There is no single winner for every NAS buyer. ZimaCube 2 is one configurable product sold in three materially different hardware tiers. Synology and QNAP are families of NAS devices whose bays, processors, network ports, operating systems and software limits change by model. The right choice is the exact system that fits your drives, network, applications, expansion plan and complete purchase cost—not the brand name on the case.
This guide separates the ZimaCube 2 configurations, explains what must be checked on a specific Synology or QNAP model, and gives you a practical way to choose without treating platform documentation as performance testing.

Start with the decision, not the brand
Choose a ZimaCube 2 when you want a clearly specified six-bay platform with multiple operating-system options, four M.2 positions and, on the higher tiers, a 10GbE interface and a discrete GPU. Choose Synology when a particular DiskStation provides the DSM features and support model you need and you prefer an appliance-oriented software experience. Choose QNAP when a specific NAS and its selected operating system—QTS or QuTS hero—match your filesystem, data-reduction, caching or expansion requirements.
Those are starting points, not universal rankings. Before buying, write down the exact model number, drive count and sizes, required services, client network speeds, backup destination and upgrade horizon. A comparison between “ZimaCube 2” and “Synology” or “QNAP” without those details can produce a confident but invalid recommendation.

What ZimaCube 2 actually includes
The manufacturer lists three ZimaCube 2 configurations. Configuration-specific claims should always name the tier because the processor, memory, system drive and graphics hardware differ substantially.
| Configuration | Processor | Memory | System storage | Graphics | Network listed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard ZimaCube 2 | Intel Core i3-1215U | 8 GB LPDDR5 | 256 GB NVMe | Not listed | 2 × 2.5GbE |
| ZimaCube 2 Pro | Intel Core i5-1235U | 16 GB | 256 GB NVMe | Not listed | 2 × 2.5GbE plus an additional 10GbE port listed |
| ZimaCube 2 Creator Pack | Intel Core i5-1235U | 64 GB | 1 TB NVMe | NVIDIA RTX PRO 2000 | 2 × 2.5GbE plus an additional 10GbE port listed |
These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independent speed, noise, power or reliability results. Confirm the configuration and current availability at the time of purchase; listings can change.
Drive layout and expansion
The product listing describes six SATA bays for 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch hard drives, plus four M.2 slots on a seventh bay. That arrangement lets you plan bulk capacity and solid-state storage separately, but it is important to verify how the selected software uses those devices. An M.2 slot may be used for a system volume, cache or data pool depending on the operating system and its configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTwo rear USB-C ports are listed as supporting Thunderbolt 4 direct connection. A direct-attached device or client still needs compatible hardware, cable and software; the port specification alone does not establish a particular transfer rate for every workload.
Operating-system choice
The manufacturer lists compatibility with CasaOS, Linux, OpenMediaVault, Unraid, Home Assistant OS, TrueNAS, OpenWrt, pfSense, LibreELEC, Windows and Android. “Compatible” is not the same as equal support, installation simplicity, driver coverage or feature parity. Check the current documentation for the exact release you plan to install, especially for storage pools, snapshots, boot media, GPU use and network services.

How Synology should be evaluated
Synology is not one hardware specification. Start with a specific DiskStation model, then validate its current DSM compatibility and limitation notes. Synology describes DSM as a Linux-based NAS operating system with storage management, file sharing and network services.
DSM storage and protection features
DSM documentation covers Btrfs and ext4, multiple RAID options, SSD cache and other storage-management functions. The available RAID levels, drive combinations, cache behavior and expansion options depend on the DiskStation model. Treat the general DSM feature list as a menu of possibilities, not a promise that every unit supports every item.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Remote access and everyday administration
DSM documentation also describes QuickConnect, file-sharing protocols and network services. These can make a managed appliance attractive for households and small teams that want a central file platform without assembling an operating system themselves. Confirm which services are enabled, how they are exposed to the internet and whether the selected model has a stated limitation before relying on them.
Questions to answer for a DiskStation
- How many drive bays are present, and which drive sizes and models are on the current compatibility list?
- Does the model support the DSM filesystem, RAID type, snapshots, SSD cache or expansion method your plan requires?
- Are memory, network adapters and expansion units upgradeable on this exact chassis?
- Does its processor and memory meet the applications you intend to run, rather than merely boot DSM?
- What backup and recovery workflow will you use if the NAS, a drive or the whole room is lost?
How QNAP should be evaluated
With QNAP, hardware selection and operating-system selection are linked. QNAP distinguishes QTS, which uses ext4, from QuTS hero, which uses ZFS. The platform comparison also describes differences involving caching, compression, deduplication and expansion.
QTS and QuTS hero are not interchangeable labels
ZFS-based QuTS hero may be the relevant choice when your design depends on the filesystem’s integrity and data-management features, but only if the selected QNAP model supports it and has the required memory and drive configuration. QTS may be the appropriate choice for a model and workflow built around ext4. Do not infer operating-system support from the QNAP brand alone.

