Replay Breath of the Wild if you want a focused return to Hyrule built around rediscovery and exploration. Choose Tears of the Kingdom if you want to revisit Hyrule with more room to build, combine objects, and experiment across land, sky, and underground. Neither is objectively better to replay; the right pick depends on what you want a second adventure to feel like.
How the two games feel on a replay
| What you want from a return visit | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Rediscovery and a more focused exploration loop | Breath of the Wild | Its landmarks, towers, map, and shrine puzzles make exploring the land the central draw. Nintendo presents Link’s awakening after a 100-year slumber as the start of a journey to recover his memories. Nintendo’s features page and Breath of the Wild product page. |
| Building, combining, and trying different solutions | Tears of the Kingdom | Ultrahand construction and Fuse combinations expand the ways to interact with objects, while the adventure spans Hyrule, the sky, and the depths. See Play Nintendo’s launch overview and Nintendo’s product page. |
| A sequel that feels distinct rather than simply newer | Depends on your preferred pace | Tears of the Kingdom is explicitly a sequel, but its additional systems change the kind of exploration it encourages. One GamesRadar+ writer describes it as larger and more nuanced, while finding Breath of the Wild more controlled; that is a reviewer’s judgment, not a measured replay comparison. Choose Breath of the Wild for rediscovery
Breath of the Wild is the stronger replay choice when the pleasure is finding your way through Hyrule again: surveying the land from towers, deciding what to investigate, and tackling shrine puzzles along the way. Nintendo’s description emphasizes Link waking with no memories in a world he no longer knows, which fits a return focused on rediscovering the setting rather than learning a new set of construction possibilities. - Pick it if you want exploration landmarks and shrine puzzles to shape the session.
- It suits a player who prefers a comparatively focused sandbox loop over a broad toolkit for making things.
Choose Tears of the Kingdom for experimentation
Tears of the Kingdom is the better fit if you enjoy asking what else a tool or object can do. Ultrahand lets Link construct with objects, while Fuse combines items; the journey also extends beyond Hyrule’s surface to sky islands and the depths. Nintendo identifies it as the sequel to Breath of the Wild. Play Nintendo and Nintendo.
- Pick it if you like creating solutions rather than relying mainly on the environment you find.
- Its added regions give a return visit a broader sense of vertical exploration.
Which version should you replay on Switch 2?
Nintendo’s US Store lists physical Nintendo Switch 2 Editions of both games. Each product page lists higher resolution, improved frame rates, faster loading, a second save file, and ZELDA NOTES support. These enhanced editions play only on Nintendo Switch 2. This is separate from the general compatibility of original Switch games: Nintendo says Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Switch software, but some titles may be unsupported or not fully compatible. #1 Best Overall
- Enhanced performance and visuals exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2.
- Explore the skies, caves, and vast lands of Hyrule in a massive open-world adventure.
- Wield new and returning abilities to craft solutions, vehicles, and weapons.
- Discover the mystery behind the spreading gloom threatening the kingdom.
- Use the ZELDA NOTES app to share, compare, and earn daily bonuses.
The second save file can make it easier to start fresh without giving up a prior adventure. Nintendo states that a second save created in a Switch 2 Edition cannot be transferred back to the original Switch version. If you own the original Switch version of Tears of the Kingdom, Nintendo Support lists its US Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack at $9.99 USD, or no additional cost for active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members; the original game must also be on the system. That price and membership offer are US-specific and apply to Tears of the Kingdom, not automatically to Breath of the Wild. Nintendo Support’s upgrade details.
Optional replay aids: ZELDA NOTES and amiibo
ZELDA NOTES is available for both Switch 2 Editions through the Nintendo Switch App and does not require Nintendo Switch Online. With a compatible smart device and persistent internet for app features, it offers voice memories, navigation to selected map markers such as shrines and Koroks, play statistics, daily bonuses, compatible amiibo benefits, photo editing, and item sharing. Tears of the Kingdom additionally supports Autobuild schematic sharing through the feature. - Ultrahand: Using the new Ultrahand ability, Link can pick up, move, and rotate almost any object, and can even attach objects together to create bridges, vehicles, and more!
- Fuse: Magically fuse almost any object to Link’s current weapon, shield, or arrow to increase durability, damage, or even add a new effect. Experiment with lots of different combinations to come up with surprising—and sometimes hilarious—results!
- Ascend: Add a new dimension to your exploration with Ascend, which gives Link the ability to pass through solid objects above him. Rise up through ceilings, hillsides, and even certain enemies to create seemingly impossible shortcuts.
- Recall: Use Recall to make objects in motion move backward through time, letting Link ride fallen boulders skyward, recover thrown weapons, or send projectiles back where they came from.
Compatible Legend of Zelda amiibo can grant in-game items in both games, and ZELDA NOTES can provide an extra use of a figure after five scans that day. An amiibo is optional, not a requirement for replaying either game. Nintendo Support.

No controlled comparison of replay hours, completion rates, or replay value is established in the cited sources, so there is no evidence-based universal winner. Nintendo’s historical sales figures do not measure how much players replay a game. The useful distinction is the experience each game offers: rediscovery in Breath of the Wild, or expanded experimentation in Tears of the Kingdom.
