An AI agent can read Ethereum state without access to a wallet’s signing key by making read-only JSON-RPC calls such as eth_call. It still needs an RPC endpoint, and the provider may require credentials. Token screening can surface evidence of risk, but it cannot guarantee that a token is safe or sellable; the endpoint and any transaction path also need their own security controls.
What “zero-key” means for an Ethereum state read
Ethereum applications connect to a node to read data or submit transactions. JSON-RPC is the interface for those requests, and eth_call runs a contract call against a chosen block state without creating a blockchain transaction. Geth describes it as an immediate message call that does not create a transaction. Geth’s eth namespace documentation also describes uses such as querying contract state, running contract validations, and checking the effects of a proposed call.

That makes “zero-key” a description of a particular authority boundary—not a guarantee supplied by Ethereum. A read-only call does not inherently require a transaction-signing key, but it does require a reachable node. If the node is run by an infrastructure provider, that provider’s authentication requirements apply; the protocol documentation does not establish that all endpoints are anonymous or credential-free.
- Signing authority: Keep the wallet signer out of the read path when the agent only needs to inspect state.
- RPC access: Configure a self-operated node or a provider endpoint. Check that provider’s authentication, availability, and usage terms.
- Call data: Treat the request as information sent to the endpoint, not as a private query simply because it creates no transaction.
Choose the block context before trusting a result
A state read answers a question about a particular block context. Select the block parameter to match the decision the agent is making; “current state” is not precise enough for consequential automation. The Execution API documentation describes latest, safe, finalized, and pending as available selectors, with different meanings and trade-offs.

| Selector | What it represents | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
latest |
The most recent canonical-chain block observed by the node. | Fresh, but the block may be reorganized. |
safe |
A block treated as safe under the documented chain assumptions. | Stronger security state than latest, with less immediate freshness. |
finalized |
A block treated as finalized under the documented chain assumptions. | Stronger settlement confidence, at the cost of using older state. |
pending |
A pending-state view offered by the node. | Useful only when the task needs pending state; it is not the same as a settled canonical block. |
For example, an agent that is monitoring a rapidly changing value may need a recent observation, while an agent making a consequential policy decision may prefer a finalized block. Record the selector and block context alongside the observation so downstream logic can tell what the result represents. A decision based on latest can change if the observed block is reorganized; choosing finalized trades freshness for stronger settlement confidence.
What token screening can—and cannot—establish
Screening should be treated as a set of checks that produce evidence, not as a certificate of safety. ERC-8126’s Ethereum Token Verification section specifies three useful elements: establish that code is deployed at the token address on the resolved chain, check for known vulnerability patterns, and provide a risk score from 0 to 100. It recommends OWASP Smart Contract Security Verification Standard (SCSVS) v0.0.1.

Verify the address and chain
ERC-8126 calls for using eth_getCode and checking that the returned bytecode is not 0x. This establishes that code exists at the address on the chain being queried. It does not establish that the address is the intended token, that the code behaves honestly, or that the asset can be sold. Resolve and retain the chain and contract address explicitly; an address without its chain context is not a complete identity.

Inspect known patterns and the score’s scope
Pattern checks only cover patterns the verifier knows how to recognize. A 0–100 score is a specification requirement for ERC-8126 verification, not a measured probability that a token is safe, and it should not be read as a universal pass threshold. A scanner repository may advertise checks for honeypots, rug pulls, bytecode, ownership, proxies, and dangerous functions, but a feature description is not independent evidence of detection quality.

Do not equate a code scan with sellability
A behavioral honeypot claim is stronger than finding deployed code or matching known patterns. The available evidence does not establish a universal honeypot test suite, validated scanner accuracy, or false-positive and false-negative rates. In particular, a passing score does not prove that a buyer can later sell. Treat any specific detector as a screening aid whose behavior and limitations need independent validation, not as a guarantee.
Protect the RPC endpoint and keep capabilities separate
An internet-facing RPC service expands the attack surface for the node. Geth warns that exposure to hostile clients can lead to crashes, resource exhaustion, lag behind chain progression, and—in configurations that expose relevant namespaces—attempts involving signing requests. It does not recommend public exposure without careful consideration.

A safer design keeps the agent’s read path distinct from any signing path. This is an architectural recommendation based on the risks of exposed RPC methods: an agent that only needs observations should not be able to reach signing methods or obtain signing credentials. For a public-facing service, Geth identifies controls including proxies, web application firewalls, application-level filtering, rate limiting, logging, TLS termination, and monitoring. These reduce exposure; they do not make an endpoint invulnerable.

- Apply filtering and rate limits at the service boundary, and use TLS for protected connections.
- Log and monitor request volume and behavior so operators can spot overload or unusual access.
- Keep any signer and its credentials on a separate, restricted path rather than placing them in the agent’s read environment.
Keep secrets out of predicate call data
When an agent framework interacts with on-chain predicates, do not put secrets in the data field. ERC-8257 states that this data is forwarded to predicates and can appear in RPC traces, node logs, and monitoring infrastructure. Use only information safe to disclose, such as public identifiers or proofs designed for disclosure. A read-only call is not a confidentiality mechanism for its inputs.

Composable calls create a separate state-context hazard. ERC-8257 describes how a predicate that reads another contract during a multi-call transition or callback can observe state that is stale or inconsistent with the state after the outer transaction settles. An access condition may be true at the moment it is checked and no longer be true after the full transaction completes. Design predicates and agent decisions with that timing boundary in mind rather than treating an intermediate observation as a guarantee about the final state.
Separate read privacy from transaction privacy
Remote reads disclose query information to the RPC operator. The Ethereum Foundation’s Reads project notes that a provider can learn queried wallet addresses from balance requests. Its team also says, “Origin privacy and correctness proofs remain an open problem at RPC latency and cost.” See the Ethereum Foundation Reads: Access Layer page for that qualification.
Privacy and correctness are distinct questions: a provider may see what the agent asks, while the agent may also need to decide how much to trust the response. Do not assume that using an RPC endpoint hides query origins or proves that responses are correct; the Reads project describes those as unresolved within the latency and cost constraints it discusses.

Transactions have a different exposure risk from reads. Ethereum.org describes generalized frontrunners as bots that watch the public mempool, copy potentially profitable transaction logic, substitute their own address, simulate the result, and submit a competing transaction with a higher gas price. The same source describes Flashbots as extending execution clients to submit MEV transactions to validators without revealing them to the public mempool, which prevents this specific generalized-frontrunner pattern. That does not mean every private route eliminates MEV or protects every transaction.
Quick Recap
A practical workflow for an agent operator
- Define the required authority. If the task is inspection only, make the agent’s data path read-only and do not provide it with a signing key.
- Select and assess the endpoint. Decide whether to operate a node or use a provider. Verify the chosen endpoint’s authentication requirements, reachable methods, and operational protections.
- Pin the chain and block context. Resolve the intended chain and token address, then choose an appropriate block selector for the decision’s freshness and settlement needs.
- Screen as evidence. Confirm deployed code with
eth_getCode, review known-pattern checks and score scope, and avoid treating any result as proof of safety or sellability. - Review disclosure and composition. Keep secrets out of predicate data and account for state changes between intermediate calls and transaction settlement.
- Handle any transaction separately. If the agent later acts, assess signing authority and public-mempool exposure as separate design decisions from its state reads.
