There is no universal winner. Compression usually is the safer first choice for general ZFS file storage because it often captures most available savings with much lower memory and administrative cost. Deduplication can save more when your pool contains many genuinely identical blocks—such as virtual-machine images cloned from one base or similar system backups—but it adds ongoing lookup, memory, and I/O overhead. Measure your own pool before enabling it.
The short answer: start with compression, prove the case for deduplication
Compression and deduplication remove different kinds of redundancy. Compression encodes each record into fewer bytes when its contents are statistically compressible. Deduplication (dedup) compares blocks and stores one copy when multiple writes contain exactly the same block. A pool can benefit from both, but a good result from one does not predict a good result from the other.

OpenZFS documentation gives a deliberately conservative rule for ordinary file storage: “For general file storage, compression usually gives most of the benefit at a fraction of the cost.” The same documentation says, “Unless you have a specific reason, do not enable dedup.” Those statements are guidance, not a promise about a particular pool, drive layout, record size, or workload.
The practical sequence is therefore:
- Keep compression enabled or test it first.
- Measure logical and allocated space on the actual datasets.
- Simulate deduplication with
zdb -S pool. - Consider dedup only when the simulation shows a comfortably greater-than-2x ratio and the workload has a credible source of identical blocks.
- Plan memory, I/O, and migration work before turning the dataset property on.
How the two features work
Compression reduces each record
ZFS writes data in records. Compression examines a record and stores a shorter representation when the selected algorithm can reduce it. The result is local to that record: two records that happen to contain similar text are compressed independently, and two identical records are not automatically shared merely because they are identical.

Compression is selected through the dataset’s compression property. OpenZFS describes lz4 as fast with a moderate ratio and zstd as capable of a higher ratio at higher CPU cost. The useful choice depends on whether your bottleneck is processor time, storage bandwidth, or capacity. A compression ratio is an observation about the data currently represented in a dataset, not a guarantee for future files.
Deduplication shares identical blocks
Deduplication operates at block level. On a write, ZFS checks whether the block’s contents already exist. If they do, the new reference can point to the existing block instead of allocating another copy. The pool maintains a deduplication table (DDT) for these lookups. DDT work occurs on writes and when blocks are freed, so dedup affects routine operation even after the initial data load.
Dedup does not find “similar” data. A block must match another block exactly. A collection of photos that differ by one byte, compressed archives with different metadata, or documents with small changes may produce little sharing even though they look alike to a person. Conversely, cloned virtual-machine disks or repeated backup images can contain large runs of identical blocks.

The right comparison is the redundancy your workload actually contains, not a generic percentage found in a specification sheet.
| Workload characteristic | Compression outlook | Deduplication outlook | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plain text, source code, logs, and other uncompressed formats | Often favorable because repeated patterns remain inside each record. | Usually limited unless whole blocks recur exactly. | Measure the dataset’s compressratio and logical-versus-used space. |
| Already-compressed media or archives | Often little additional reduction; the result depends on the contents. | Useful only where complete blocks are duplicated. | Check the measured ratio rather than assuming either feature helps. |
| Virtual-machine images cloned from a common base | Can reduce patterns within each image. | Potentially strong because identical base blocks can be shared. | Run zdb -S pool and confirm DDT memory fits the system. |
| Backup targets receiving similar systems repeatedly | Depends on the files and record contents in each backup. | Potentially strong when backup blocks are identical across generations. | Simulate the current pool and account for future retention growth. |
| Unique, frequently changing data | May still help if individual records are compressible. | Often weak because changed blocks no longer match. | Observe the pool over a representative period. |
Deduplication can therefore save more in a narrowly defined, block-repetitive workload, while compression is more broadly useful. Neither feature can be assigned a fixed savings percentage without measurements from the pool that will use it.
Why deduplication costs more to run
Memory for the DDT
Every deduplicated block needs metadata. OpenZFS documentation gives a planning estimate of at least 1.25 GiB of RAM per 1 TiB of stored data. This is not a universal requirement: the documentation notes that actual needs vary with block sizes and the amount of duplicated data. Treat the figure as an initial capacity check, not a promise that a system with exactly that amount will perform well.

