Talk to people, inspect objects, read the Journal, and choose skills that support the kind of operant you want Hershel Wilk (alias CASCADE) to become. When a check appears, read its possible consequence before rolling; use Exertion only when the cost of failure is worse than the pressure it creates; and pause every Dramatic Encounter with Tactical View before committing to a move.
What ZERO PARADES: Director’s Cut asks you to do
ZERO PARADES is a single-player espionage cRPG from ZA/UM. You play operant Hershel Wilk, known by the alias CASCADE, as he returns to a damaged network for a mysterious assignment. The game combines city exploration, informant gathering and psychological investigation. Problems can be approached through subterfuge, violence, deduction or conversation, and your skills can change what you notice and which routes become available.

Its central idea is improvisation. The official description sets the expectation plainly: “Make it up as you go along.” Failure is also part of the design. As the same description puts it, “In this line of work you’re going to fail way more often than you succeed.” A failed check may redirect a scene, remove an option or impose a condition instead of producing a simple game-over screen. Treat the first playthrough as a developing investigation, not as a sequence of rolls that must all succeed.

If you want to start immediately, the PC version is the available choice on the dates above. If you prefer console controls, DualSense feedback or a television setup, the PS5 edition is the one to wait for. Your first hour: establish information before making commitments
Explore every available conversation
Speak with people who are available and inspect objects in your surroundings before choosing a lead. Not every conversation triggers an active roll. Optional dialogue can reveal context that makes a later decision easier to interpret, and skills may add observations without asking you to spend a resource. Early information is valuable even when it does not immediately advance an objective.
Let skills comment before you decide
Skills are not just bonuses attached to a combat statistic. The game advertises 15 unique skills, and they can reveal information, provide commentary and open different approaches. When a skill offers an observation, read it as a clue about the situation rather than as an instruction to follow. A comment can expose a social risk, a physical detail or a deductive connection that changes how you evaluate the next choice.

When several investigations are active, consult the Journal before selecting your next lead. It records who you intended to contact and what you have learned. This matters because one conversation can alter several tasks at once. The Journal lets you reconstruct your plan instead of relying on memory after a scene sends you in a different direction.
Delay irreversible-looking choices until you understand the cost
If the interface shows a check, a condition or a pressure consequence, pause and read it. You can often gather another clue, talk to another person or inspect an object before committing. Exploration is not wasted time: it is how you improve the quality of the decision you are about to make.
Build skills as a toolkit, not a single combat build
There is no requirement to make Hershel excellent at only one activity. A coherent emphasis helps the game recognise how you want to act, but excessive specialisation can close off clues and alternate routes. Start with a small group of skills that match your preferred approach, then keep enough flexibility to investigate information that falls outside it.

These are play-style priorities, not named character classes. The important decision is whether a skill investment helps you obtain information, create an approach or survive a consequence. If a new ability changes what you can notice, consider that access as valuable as any direct numerical advantage.
How checks work: read the route before you roll
Identify the type of check
Checks can be social, investigative, physical or deductive. The category tells you what kind of approach Hershel is attempting, but it does not guarantee that one category is always safer. A social check can still create a serious pressure cost; a physical check can protect an important lead; a deductive check can reveal information while exposing another vulnerability.
Read the consequence text
Before confirming a roll, inspect what success and failure mean in that scene. The game expects you to live with imperfect outcomes. Failure may redirect the investigation, consume health or pressure, remove information, or change your position. If the consequence is manageable, continuing is usually more productive than reloading immediately. If the failure would destroy a lead you deliberately want to preserve, that is the moment to consider spending Exertion or taking another preparatory action.
Do not treat a miss as a dead end
A failed roll is often another branch of the investigation. Follow the new information, note the resulting condition in the Journal, and reassess your next lead. Reloading every failure turns the game into a hidden puzzle with one approved solution, while the design is asking you to improvise through the route you created.
Use reloading deliberately
Reload only when you are testing an alternate choice or when a consequence makes the current investigation impossible for the way you want to play. Reloading is a personal option, not a required technique. A first run that includes failed checks will show you more of the game’s branching logic than a run in which every roll is forced to succeed.
Exertion: advantage with a pressure bill
Exertion improves a check by granting advantage, but the associated pressure cost applies to the choice itself. In practical terms, it is a gamble: you exchange a more favourable attempt now for a greater chance of accumulating a physical or psychological toll.

Spend it when the downside of failure is clear
- Use Exertion when a miss would lose an important lead or create a severe condition.
- Consider it when the check is the only visible way to protect information you have worked to obtain.
- Avoid spending it on routine uncertainty when a failure would merely open another route.
- Account for your current pressure state before confirming; the same cost is more dangerous when Hershel is already close to a threshold.
Do not interpret advantage as a guarantee. It improves the check, while the pressure cost is certain according to the choice shown on screen. Reserve the resource for decisions that materially change your investigation rather than using it on every roll.
Pressure states and lasting damage
The game represents the physical and psychological toll of operating in the field through three pressure states: Fatigue, Anxiety and Delirium. The official description calls these pressures a simulation of the “physical and psychological toll of being in-theatre.” Pushing too far can leave lasting damage, so pressure is not a disposable meter that you should empty between encounters.
Fatigue
Fatigue reflects physical overextension. Treat it as a warning that repeated exertion or demanding actions are narrowing your safe options. When a choice offers a physical route and a less costly alternative, compare the consequence rather than selecting force by habit.

