Both are live-service role-playing games with chance-based character and equipment systems, but their moment-to-moment play and banner rules are different enough that the better choice depends on what you enjoy.
This comparison separates the games’ combat formats, what can be confirmed about progression, and the gacha rules that matter before you spend. It also explains why Zenless Zone Zero’s permanent new-player guarantee should not be compared directly with Honkai: Star Rail’s recurring event-banner pity.
The short answer: action combat or turn planning?
The clearest dividing line is combat. Zenless Zone Zero is presented as an urban-fantasy action RPG, while Honkai: Star Rail is the turn-based team RPG choice.

How the combat formats differ
Zenless Zone Zero: an action-first structure
Zenless Zone Zero is described by its publisher as an urban-fantasy action RPG. Its setting follows the calamity called the Hollows and the New Eridu metropolis that remains afterward. The important comparison point is the input model: fights are designed around real-time action rather than waiting for a turn-selection prompt.
That makes the game a better initial fit for players who want their attention on the encounter as it unfolds. Your preference is not merely a matter of story or art style; it changes what you do from moment to moment. You should expect to engage with the battle directly instead of treating each round as a menu of commands.

Honkai: Star Rail: a turn-based team RPG
Honkai: Star Rail uses a turn-based combat format. You choose actions for a party, account for the order in which combatants act and plan how the team’s abilities work together over successive turns. It is therefore the natural starting point for someone who enjoys tactical selection and party construction more than real-time control.

What the source material does not establish
The available official material does not support a complete comparison of difficulty, combat depth, accessibility, average session length or total content volume. Those qualities can vary by update and by player, so they should not be inferred from the broad action-versus-turn-based distinction.
Setting and live-service context
Zenless Zone Zero’s urban-fantasy premise
Zenless Zone Zero takes place after the Hollows’ calamity, with New Eridu described as a remaining metropolis. That premise gives the game a contemporary urban-fantasy frame rather than a conventional space-faring one.

An October 12, 2026 announcement schedules Version 3.3 for October 21, 2026 and says the update will introduce mech combat in a main-story segment. The announcement lists planned availability on PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Cloud Gaming, PC, iOS, Android and Steam. These are forward-looking availability details from the announcement; Version 3.3 should not be described as already released on October 13, 2026.

Honkai: Star Rail’s continuing updates
Honkai: Star Rail remains a live service with version-specific characters, Light Cones, areas, events and combat effects. October 2026 Version 4.6 update material confirms that ongoing pattern. It demonstrates continuing additions, but it does not establish that Star Rail has more content, a faster update cadence or a larger game than Zenless Zone Zero.
Progression and character building
What is documented for Honkai: Star Rail
Official Version 3.0 notes identify several Star Rail progression elements:
- Character levels
- Light Cones, the game’s equipment category
- Traces, which are part of character development
- Relics, the gear system used in builds
The same notes refer to a Leveling Guide for viewing progress and materials and to Smart Equip for Relics. These tools indicate that developing a character involves both upgrading the unit and managing equipment, but the cited notes are a version announcement rather than a complete current progression manual.

What cannot yet be stated responsibly about Zenless Zone Zero
No parallel, comprehensive official Zenless Zone Zero progression source is available in the material used for this comparison. It would therefore be misleading to claim that Zenless Zone Zero has less grind, simpler builds, easier gearing or a shorter upgrade path than Star Rail.
The safe conclusion is narrower: Star Rail’s documented build vocabulary includes levels, Light Cones, Traces and Relics, while a full, directly comparable Zenless Zone Zero progression breakdown is not established here. If upgrade complexity is your deciding factor, inspect the current in-game character and equipment screens in both games rather than relying on a claim that one is automatically easier.
How to use progression as a decision criterion
- Decide whether you enjoy optimization. If collecting materials, tuning equipment and comparing team options sounds rewarding, either game can appeal, but Star Rail’s named systems make that structure explicit.
- Separate combat preference from build preference. You can enjoy turn-based planning without wanting a deep optimization project, or enjoy action combat while spending significant time improving a roster. Do not use one preference as a substitute for the other.
- Check the live game before investing. Menus, currencies and upgrade requirements can change with updates. Review the current character, equipment and materials screens before committing money or a long-term team plan.
Gacha systems: Signal Search versus Warp
Both games use chance-based acquisition for characters and equipment, but the names and published guarantees differ. Zenless Zone Zero calls the process Signal Search. Honkai: Star Rail calls it Warp.