OpenZFS workload-tuning guidance separately describes DDT entries as using slightly more than 320 bytes per cached entry. That number explains why the number of unique blocks and the portion of the DDT that remains cached matter. It is a per-entry planning detail, not a replacement for sizing total system memory.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Lookups, I/O, and cache misses
Deduplication requires DDT lookups while blocks are written and freed. If the relevant DDT stays in memory, those lookups are less disruptive. When it does not remain cached, the extra I/O can reduce write and administrative performance. A dedup ratio that looks attractive on paper can therefore be a poor operational trade if the system spends much of its time waiting for DDT access.
Compression also consumes CPU, but its overhead is generally easier to reason about: the algorithm processes records as they are written and read. Choosing a faster algorithm such as lz4 or a higher-ratio option such as zstd changes that CPU-versus-space balance without creating a global table of block references.
Measure before changing a pool
Inspect compression settings recursively
Properties can differ between a parent dataset and its children. Inspect the complete hierarchy rather than assuming one setting applies everywhere:

zfs get compression,compressratio,refcompressratio pool/data
zfs list -o name,used,logicalused,compressratio -r pool
compressratio describes compression observed in the dataset’s blocks. refcompressratio is useful when snapshots or clones make space accounting less intuitive because it focuses on data referenced by that dataset. Compare these values with logicalused and used; a ratio by itself does not tell you how much free space the pool will gain.
Simulate deduplication without enabling it
OpenZFS recommends simulating the DDT for current pool data:
zdb -S pool
Use the simulated dedup ratio as a screening test. The documentation suggests that deduplication is not worthwhile unless the result is comfortably above 2x. “Comfortably” matters: the number is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee of future savings or performance. A simulation based on today’s data can overstate the result if new data will be more unique, and it does not remove the need to plan DDT memory.

Check an enabled DDT
If deduplication is already in use, inspect its state with:
zpool status -D pool
Review the relevant deduplication properties on each dataset as well. Deduplication is a dataset property, defaults to off, and can be limited to datasets that have a measured reason to use it. There is no requirement to enable it for an entire pool simply because one workload benefits.
Understand what a property change does—and does not do
New writes use the new setting
Changing compression affects data written after the change. It does not walk through existing blocks and recompress them. Changing a dataset’s deduplication setting likewise affects newly written data; it does not retroactively discover and merge every old block.

