Zoroark vs. Hisuian Zoroark in Pokémon GO PvP: Which One Should You Use?

If you are choosing only between the two forms, Hisuian Zoroark is usually the more interesting PvP project. Its Normal/Ghost typing gives it a defensive profile ordinary Zoroark does not have, and current Great League and Ultra League guidance supports a Shadow Claw, Swift and Shadow Ball set. That does not make it a general-purpose meta staple: its available rankings are mid-pack snapshots, while a recent analysis describes ordinary Zoroark as exceptionally fragile. Choose the form that fills a specific team or cup role, and check the current format before spending Stardust or Elite TMs.

The short answer: choose Hisuian Zoroark for a deliberate role

Ordinary Zoroark is a pure Dark-type Pokémon. Hisuian Zoroark is Normal/Ghost. That single difference changes which attacks each form can absorb, which opponents can pressure it safely, and how useful it is when shields are up or down.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Between the two, Hisuian Zoroark is generally the better starting point for a PvP build because its resistances can create switch opportunities that ordinary Zoroark cannot. The recommended set in current league guidance is Shadow Claw, Swift and Shadow Ball for both Great and Ultra League.

Still, neither form should be treated as an automatic open-league investment. Hisuian Zoroark’s displayed rankings are 440th of 1,143 eligible Pokémon in Great League and 386th of 841 in Ultra League in the accessed database snapshot. Ordinary Zoroark’s October 9, 2026 analysis is substantially harsher, calling it too fragile for strong open-league play. Those are simulator and database snapshots, not permanent tier labels or official win-rate records.

Use the following rule: build Hisuian Zoroark when its Normal/Ghost resistances solve a team problem or a restricted cup rewards them. Build ordinary Zoroark only for a clearly identified matchup, cup, or collection goal rather than assuming a new fast move fixes its lack of bulk.

Typing is the deciding difference

Factor Ordinary Zoroark Hisuian Zoroark
Type Dark Normal/Ghost
Listed weaknesses Bug, Fighting and Fairy, according to the official Pokédex typing entry Dark on the Pokémon GO defensive chart cited by the current guide
Listed resistances Not specified in the cited comparison Bug, Fighting, Ghost and Poison; the chart lists a double resistance to Normal
Practical identity Offensive Dark attacker with very little room for mistakes Specialist switch or closer that can exploit several resisted attack types

Typing does not guarantee a win. A resistance only reduces incoming damage; it does not compensate for poor energy timing, a bad shield position, or a hard counter. It does, however, determine whether a Pokémon can safely enter a battle. Hisuian Zoroark can be useful when an opponent relies on Bug, Fighting, Ghost, Poison or Normal damage. Ordinary Zoroark instead asks you to manage its weaknesses to Bug, Fighting and Fairy while protecting a frail health bar.

The distinction also affects team construction. A team that already has several Pokémon vulnerable to Fighting may value Hisuian Zoroark’s listed Fighting resistance as a pivot. A team that needs a durable answer to Dark attacks gets no such help from either form, because Dark is the listed Hisuian weakness and ordinary Zoroark is not presented as a defensive answer in the available data.

What the current rankings actually tell you

Ranking sites are useful for screening candidates, but they are not an official ladder rating. PvPoke explains that its rankings come from simulated matchups and that exact positions can change as the simulator and ranking algorithms improve. A number therefore describes the assumptions behind a snapshot: league, moveset, shield scenario, opponent pool and scoring method.

Form and league Displayed evidence How to interpret it
Hisuian Zoroark, Great League Rank 440 of 1,143; suggested build 0/15/11 at level 21.5 and 1,500 CP Mid-pack candidate, not an open-league staple
Hisuian Zoroark, Ultra League Rank 386 of 841; suggested build 1/15/15 at level 40.5 and 2,498 CP Also mid-pack; useful only when its matchups fit
Hisuian Zoroark, Master League No ranking information supplied by the cited guide Do not infer a Master League result from the Great or Ultra figures
Ordinary Zoroark, Great League Recent analysis describes it as too fragile for strong open-league play Consider a narrow matchup or cup, not a default investment
Ordinary Zoroark, Ultra League The same analysis says it remains poor in Ultra League Requires an especially strong format-specific reason

No independently measured universal win rate is established here. Do not turn a simulator’s win count into a promise that a Pokémon will win a fixed percentage of your games. Your result changes with the opponent set, lead order, IVs, move timing and shield calls.

Ordinary Zoroark: damage pacing without enough durability

The October 9, 2026 analysis lists ordinary Zoroark’s Great League example at 157 Attack, 88 Defense and 103 HP. Its high-stat-product variation is listed at 155 Attack and 105 HP, with a recommended 1/15/15 spread reaching 1,496 CP at level 21.5. These are the analyst’s example figures, not official league-wide stat rankings.

