Zinedine Zidane’s first home match in charge of France ended in a 1–1 Nations League draw with Italy at Stade de France on Friday, October 2, 2026. Michael Olise put France ahead, Alessandro Bastoni equalized, and Dayot Upamecano was sent off late as the home side finished with 10 men.
How France and Italy reached the 1–1 result
The official match record lists Olise’s goal for France in the 55th minute, Bastoni’s equalizer in the 68th, and Upamecano’s dismissal in the 85th. The match was played in Nations League League A at Stade de France in Saint-Denis. The French Football Federation’s match record confirms the score and event times.

Olise breaks the deadlock
The Associated Press, in a report republished by FOX Sports, said Rayan Cherki took a short free kick before Olise curled a shot from 20 meters into the net. Le Monde described the goal as a left-footed free kick into the top corner. The accounts differ on the precise execution, but both report that Olise gave France the lead.

AP described Bastoni running through to score low inside the right post. Le Monde said the equalizer followed a mistake by Lucas Da Cunha. Italy’s goal arrived 13 minutes after Olise’s opener, according to the official event times.

Upamecano’s late red card
France defender Dayot Upamecano was sent off in the 85th minute. Le Monde reported that Moise Kean drew the foul that led to the dismissal. France therefore played the closing minutes with 10 men.
France had the ball, but Italy kept the game open
Le Monde’s account said France controlled possession for much of the match but found it difficult to get through Italy’s compact defense. That balance helps explain the frustration in the French camp: possession did not translate into a second goal, while Italy took its chance to draw level. AP also pointed to Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma’s performance as a factor in the result.
After the match, Zidane told AP: “I’m disappointed for the players because we deserved better. We had chances to kill the game off but we didn’t and football’s like that sometimes,” he said. “But it was encouraging. Honestly, I’m proud of how we played.”

A warmly received return, without the win
For Zidane, the night marked his first match in France as national-team coach and his return to Stade de France in that role. Le Monde reported that it was 20 years since his last playing match at the venue. The newspaper put attendance at 77,000 and described chants of Zidane’s name, applause when the lineup was announced, and a “Welcome home” banner.
AP quoted Zidane on the reception: “It was touching,” he said of the ovation he received. “We would have loved to give the stadium and the whole nation a victory, but it wasn’t to be.” The welcome was a highlight of the evening, but the draw left the crowd without the home victory it had hoped for.
Group A1 picture after the match
In its October 2, 2026 report, AFP said France had seven points in Group A1, Belgium six and Italy four. Those figures are a snapshot from immediately after this match, not a current standings table. AFP said France and Belgium were due to meet on Monday, October 5, while Italy’s next listed fixture was at home to Turkey.