This distinction explains why a property change can appear to have no immediate capacity effect. Existing files, snapshots, and clones continue to reference their already allocated blocks until a rewrite creates new blocks under the current policy.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchRewriting data is a separate operation
To apply a new compression policy to old data, the data must be rewritten. The exact rewrite method depends on your operational tooling and snapshot strategy, so treat it as a migration: verify backups, estimate temporary space, account for snapshot references, and confirm the resulting ratios afterward. Do not assume that toggling a property is equivalent to a conversion job.
Allocation geometry can hide the benefit
Nominal compressibility is not identical to allocated-space savings. OpenZFS documents a concrete example: a 16 KiB record on 4 KiB sectors needs at least 25% savings before it reduces allocated disk space. Smaller reductions can still leave the record occupying the same number of sectors after rounding.
This is why a compression algorithm may report that records became smaller while the pool’s used space changes less than expected. Record size, sector size, metadata, snapshots, and other allocation details all influence the physical result. Evaluate used and logicalused on the real dataset instead of multiplying a nominal ratio by its logical size.
OpenZFS version details that affect expectations
Beginning with OpenZFS 2.2.0, new datasets default to compression=on. Datasets created before that change retain their prior setting. Consequently, two datasets on the same pool can have different defaults simply because they were created at different times.
Check the property explicitly on every dataset you care about. Do not infer it from the version alone, and do not assume that upgrading OpenZFS rewrites old data or changes an existing dataset’s stored blocks.
Best Value
Choosing a compression algorithm
lz4: lower CPU cost and fast processing
OpenZFS describes lz4 as fast with a moderate compression ratio. It is a sensible baseline when predictable throughput and low processing overhead matter more than extracting the highest possible ratio. The actual result still depends on the data and record allocation.
zstd: higher ratio at higher CPU cost
OpenZFS describes zstd as offering a higher ratio at higher CPU cost. It may suit a capacity-constrained system with spare processor headroom. Compare measured ratios and application performance on representative data rather than assuming that the higher-ratio algorithm is always the better choice.
A practical decision procedure
- Define the scope. List the datasets, snapshots, clones, record-size policies, sector geometry, and OpenZFS version involved. Include expected growth, not only today’s used space.
- Measure compression now. Capture
compressratio, refcompressratio, used, andlogicalusedfor representative datasets. - Classify the redundancy. Identify whether the workload is mainly compressible, contains repeated identical blocks, or has neither characteristic.
- Simulate dedup. Run
zdb -S pooland record the simulated ratio and any memory implications indicated by your pool’s block population. - Apply the threshold cautiously. A result only slightly above 2x is not a safe promise; OpenZFS guidance calls for a ratio comfortably above 2x before dedup is considered worthwhile.
- Reserve dedup for selected datasets. Enable the dataset property only where the measured workload justifies DDT overhead. Leave unrelated datasets with deduplication off.
- Plan capacity and recovery. Confirm available RAM, expected DDT growth, backup coverage, and a rollback or migration path before production use.
- Re-measure after real writes. Compare the same properties and pool status after a representative workload. Stop treating the simulation as a guarantee if the observed behavior diverges.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming dedup always saves more. It saves space only for identical blocks. Use the simulation and workload evidence.
- Assuming compression always wins. Already-compressed or unusual data may yield little reduction, and allocation rounding can erase small gains.
- Turning on dedup pool-wide by default. Dedup is a dataset property. Limit it to measured candidates so unrelated data does not consume DDT resources.
- Treating a property change as retroactive. Existing blocks remain as written until data is rewritten.
- Using a ratio as a capacity promise. Ratios describe observed or simulated data. Future files, snapshots, block sizes, and duplication patterns can differ.
- Ignoring snapshots during a rewrite. Snapshots can continue referencing old blocks, so a rewrite may temporarily require more space and may not immediately return all expected capacity.
- Planning RAM from one slogan. The 1.25 GiB-per-TiB figure is an OpenZFS planning estimate, while the slightly-more-than-320-byte figure concerns cached DDT entries. Neither is a universal total-memory rule.
Workload-based recommendations
General file storage
Enable and measure compression first. This matches OpenZFS’s guidance that compression usually supplies most of the benefit for general file storage at a fraction of deduplication’s cost. Choose between a faster or higher-ratio algorithm according to measured CPU and capacity constraints.
Virtual-machine image repositories
Deduplication is worth investigating when many guests are cloned from the same base and retain identical blocks. Run the simulation on representative images, verify that the ratio is comfortably above 2x, and budget DDT memory before enabling dedup on the image dataset.
Backup targets
Repeated backups of similar systems can create identical blocks, making deduplication plausible. Retention changes and incremental backup behavior can alter the ratio, so include the intended backup schedule and growth in the measurement rather than testing only one snapshot.
Unique or already-compressed content
Use measured compression results and leave deduplication off unless the simulation demonstrates substantial identical-block sharing. Paying DDT costs for data that rarely repeats provides no space advantage.
Bottom line for a ZFS design
Compression is the default starting point because it works on a broad range of data and usually avoids deduplication’s DDT memory and lookup burden. Deduplication is a specialized optimization for pools with demonstrably repeated blocks. The deciding evidence is your pool’s measured compression accounting, a zdb -S pool simulation, the OpenZFS version and allocation geometry, and a realistic memory and performance plan—not a universal claim that one feature always saves more.