For Ultra League, the same analysis lists 202 Attack, 113 Defense and 134 HP. Its high-stat-product variation is 201 Attack, 114 Defense and 136 HP; the recommended 1/15/15 spread reaches 2,497 CP at level 42. The relatively low defensive totals explain why ordinary Zoroark can lose quickly when it cannot secure a resistance or a shield advantage.

Fast moves

Fast move Damage per turn Energy per turn Important qualification
Shadow Claw 3.0 4.0 Reaches a 40-energy Foul Play in five moves in the cited analysis
Sucker Punch 4.0 3.5 Event move; more fast-move damage but slower Foul Play pacing
Snarl 1.67 4.33 Displayed with a 1.5-second cooldown in the analysis

Sucker Punch looks attractive because its listed damage is higher, but it generates less energy than Shadow Claw. The difference matters because Foul Play costs 40 energy. The analysis says Shadow Claw reaches that first Foul Play in five moves, while Sucker Punch needs another move. In a narrow fast-move race, the earlier charge can matter more than the extra chip damage.

That is not a universal verdict for every shield state. The dated analysis reports Shadow Claw performing better in some Great League one-shield matchups, while Sucker Punch performs better in other shield scenarios. Both overall results are described as limited, and the analyst concludes that ordinary Zoroark remains poor in Ultra League. Treat those statements as that analyst’s simulations, not as a developer ruling or direct playtest.

Charged moves

Move Listed damage Energy cost Potential role
Foul Play 65 40 Primary affordable Dark pressure
Night Shade 70 45 Alternative Ghost damage at a higher cost
Sludge Bomb 80 50 Coverage option for a defined matchup
Flamethrower 90 55 Expensive coverage; difficult to reach with a frail Pokémon

For ordinary Zoroark, a second charged move should be justified by a team plan. Unlocking every coverage option does not create bulk, and carrying an expensive move can leave you exposed before it fires. Shadow Claw with Foul Play gives the clearest energy-pressure plan in the cited analysis; alternative moves are format-specific choices rather than automatic upgrades.

Hisuian Zoroark: a resistance-based specialist

The current guide recommends Shadow Claw, Swift and Shadow Ball in both Great and Ultra League. Shadow Claw is listed at 3.00 damage per turn and 4.00 energy per turn; Snarl is listed at 1.67 damage per turn and 4.33 energy per turn.

Charged move Listed power Energy What it contributes
Swift 55 35 Low-cost move for pressure and baiting decisions
Shadow Ball 90 50 High-impact Ghost damage when you can reach it
Foul Play 65 40 Dark-type alternative for particular targets
Sludge Bomb 80 50 Coverage for a deliberately selected cup or matchup
Flamethrower 90 55 Expensive coverage with a higher energy requirement

The recommended set works because Swift gives Hisuian Zoroark a cheaper charged move while Shadow Ball supplies a stronger payoff. Shadow Claw keeps the same 4.00 energy-per-turn pacing as ordinary Zoroark’s best energy option in the cited tables. The set is not proof that every alternative is inferior; it is the current guide’s default for both leagues.

Hisuian Zoroark’s main advantage is not a superior ranking number. It is the chance to enter attacks that ordinary Zoroark cannot comfortably absorb. The defensive chart lists resistance to Bug, Fighting, Ghost and Poison, plus a double resistance to Normal, while listing Dark as its weakness. That profile can produce a favorable switch, but only if the rest of your team covers the attacks that exploit its Dark weakness.

How shield scenarios change the choice

When both players have shields

With shields available, fast-move timing and the first charged move often determine whether a frail Pokémon gets to play its role. Ordinary Zoroark’s Shadow Claw-to-Foul Play pacing is the key point in the dated analysis. Sucker Punch may deal more damage per turn, but its lower energy generation can leave it behind in a bait-or-shield sequence.

Hisuian Zoroark can use Swift to force an earlier shield decision, then threaten Shadow Ball if the opponent declines. Do not assume the opponent must shield: the correct choice depends on whether the predicted attack is resisted, whether the opponent can reach its own move first, and whether preserving a shield is more valuable than protecting the current Pokémon.

When one shield is left

The ordinary-form analysis specifically reports different outcomes for Shadow Claw and Sucker Punch in different Great League one-shield matchups. That is why a fast-move choice should be tested against the exact cup roster rather than selected from damage-per-turn alone.

Hisuian Zoroark’s resistance profile becomes more valuable when a one-shield battle lets it survive one additional resisted fast move or charged attack. The benefit disappears if the opponent carries a super-effective Dark move or can farm energy after forcing a switch.

When shields are down

Unshielded battles punish frailty and expensive moves. Ordinary Zoroark may fail to reach Flamethrower or another 50-plus-energy option before fainting. Hisuian Zoroark’s Shadow Ball is also expensive, so Swift’s 35-energy cost is important for maintaining pressure. In either form, preserve stored energy before switching when the matchup allows it; a later opponent may be forced to shield a move they cannot identify safely.

