

This project should not be confused with the already-published base Ethernet standard. A draft defines work under development; it is not by itself proof that products are broadly available or deployed. Standards status can change, so the cited project page is the relevant reference for its current stage.

Why the roadmap focuses on bandwidth and efficiency
The Ethernet Alliance’s December 9, 2025 announcement of its 2026 Ethernet Roadmap highlights 1.6 Tb/s connectivity, Linear Pluggable Optics (LPO), copper and fiber options, and energy-efficiency measures for AI, cloud, enterprise, and other networking contexts. It frames bandwidth per watt, optics, cooling, and power management as design priorities—not as quantified savings or assurances that every roadmap feature is already commercially deployed. That distinction matters for AI infrastructure. Higher link capacity can be one response to growing network demand, but a roadmap priority does not establish how much faster a particular AI workload will run, how much power a specific design will use, or which implementation is best.
How coherent optics fit into the network
Coherent optics describe optical signaling and transport approaches; they are not a single Ethernet speed. OIF’s 2025 project overview groups coherent work by reach and transport role. Its categories include coherent point-to-point links below 10 km, coherent dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) above 80 km, and multi-span coherent DWDM below 1,000 km. These descriptions identify project categories, not interchangeable Ethernet PHY names. OIF 2025 project overview

| OIF project category | Reach and role stated by OIF | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| 800LR and 1600LR | Coherent point-to-point below 10 km | Shorter-reach point-to-point optical links |
| 400ZR, 800ZR, and 1600ZR | Coherent DWDM above 80 km | Longer-reach DWDM transport |
| 1600ZR+ | Multi-span coherent DWDM below 1,000 km | Multi-span transport rather than a short data-center link |
The listed reaches describe OIF project categories, not a guarantee that every implementation supports every distance in every deployment. When comparing coherent options, first identify the segment to be connected and its reach requirement; the label alone does not establish a complete system design.

OIF also identifies energy-efficient interfaces for AI/ML and data centers, including work on CEI electrical building blocks and other electro-optical interfaces. That makes the host electrical interface and optical implementation part of a system-level bandwidth and energy discussion. The overview does not quantify the energy advantage of a particular architecture.

What the ECOC 2026 demonstration establishes
In an announcement dated September 9, 2026, the Ethernet Alliance described a multi-vendor demonstration scheduled for ECOC 2026, September 21–23 in Malaga, Spain. The announced setup includes 1.6T optical modules operating at 224G per lane alongside 112G-per-lane copper interconnects. These are interface rates in the planned demonstration, not measured AI-workload results or evidence that production networks have generally migrated to 1.6T. Ethernet Alliance ECOC 2026 demonstration announcement
The announcement quotes Linden Willis-Kilgore, technical marketing manager, high speed products group, at Amphenol describing the coexistence of next-generation optics and deployed copper infrastructure. That is a vendor representative’s statement about the announced demonstration, not an independent assessment of general deployment or performance. How to compare approaches for an AI network
Ethernet interfaces and coherent transport solve related but different design problems. A useful comparison starts with the network segment and the maturity of the evidence, rather than treating “Ethernet” and “coherent” as opposing choices.

- Standards maturity: distinguish a published specification from an active draft, an industry roadmap, and a demonstration. P802.3dj is identified as a draft in the cited IEEE project information.
- Reach and role: separate short-reach data-center links from longer coherent DWDM transport. The OIF categories specify different reach bands and transport contexts.
- Interface and integration: check lane rate, host/module electrical interface, and the implementation context, including whether the design uses pluggable optics. The ECOC announcement’s lane rates describe its demonstration, not every 1.6T implementation.
- Interoperability evidence: treat an announced multi-vendor demonstration as evidence of a planned interoperability effort, not proof of broad production deployment.
- Power and cooling: account for these as design constraints. The cited roadmap identifies them as priorities but gives no comparative wattage or measured savings for competing architectures.
The available standards and industry materials do not establish one architecture as best for every AI network. The appropriate choice depends on the required link capacity, reach, interfaces, integration constraints, and system-level power and cooling budget.
