Your Buddy does not have to be fed, at Best Buddy status, or visibly walking on the map for this mechanic to work.
A distinctive Buddy can help you notice a disguised spawn, but Buddy choice does not improve Zorua’s shiny odds. The copied appearance and Zorua’s actual shiny status are separate; catching the Pokémon is the only way to find out whether that Zorua is shiny.

How Zorua’s disguise works
Wild Zorua uses a special disguise mechanic in Pokémon GO. Instead of appearing as Zorua on the map, it copies the appearance of the Trainer’s current Buddy Pokémon. A Zorua therefore may look like an ordinary species, a Legendary, a costumed Pokémon, or another unusual Buddy until the encounter is resolved.

The important distinction is that this is a Pokémon GO mechanic, not a direct copy of the Illusion ability from the main-series games. In Pokémon GO, the appearance is tied to the Buddy selected in the Buddy system. The specialist guide from Pokémon GO Hub, updated August 31, 2026, states that the same behavior applies to Hisuian Zorua.

What you see on the map
The disguised spawn appears on the overworld map using the current Buddy’s appearance. That visual copy can make the spawn look like a second Buddy or like a species that would not normally be expected in the immediate area. The game does not label the map spawn as Zorua before you catch it.
What happens after you tap it
Tapping the spawn starts a normal catch encounter. Zorua does not immediately revert to its own model when the encounter opens; the disguise remains in place during the encounter. After the Pokémon is captured, the “Oh?” reveal animation shows that the Pokémon was Zorua.
This sequence matters when you are deciding whether a surprising spawn is worth catching. The encounter itself does not provide a reliable visual confirmation that you have found Zorua. The reveal comes after a successful capture.

No. The Buddy only needs to be the Pokémon currently selected in the Buddy system. It does not need to be fed, have an active walking session, or be visibly beside the Trainer on the map. Changing the active Buddy changes the appearance Zorua will copy for subsequent disguised spawns.
What is required
- Have a Pokémon selected as your current Buddy.
- Find a wild spawn that may be using the Buddy’s appearance.
- Tap the spawn and complete the catch encounter.
What is not required
- The Buddy does not need to be on the map beside your avatar.
- The Buddy does not need to be fed immediately before the spawn appears.
- The Buddy does not need to be shiny, Shadow, Legendary, Mythical, costumed, or rare.
These requirements make Zorua hunting simpler than some players assume: the relevant setting is the identity of the current Buddy, not its activity state.

How to use a Buddy to make Zorua easier to recognize
Choosing a visually distinctive Buddy is a recognition strategy. It does not create Zorua encounters and does not alter the chance that a Zorua will be shiny. Its purpose is to make a copied appearance stand out from ordinary local spawns.
Good choices for visual recognition
The Pokémon GO Hub guide suggests considering a shiny, Shadow, Legendary, Mythical, rare-costume, or large Pokémon. These choices are useful because an unusual appearance is easier to notice when it appears unexpectedly among nearby spawns.

These are practical visual cues, not official guarantees that every unusual duplicate is Zorua. A rare-looking spawn can still be the Pokémon it appears to be, and a Zorua copied from an ordinary-looking Buddy can be easy to overlook.
A simple recognition routine
- Before exploring, select a Buddy whose appearance you can identify quickly.
- Watch for a nearby spawn that matches that Buddy in an unexpected way.
- Tap the suspicious spawn rather than relying on the map model alone.
- Catch it and wait for the “Oh?” reveal before deciding whether it was Zorua.
Does a Shiny Buddy increase the Shiny Zorua rate?
No. A shiny Buddy can make the disguise easier to notice, but there is no evidence that selecting one increases the probability of a shiny Zorua. The Buddy’s shiny status affects the copied appearance only; it does not transfer a shiny guarantee to the disguised Pokémon.
The reverse is also important: a Zorua copied from an ordinary-looking Buddy can still be shiny. You cannot determine Zorua’s shiny status from whether the disguise looks shiny, normal, Shadow, or otherwise unusual.

