That makes it a reasonable comparison with HITMAN World of Assassination, but the available evidence supports a clearer description of First Light than a detailed, mechanic-by-mechanic contrast with Hitman. The practical distinction is the experience each game is framed to deliver: Bond-story momentum and improvisation in First Light, versus Hitman as the alternative for players specifically seeking that series’ established style of stealth play.
What kind of game is 007 First Light?
IO Interactive describes 007 First Light as a third-person action-adventure and an original, reimagined James Bond origin story. Its official framing is not simply “Hitman with a Bond skin”: the game follows Bond’s early story, with cinematic action and stealth as parts of a broader spy adventure. IO Interactive’s announcement and gameplay reveal establish that genre and story framing.

How First Light says it handles stealth and action
IOI calls its design philosophy the “Creative Approach”: players can complete missions through stealth, direct action, or a blend. In its December 3, 2025 developer diary, the studio said the approach is meant to let players complete missions in their own style. That is a statement of design intent, not proof that every encounter offers every option. The Beyond the Light Episode 1 diary is the source for that framing.

IOI’s gameplay material names practical spy actions including hacking, cutting locks, creating distractions, and incapacitating targets. These support a flexible approach to situations rather than establishing that the game is a fully open sandbox. A PlayStation Blog hands-on preview, published April 30, 2026, also describes improvisation and multiple approaches in the preview missions. Where the comparison with Hitman is useful—and where it stops
The comparison is useful if you are asking whether First Light offers stealth alongside action, or whether it is presented as a mission-planning sandbox. The evidence supports the first point: IOI explicitly describes stealth, direct action, and a combination of the two. It also supports flexible approaches in the previewed situations. It does not establish that every mission is open-ended, or provide enough detail to make a sourced, system-by-system account of how Hitman’s stealth rules work.
IOI has discussed the distinction in a Game Informer interview with gameplay director Andreas Krogh, and the interview’s title explicitly frames the question as what differs between the games. However, the available excerpt does not give enough detail to attribute a specific mechanical contrast to Krogh. See the Game Informer interview. IOI’s HITMAN World of Assassination product information is a starting point for the other game, but a precise comparison of disguises, target routines, replay loops, map scale, or scoring needs more detailed official documentation than is established here.

Which game should you play?
- Choose 007 First Light if you want a story-led Bond adventure that officially supports stealth, direct action, or a mix, with spy tools that can enable improvisation.
- Choose HITMAN World of Assassination if you are looking for Hitman specifically. First Light’s stated flexibility is not enough evidence to promise the same mission structure or stealth mechanics.
- Consider both if you like stealth but also want cinematic action and a Bond origin story. Treat them as related in broad interest, not interchangeable games.
These recommendations concern the games’ stated framing and the available First Light preview evidence; they are not based on a direct hands-on comparison. Confirm current platform availability, editions, and prices on official storefronts before buying, since announcement-era platform and release details do not by themselves establish present availability.