Validate the complete QNAP combination
- Confirm whether the exact hardware supports QTS, QuTS hero or both.
- Check the supported drive list and any requirements for SSD tiers, cache or system pools.
- Verify that compression, deduplication, snapshots and expansion work as expected on that model and OS.
- Check application availability for the chosen operating system, not merely for QNAP in general.
- Document the migration path before creating a pool; moving between filesystems can require backup, re-creation and restore.
Compare the hardware that affects your workload
Use the following axes when placing a ZimaCube 2 tier beside a particular Synology DiskStation or QNAP model. Every row needs an answer from the exact product page or compatibility list.
Recommended Free Tools
| Axis | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Drive bays | Determines raw capacity, redundancy choices and future replacement room. | Bay count, 3.5-inch/2.5-inch support, hot-swap design and approved drives. |
| Solid-state storage | Can hold the system, a fast tier, cache or a separate pool. | M.2 or 2.5-inch SSD positions, supported protocols and software roles. |
| CPU and memory | Sets the ceiling for applications, encryption, containers and concurrent users. | Exact processor, installed memory, upgrade limit and application requirements. |
| Graphics | Useful for workloads that explicitly use a GPU. | Whether the GPU is included, supported by the chosen OS and usable by the target application. |
| Ethernet | Controls the fastest network path between NAS, switch and clients. | Port count and speed, link aggregation support, switch capacity and client adapters. |
| Filesystem and RAID | Affects snapshots, recovery, expansion and usable capacity. | Supported filesystem, RAID layouts, pool rules and migration limits. |
| Software | Determines how easily you can run the services you actually need. | DSM, QTS, QuTS hero or another OS; app availability and update policy. |
| Expansion | Changes whether you can grow without replacing the enclosure. | Expansion units, drive migration rules, USB or Thunderbolt roles and documented limits. |
Match the NAS to a real workload
Household files and a private cloud
For documents, photos and shared folders, prioritize a supported filesystem, straightforward user management, dependable backup and a model with enough bays for your desired redundancy. A DSM DiskStation may fit if its model-specific DSM features cover those needs. A ZimaCube 2 running a familiar NAS distribution may fit if you value operating-system choice. A QNAP model can work as well, but select QTS or QuTS hero deliberately rather than accepting the default without checking its consequences.
Media serving
Media applications differ in whether they direct-play files or transcode them. Before treating any NAS as a media server, identify the codecs, number of simultaneous users and client devices, then verify that the processor, memory, GPU and application support those tasks. The Creator Pack is the only listed ZimaCube 2 tier that includes an NVIDIA RTX PRO 2000; that specification does not by itself prove that a particular media application will use the GPU.
Development, containers and home-lab services
Choose based on the exact container, virtual-machine or service stack. The ZimaCube 2’s listed OS compatibility gives you a broad starting set, while DSM and QNAP systems provide their own application ecosystems. Check architecture, memory requirements, storage permissions, hardware passthrough and update procedures before committing to a platform.
Large backup repositories
For backups, bay count and recovery design matter more than a headline CPU. Define retention, versioning, encryption and an off-NAS copy. Snapshots can speed recovery from accidental changes, but they are not a substitute for a separate backup that remains available when the NAS is damaged or encrypted.