Why the disguise cannot answer the shiny question
The copied model and the captured Pokémon’s actual status are separate pieces of information. A shiny Buddy can be copied by a non-shiny Zorua, while a non-shiny Buddy can be copied by a shiny Zorua. The visual disguise therefore works as an identification clue, not as a shiny detector.
When you can check
Catch the spawn. The post-capture “Oh?” reveal is the point at which the game identifies the disguised Pokémon as Zorua. Do not discard a suspicious spawn simply because the copied appearance is ordinary, and do not assume a shiny-looking disguise is a shiny result.
No numerical Zorua shiny-rate percentage is established in the cited material. Treat claims of a specific percentage as unverified unless an authoritative, current Pokémon GO source publishes it for the relevant encounter or event.
Regular Zorua and Hisuian Zorua
Both regular Zorua and Hisuian Zorua can use the Buddy-based disguise mechanic. The guide specifically includes Hisuian Zorua in the explanation, so the same practical approach applies: identify the current Buddy, watch for a matching or suspicious spawn, enter the encounter, and catch it to reveal the Pokémon.
The disguise does not tell you which Zorua form you will receive. The appearance on the map is borrowed from the Buddy, not displayed as a reliable preview of regular versus Hisuian Zorua. The form is established by the encounter and capture result.

Evolution cost
Regular Zorua and Hisuian Zorua each evolve using 50 Zorua Candy. The official Hisui event information states: “You can use 50 Zorua Candy to evolve Hisuian Zorua into Hisuian Zoroark.” Make sure the candy you are collecting is Zorua Candy and not a different species’ candy before planning an evolution.

What to do when a suspected Zorua is not obvious
The spawn looks completely ordinary
Catch it anyway if you are checking for Zorua. An ordinary-looking Buddy can produce a disguise that blends into the local map, and the copied appearance does not rule out Zorua or a shiny result.
The spawn resembles your shiny Buddy
Do not treat the shiny appearance as proof of a shiny Zorua. Enter the encounter and complete the catch. The shiny check belongs to the captured Pokémon, not to the Buddy model used for the disguise.
The Buddy is not visible beside your Trainer
That does not invalidate the disguise. The Buddy does not have to be walking on the map or visibly active next to the avatar. Confirm which Pokémon is selected as the current Buddy, then continue checking suspicious spawns.
You changed Buddies and the appearance seems inconsistent
Verify the current Buddy selection in the Buddy interface. Zorua copies the current Buddy, so a recently changed selection can alter which appearance you should watch for. Use the newly selected Buddy as your visual reference for later encounters.
You expect every duplicate to be Zorua
Use the Buddy appearance as a clue, not a guarantee. The recognition advice is intended to make a possible disguise conspicuous; it is not an official rule that every matching or unusual spawn is Zorua. Catching remains the confirmation step.
Event dates and bonuses: what is no longer active
The official October 2026 Community Day announcement listed increased Zorua appearances on October 10, 2026, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. local time, along with a higher shiny chance and lure-related bonuses. As of October 16, 2026, that event window has passed, so those bonuses should not be treated as active.
The same announcement said that evolving Zorua during the event or within four hours afterward produced a Zoroark that knew Sucker Punch. That four-hour evolution window has also ended. The standard Buddy disguise mechanic and the 50-Candy evolution requirement are separate from those dated event bonuses.
A practical checklist for catching disguised Zorua
- Set a recognizable Buddy: A shiny, Shadow, Legendary, Mythical, rare-costume, or large Pokémon can make a copied spawn easier to notice.
- Remember the purpose: The unusual Buddy is a visual aid only; it does not improve shiny odds.
- Check the active selection: The Buddy must be selected, but it does not need to be fed or walking.
- Tap suspicious spawns: The map appearance is not enough to confirm Zorua.
- Complete the catch: The disguise remains through the encounter.
- Watch the reveal: The “Oh?” animation identifies Zorua after capture.
- Check shiny status only after capture: Neither a shiny-looking nor ordinary-looking disguise predicts the result.
- Save candy deliberately: Both regular and Hisuian Zorua require 50 Zorua Candy to evolve.