These provisions are useful when starting the game, but they are not an apples-to-apples equivalent of a recurring limited-banner guarantee. The 50-search rule is tied to the permanent new-player channel.
Zenless Zone Zero limited channels and separate counters
A separate official limited-channel notice states that limited S-Rank Agents and W-Engines do not become available through the permanent Star-Studded Cast channel. It also explains that search counts on Exclusive Agent Channels accumulate across those channels but remain independent from other channel types. W-Engine channel counts are tracked separately.
That separation matters when planning pulls. A search counter on the permanent channel does not automatically become a counter on a limited Agent channel, and the W-Engine counter is its own category. The cited notice is tied to a historical Version 3.0 schedule, so use it to understand channel separation and verify the live channel’s View Details panel for current rules.
Honkai: Star Rail’s published character and Light Cone guarantees
HoYoverse’s Help Center article dated September 23, 2025 gives the following thresholds:

Character-event and Light Cone counters are independent by banner type. The thresholds do not tell you how many free pulls you will earn, how quickly you will reach a guarantee or what a desired character will cost in your region.
Why the pity numbers should not be compared as “50 versus 90”
It is tempting to conclude that Zenless Zone Zero is more generous because its new-player notice mentions 50 searches while Star Rail’s character notice mentions 90 Warps. That comparison mixes different contexts.
- Zenless Zone Zero’s 50 is a one-time S-Rank guarantee on the permanent Star-Studded Cast onboarding channel.
- Honkai: Star Rail’s 90 is a recurring maximum threshold for a five-star character on Character Event Warps.
- Zenless Zone Zero’s limited Agent and W-Engine channels have their own counters and rules; the permanent-channel guarantee does not describe them.
- Star Rail’s Light Cone Event Warp uses an 80-Warp five-star threshold, with its own featured-item rule.
For a spending decision, compare the exact live banner you intend to use, not the most favorable number from a different channel. Open the in-game View Details screen before pulling because rates, featured units and event rules are subject to change.
A practical choice framework
Choose Zenless Zone Zero first when…
- You want real-time, action-oriented battles rather than selecting actions in turns.
- An urban-fantasy setting centered on New Eridu and the Hollows appeals to you.
- You value the permanent channel’s one-time new-player structure: a 20% discount on the first five ten-searches, an S-Rank within 50 searches and a selectable S-Rank after 300 searches on that channel.
- You are willing to learn the current rules for limited Agent and W-Engine channels separately.
Choose Honkai: Star Rail first when…
- You prefer turn-based team planning and deliberate command selection.
- You want a clearly documented character and equipment vocabulary involving levels, Light Cones, Traces and Relics.
- You want published recurring thresholds for event banners: 90 Warps for a five-star character and 80 for a five-star Light Cone.
- You like a live-service RPG that continues to add characters, Light Cones, areas, events and combat effects.
Try both before spending when…
- You are undecided between action control and turn planning.
- Your main concern is build workload, grind or long-term content volume, because the available evidence does not establish a complete cross-game comparison on those points.
- You are considering a purchase based on a pity threshold alone. A guarantee limits how long you can go without a high-rarity result; it does not guarantee a particular unit on the first high-rarity outcome unless the banner’s featured rule says so.
How to check a banner safely
- Open the current banner’s View Details screen. Do this in the game rather than relying on an old event notice.
- Identify the channel type. In Zenless Zone Zero, distinguish Star-Studded Cast, Exclusive Agent Channels and W-Engine channels. In Star Rail, distinguish Character Event Warp, Light Cone Event Warp and other available Warp categories.
- Read the guarantee and featured-item text. Record the threshold, what counts toward it and whether a non-featured high-rarity result changes the next outcome.
- Check the counter before pulling. Counters are independent across the channel types described above; progress in one does not necessarily transfer to another.
- Set a spending limit before starting. The official thresholds do not establish the amount of free currency you will receive or the total monetary cost of obtaining a particular unit.
- Stop when the planned limit is reached. A pity counter is a rule about probability and guarantees, not a reason to exceed a budget.
Common mistakes in this comparison
Treating the games as the same genre experience
Calling both titles simply “gacha RPGs” hides the choice most readers actually need to make. Their acquisition model is similar in broad terms, but their combat input is different: action in Zenless Zone Zero and turn planning in Star Rail.
Using a permanent-banner rule to predict a limited banner
Zenless Zone Zero’s Star-Studded Cast terms are permanent-channel onboarding details. They do not establish the rules for an Exclusive Agent Channel or a W-Engine channel.

In Star Rail, the Help Center specifically describes a 75% featured chance for a five-star Light Cone and a guarantee of the featured Light Cone on the next five-star if the prior one was not featured. Always read the equivalent text for the banner you are using instead of assuming every high-rarity result is the featured item.
Declaring one game less grindy without a matching progression source
Star Rail’s documented progression terms do not, by themselves, prove that Zenless Zone Zero is more or less demanding. A fair comparison requires current, equivalent information for both games.
