Zelda Switch Pro Controller vs. Standard Nintendo Switch Pro Controller: What Actually Differs?

Short answer: Nintendo identifies official Switch Pro Controllers—including special editions—as model HAC-013. On Nintendo’s documentation, a Zelda-themed Pro Controller and a standard black Pro Controller belong to the same hardware family. There is no established Zelda-only performance feature. Your practical decision is whether the Zelda design is worth the listing’s price premium, and whether the seller is offering a genuine HAC-013 controller.

What Nintendo’s model number tells you

Nintendo’s official support guidance says: “All official Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers have a model number of HAC-013, regardless of the color or special edition (i.e., Black, Splatoon 2 Edition, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Edition, etc.).” That statement is the strongest available basis for comparing a Zelda edition with the standard controller.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

In practical terms, a Zelda-branded controller should not be treated as a different functional model simply because its shell, artwork or packaging is themed. The HAC-013 identifier applies across official colors and special editions. Nintendo’s statement does not, however, establish that every edition has identical artwork, packaging, bundled accessories or current availability. Those details depend on the exact edition and seller listing.

Does the Zelda controller have different features?

No documented Zelda-only function

The available Nintendo documentation identifies special editions by the same HAC-013 model number and does not describe a Zelda edition with a different control layout, battery system, wireless standard or Switch compatibility. That means you should not pay a premium on the assumption that the Zelda graphics unlock extra gameplay functions.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

This is a conclusion about the evidence that is available, not a claim that every historical listing was packaged identically. A particular Zelda release could have different exterior artwork or edition-specific packaging. To establish any physical difference beyond appearance, you would need the official page for that exact release or a listing that clearly documents it.

What the model number does—and does not—prove

  • It does prove family identity: an official controller marked HAC-013 is part of Nintendo’s Switch Pro Controller family.
  • It supports a functional comparison: Nintendo’s support information is written for the family rather than assigning a separate Zelda hardware model.
  • It does not prove current authenticity: a marketplace seller can use an incorrect description or photograph. Verify the actual item and seller.
  • It does not prove package contents: cable inclusion, inserts and other contents must be confirmed on the specific offer.
  • It does not set a current price: Nintendo’s model guidance says nothing about what a Zelda edition should cost today.

Battery life and charging: the same family-level expectations

Approximately 40 hours per full charge

Nintendo states that a fully charged Pro Controller can last approximately 40 hours. This is a manufacturer estimate, not an independent test, and Nintendo warns that duration can be shorter depending on the software application and functions being used. Treat it as a planning figure rather than a guaranteed runtime for either design.

Because Nintendo applies the HAC-013 identifier across colors and special editions, there is no official evidence here that a Zelda shell changes that estimate. If a seller advertises a substantially different battery figure for a Zelda controller, ask for edition-specific documentation instead of assuming the claim is an upgrade.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Approximately six hours to charge fully

Nintendo gives an approximate six-hour time for a full charge. The figure is not presented as a Zelda-edition specification, so use the same expectation for an official standard or themed HAC-013 controller. A used unit may deliver less runtime if its battery has aged; the available support material does not provide a separate degradation rate, so do not convert the six-hour charging figure into a promise about a second-hand controller’s condition.

How to use these numbers when choosing

  • If you need a controller for long sessions, compare the condition and return policy of the actual unit; the design alone does not establish longer battery life.
  • If a listing claims a special battery, request an official source or clear technical documentation for that edition.
  • Do not treat a short initial charge or a runtime below 40 hours as proof of a different Zelda circuit without considering software use, functions enabled and battery condition.

Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility

Nintendo’s compatibility guidance says the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller works with Nintendo Switch 2 wirelessly. This makes an authentic HAC-013 controller relevant if you own the newer console, whether the shell is standard or Zelda-themed.

Compatibility is not the same as new Switch 2 features

Wireless compatibility means the controller can be used with Switch 2; it does not establish that the original Pro Controller gains Switch 2-specific functions. The available guidance does not document a Zelda edition with extra Switch 2 controls, enhanced feedback or other console-specific hardware. Keep the distinction clear when reading listings that use “Switch 2 compatible” as a selling point.

Charging through the dock

Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information also addresses charging through the dock. Use the console and controller guidance for the exact connection method and conditions. The compatibility statement does not turn a Zelda edition into a separate Switch 2 controller model, nor does it establish different charging behavior between the two designs.

Wired use and the NFC limitation

Cable model HAC-010

Nintendo identifies cable model HAC-010 for wired communication with the Pro Controller. If a Zelda listing is sold without a cable, confirm whether you already have a suitable cable or whether the seller includes HAC-010. Do not assume that every used or special-edition package contains the same accessories.

NFC is disabled in wired mode

Nintendo’s wired-use guidance states: “The NFC touchpoint on the Pro Controller will be disabled when the controller is using wired communication.” In other words, connecting the controller by cable changes NFC availability while that wired communication is active. This behavior is a family-level operating rule, not a Zelda-versus-standard distinction.

Choose wireless operation when you need NFC functionality, and use wired communication when a cable connection is more appropriate. The available evidence does not establish a Zelda edition that bypasses this limitation.

Which one should you buy?

Choose the standard controller when function and price come first

  • You want an official HAC-013 controller without paying for themed artwork.
  • You are replacing a worn controller and need the same Pro Controller family features.
  • You are buying more than one controller and want to minimize the cost difference between units.
  • You are unconcerned with collecting a Zelda design.