High-bandwidth editing or large local transfers
A 10GbE port can help only when the NAS, switch, cabling, client adapter, storage pool and workload can sustain the path. The ZimaCube 2 Pro and Creator Pack listings include an additional 10GbE port; the standard listing shows dual 2.5GbE. A Synology or QNAP candidate must be checked for the same capability, either built in or through a supported adapter.
Plan the network end to end
Network speed is a chain, not a single specification. Map every hop before buying a faster NAS.
- List each client that will access the NAS and record its actual Ethernet or Wi-Fi capability.
- Identify the switch ports and uplinks between those clients and the NAS.
- Check whether the chosen NAS has 2.5GbE, 10GbE or an expansion path to those speeds.
- Verify cabling and transceiver requirements for the selected links.
- Decide whether several clients will share one uplink; a fast NAS port does not guarantee that each client receives that rate simultaneously.
- Test the complete path after installation with the intended file sizes and applications, rather than assuming the port label predicts application performance.
Capacity, RAID and backup decisions
Begin with the data you need to store today, then add growth, temporary working space and protection overhead. Raw disk capacity is not the same as usable capacity: parity or mirroring, filesystem metadata, snapshots and reserved space reduce what users can write.
Write down your recovery objectives before selecting a RAID layout. RAID can keep a pool available after certain drive failures, but it does not protect against deletion, corruption, theft or a site-wide event. Keep at least one separate backup copy and periodically perform a restore test. For a ZimaCube 2, Synology or QNAP, the exact RAID and snapshot choices come from the selected operating system and model documentation.

The ZimaCube 2 listing accepts 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch SATA hard drives in its six bays, but you should still verify the current compatibility information for the specific drives. Synology and QNAP publish model-specific drive lists and limitations. Mixing capacities or drive classes can change the usable pool and replacement strategy, so document the intended layout before purchasing.

Understand total system cost
Do not compare enclosure prices alone. Build the same bill of materials for each candidate.
| Cost component | What to include |
|---|---|
| NAS enclosure | The exact ZimaCube 2 tier, DiskStation model or QNAP model. |
| Data drives | All 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch SATA drives, including the protection and growth plan. |
| SSD storage | M.2 or other SSDs for system, cache or a separate pool where supported. |
| Network upgrades | Switch ports, client adapters, cabling and any supported NAS adapter. |
| Backup media | External drives or another destination sized for the retention policy. |
| Expansion | Approved expansion units, trays, adapters or replacement parts. |
| Software and services | Any required application, subscription or remote-access service, if applicable. |
Prices and availability change, and the cited product specifications do not establish a current like-for-like price survey. Record the date and region for every quote so a low enclosure price does not hide the cost of drives, networking or backup.
A practical selection procedure
- Define the workload. Separate file sharing, backup, media serving, containers, virtual machines and high-speed editing; do not use “general use” as the only requirement.
- Set the capacity target. Calculate current data, growth, snapshots and backup retention, then determine the number of bays and drive types required.
- Choose the network target. Decide whether 1GbE, 2.5GbE or 10GbE is justified by clients and workload, and budget the switch and adapters.
- Select the ZimaCube 2 tier or competing model. For ZimaCube 2, choose Standard, Pro or Creator Pack explicitly. For Synology or QNAP, record the full model number.
- Validate software. Check DSM limitations, QTS versus QuTS hero support, or the compatibility and documentation for the alternative OS you intend to install.
- Confirm expansion and recovery. Verify memory, SSD, drive, network and enclosure expansion limits, then write the backup and restore procedure.
- Compare the complete cost. Add drives, SSDs, network hardware, backup media and any required software before making the decision.
- Recheck volatile details. Product listings, compatibility lists, software versions and prices can change; confirm them immediately before ordering.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Comparing a product with a brand family
“ZimaCube 2 versus Synology” is not a like-for-like specification comparison. Replace the brand placeholder with a DiskStation model and DSM version or a QNAP model plus QTS or QuTS hero.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Assuming every listed feature is universal
DSM functions vary by model, and QNAP’s filesystem and data-reduction features vary by hardware and operating system. Read the limitation notes for the exact unit.
Buying 10GbE before upgrading the rest of the path
Without a compatible switch, client adapter, cabling and storage workload, the extra port may not improve the task you care about. Map the path first.
Treating snapshots as backups
Snapshots help recover from certain logical mistakes, but they remain on the storage system. Maintain an independent copy and verify that you can restore it.
Assuming compatible means turnkey
The ZimaCube 2 operating-system list demonstrates broad compatibility, not identical installation effort or feature support. Confirm drivers, storage management, updates and application integration for the chosen OS.