Anxiety
Anxiety represents psychological strain. Social and investigative scenes can contribute to it just as physical scenes contribute to Fatigue, so a conversation-heavy character is not automatically protected from pressure. Watch the stated cost of each check and avoid stacking several risky choices without a reason.
Delirium
Delirium signals an especially serious psychological toll. If an action would push you toward it, ask whether the information or position gained is worth a condition that may affect later decisions. The game does not ask you to avoid all pressure; it asks you to recognise when improvisation has become self-destructive.
Because the three states can have long-term repercussions, plan around the whole investigation rather than one dramatic moment. A successful roll that leaves you badly compromised may be less useful than a failure that opens a sustainable alternative.

Dramatic Encounters: pause, inspect, then act
Dramatic Encounters are the moments when the game expects quick adaptation under pressure. Tactical View pauses the action, giving you time to inspect available moves and look ahead where the interface permits it. Use that pause as a planning screen, not merely as a way to slow down a real-time sequence.
- Enter Tactical View. Stop the encounter before selecting an action.
- Read every available response. Check which options are physical, social, investigative or otherwise non-physical, and note their stated costs.
- Look for a preview ability. If an ability lets you peek forward, use it before committing to a move whose consequence is unclear.
- Compare position, information and pressure. A move that deals with the immediate threat may cost a lead; another may preserve information but create a condition.
- Choose Exertion only after this comparison. Spend it when advantage protects something important, not simply because a roll looks uncertain.
- Continue through a manageable failure. Record what changed and use the new position to choose the next response.
Dramatic Encounters can include physical and non-physical solutions. Do not assume that the most forceful option is the intended one, or that a dialogue option is harmless. Read the complete response and its consequences before deciding.
Conditioning is a strategic commitment
Conditioning can change identity-related abilities and even alter game rules. That makes it more consequential than a cosmetic selection. Choose it with the kind of Hershel you want to play in mind, and revisit the Journal after a change so you can see which investigations or approaches now deserve attention.
For a first run, avoid selecting a commitment solely because it promises a short-term advantage. Ask whether it improves access to information, changes how you handle pressure or supports the skill emphasis you have already chosen. A coherent combination is easier to manage than several unrelated investments that each solve a different problem.
What the Director’s Cut adds
The Director’s Cut is a substantial revision rather than a name change. On PC it arrived as a free update for owners of ZERO PARADES: For Dead Spies on October 1, 2026. The following additions are the ones most relevant to a new player.

Director’s Cut accessibility features are not limited to one play style. Photosensitivity Mode, audio cues, expanded colour options, vibration controls and clearer explanations of game states can all affect which platform feels comfortable. Check the settings before your first serious encounter instead of waiting until a difficult scene.

Common beginner mistakes and how to correct them
Trying to win every roll
Symptom: You reload after every failure. Correction: Read the new route, note the cost and continue when the investigation remains viable. Failure is an intended way to reach information and consequences.
Spending Exertion automatically
Symptom: Every uncertain check receives advantage. Correction: Compare the pressure cost with the actual consequence of a miss. Keep Exertion for important leads and severe conditions.
Ignoring non-physical options
Symptom: You select the fastest forceful response in every Dramatic Encounter. Correction: Open Tactical View and inspect social, investigative and other non-physical responses before choosing.

Symptom: Several tasks appear to contradict one another. Correction: Re-open the Journal, review who you intended to contact and update your next lead using the new information.
Treating conditioning as decoration
Symptom: You choose a conditioning option for a short-term benefit without considering later rules. Correction: Select it as a strategic commitment that supports your skills and preferred approach.
Assuming clothing and interface options are cosmetic
Symptom: You ignore outfits and accessibility settings. Correction: Try clothing deliberately because it can trigger NPC reactions, and configure colour, audio, vibration and photosensitivity options before a long session.
A practical first-session checklist
- Talk to every available person and inspect nearby objects before committing to a lead.
- Read skill commentary as information about the situation, not merely as flavour text.
- Choose a coherent initial skill emphasis while preserving at least one way to pursue clues outside it.
- Open the Journal whenever a conversation changes more than one investigation.
- Before every check, identify its category and read the stated success and failure consequences.
- Use Tactical View in every Dramatic Encounter and compare physical with non-physical responses.
- Spend Exertion only when advantage protects an important lead or avoids a serious condition.
- Watch Fatigue, Anxiety and Delirium together; do not treat any one pressure state as harmless.
- Accept manageable failures and follow the route they create.
- Review conditioning, clothing and accessibility settings as part of your build, not as afterthoughts.
What to remember when a scene goes wrong
ZERO PARADES: Director’s Cut is most rewarding when you treat each decision as part of an investigation rather than as a test with one hidden correct answer. The Journal preserves your intent, skills expose additional context, Tactical View gives you time to plan, and pressure tells you when improvisation is becoming dangerous. Keep the consequences visible, protect the leads that matter most, and allow the story to continue through failures that you can still manage.