League-by-league guidance

Great League

Great League is the most defensible place to experiment because both forms can be built near 1,500 CP without the Ultra League’s much larger Stardust and candy commitment. The cited Hisuian guide’s snapshot uses 0/15/11 at level 21.5 and exactly 1,500 CP. Ordinary Zoroark’s cited 1/15/15 example reaches 1,496 CP at level 21.5.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an open Great League team, treat ordinary Zoroark as a high-risk pick. Its listed Attack, Defense and HP examples show why it cannot rely on neutral damage for long. Hisuian Zoroark is the more sensible experiment when your roster benefits from its listed resistances, but rank 440 of 1,143 still places it outside the group most players would call a staple.

Ultra League

Ultra League raises the resource cost and exposes bulk problems more severely. The ordinary-form example reaches 2,497 CP at level 42 with a 1/15/15 spread, while the Hisuian guide’s example reaches 2,498 CP at level 40.5 with 1/15/15.

The current ordinary-Zoroark analysis calls its Ultra League performance poor. Hisuian Zoroark’s rank of 386 of 841 is better positioned in the snapshot but still does not justify building one blindly. Before investing, run the exact cup or open-league roster with your intended moves and shield settings.

Master League

The available Hisuian guide provides no Master League ranking information, and the ordinary analysis does not establish a positive Master League case. Do not extrapolate from Great or Ultra League figures. A Master League investment should wait for format-specific evidence, a clearly defined limited cup, or a personal collection goal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision process before you spend resources

  1. Identify the format. Check whether you are preparing for open Great League, open Ultra League, or a restricted cup. A Pokémon that is merely interesting in a cup may be a poor open-league investment.
  2. Write down the attacks your team struggles with. Hisuian Zoroark’s listed Bug, Fighting, Ghost, Poison and Normal resistances matter only when those attack types appear in the format. Also note the Dark weakness you must cover.
  3. Choose the league-appropriate candidate. Compare the cited CP and level examples with your actual specimen. Do not copy an IV spread blindly if it exceeds the league limit or requires an unaffordable level.
  4. Set the fast move deliberately. For ordinary Zoroark, compare Shadow Claw’s faster Foul Play pacing with Sucker Punch’s higher fast-move damage. For Hisuian Zoroark, start with Shadow Claw unless the format-specific simulation gives you a reason to use Snarl.
  5. Unlock charged moves only after testing the role. Hisuian Zoroark’s current default is Swift and Shadow Ball. Ordinary Zoroark’s Foul Play is the affordable pressure option; add Sludge Bomb, Flamethrower or Night Shade only when a specific matchup requires the coverage.
  6. Simulate the exact shield state. Check zero-, one- and two-shield scenarios against the likely opponent pool. Record whether the result depends on a bait, a tie, or a particular IV breakpoint.
  7. Practice the switch plan. Decide which teammate absorbs Dark attacks aimed at Hisuian Zoroark and which teammate benefits when ordinary Zoroark baits a shield. A moveset cannot repair a team with no safe switch.
  8. Recheck after balance changes. Rankings and move values can change. PvPoke explicitly warns that exact rankings may move as its simulator and algorithms improve, and the Hisuian database rank is a live snapshot.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling Hisuian Zoroark a meta staple because it is the better of these two. Relative superiority does not equal top-tier performance; its cited rankings remain mid-pack.
  • Assuming Sucker Punch solves ordinary Zoroark’s problems. Its 4.0 damage-per-turn value is attractive, but its 3.5 energy-per-turn rate delays Foul Play compared with Shadow Claw.
  • Using the same fast move in every shield scenario. The dated analysis reports different results for Shadow Claw and Sucker Punch depending on shields and matchups.
  • Spending Ultra League resources before checking the cup. Level-40-plus builds cost considerably more than Great League experiments, and neither form has a universal open-league recommendation here.
  • Reading a rank as a win rate. A rank is a simulated ordering under stated assumptions, not a guarantee for your battle history.
  • Ignoring move accessibility. Sucker Punch is identified as an event move for ordinary Zoroark. Confirm that your individual Pokémon can learn the move before planning around it.
  • Trusting an opinion as an official ruling. Analyst JRE47’s line, “Zoroark is DOA, regardless of moves,” is an opinion from an October 9, 2026 analysis, not a statement from Niantic or Pokémon GO’s developers.

Final recommendation

For a new investment, start with Hisuian Zoroark only when you can name the team or cup role its Normal/Ghost typing will perform. The current Shadow Claw, Swift and Shadow Ball recommendation gives it a coherent plan, while its listed resistances offer defensive opportunities ordinary Zoroark lacks. Keep expectations measured: the available rankings are snapshots, and no universal win-rate dataset establishes either form as a reliable open-league staple.

Ordinary Zoroark is a specialist experiment. Shadow Claw reaches Foul Play sooner than Sucker Punch, but the species’ low bulk leaves little margin for a mistimed shield or a neutral matchup. If you build it, do so for a specific matchup, restricted format or collection objective, and validate that plan under the shield scenarios you actually play.