The standard choice is the rational default when the two listings are otherwise comparable and the Zelda edition costs more. Nintendo’s documentation does not provide a performance reason to select the themed shell.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the Zelda edition when the design justifies the premium

  • The artwork is important to you as a fan or collector.
  • The exact unit is authentic, in the condition you want and covered by a satisfactory return policy.
  • The price difference is acceptable after you compare it with a standard HAC-013 listing available in your region.
  • You understand that the premium is for the edition’s design and collectability, not a documented functional upgrade.

Keep your existing controller instead of upgrading for performance

If you already own a working official HAC-013 controller, the available evidence does not identify a Zelda-specific control or battery advantage that would justify replacing it for gameplay reasons alone. Consider a new purchase for cosmetic preference, a second-player setup, or the condition of your current unit—not because the Zelda label implies faster response or extra Switch 2 capability.

How to verify a Zelda listing before you buy

  1. Ask for the exact model identifier. The official Pro Controller family identifier is HAC-013. Request a clear photograph of the product label or packaging if the listing does not state it.
  2. Separate the controller from the listing title. Words such as “Zelda,” “limited,” or “special edition” describe the presentation; they do not by themselves prove a different hardware model or authenticity.
  3. Check the seller and return terms. Nintendo’s model guidance cannot verify a marketplace seller. Prefer an offer that identifies the seller, condition and return process clearly.
  4. Confirm the exact condition. New, open-box, refurbished and used units can have different battery condition and included accessories. The approximately 40-hour figure is not a guarantee for an aged battery.
  5. Confirm what is in the box. Ask whether a charging or wired-use cable is included and whether it is identified as HAC-010. Do not infer contents from a stock photograph.
  6. Check regional details at checkout. Availability, pricing and compatibility claims can differ by country. Current Zelda stock and regional price were not established by Nintendo’s family-level support pages.
  7. Compare the actual price gap. First find the current price of an official standard HAC-013 from a trustworthy seller, then decide whether the Zelda artwork is worth the additional amount. There is no universal fair premium established here.
  8. Be cautious with unsupported feature claims. Claims of extra buttons, a different battery, special Switch 2 functions or exclusive performance should be backed by an edition-specific official specification.

Common mistakes when comparing the two editions

Assuming “special edition” means “new hardware”

Nintendo explicitly groups official colors and special editions under HAC-013. A themed exterior is not evidence of a separate electronics platform.

Assuming Switch 2 compatibility means a Switch 2 redesign

The original Pro Controller’s wireless compatibility with Switch 2 is useful, but it does not establish new Switch 2-specific functions. Do not pay extra for a Zelda listing merely because it repeats the compatibility label.

Treating the 40-hour figure as a guarantee

Nintendo says “approximately” 40 hours and notes that software and functions affect duration. Battery condition also matters when you buy used, so inspect the listing’s condition and return terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expecting NFC while connected by cable

Nintendo says NFC is disabled during wired communication. This applies regardless of whether the controller has Zelda artwork or a standard shell.

Assuming every Zelda listing is official or currently available

Current stock, regional pricing and authenticity of a particular marketplace listing are not established by the model-family guidance. Verify the exact seller and item before paying.

A simple decision rule

Your priority Better fit Reason
Lowest cost for Pro Controller functionality Standard HAC-013 No Zelda-specific functional advantage is established.
Zelda artwork or collecting Authentic Zelda HAC-013 The design is the differentiator, provided the premium is acceptable.
Wireless play on Switch 2 Either authentic HAC-013 version Nintendo lists the original Pro Controller as wirelessly compatible.
Wired communication Either version with HAC-010 or a suitable confirmed cable Wired behavior is shared; NFC is disabled in wired mode.
Buying used Whichever listing has clearer condition and returns Battery health and package contents are listing-specific.

Use this rule: buy the standard controller when the price difference matters more than the artwork; buy the Zelda controller when the artwork matters enough to justify the verified premium. In both cases, confirm HAC-013 and the seller’s exact description.

How to evaluate the price premium

There is no Nintendo-set Zelda surcharge that can be applied universally. A special-edition controller may be listed above, below or near the price of a standard controller depending on region, condition, stock and seller. Treat the premium as a personal value judgment rather than as payment for documented extra hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by recording the delivered price of a standard, authentic HAC-013 from a seller you trust. Then compare the delivered price of the Zelda listing, including shipping, taxes and any required cable. The meaningful number is the difference between those two offers, not an old launch price or an advertised percentage discount. If the themed unit is used, also account for weaker return protection or uncertain battery condition.

A higher price can make sense for a verified collector item in excellent condition, but the listing should clearly identify the edition and show the actual controller. A high price alone does not authenticate an item, prove rarity or establish a performance benefit.

Practical checks for new, open-box and used units

New or sealed

Check that the seller identifies the exact edition, provides a return policy and does not rely solely on a generic stock image. Confirm that HAC-013 appears on the packaging or in the seller’s documentation. Ask whether the pictured box is the box you will receive.

Open-box or refurbished

Ask which accessories are included, whether the controller was tested wirelessly and whether the seller guarantees the battery. “Refurbished” is not a Nintendo model number and does not by itself describe the battery’s remaining capacity. A clear condition grade and return window are more useful than a vague claim that the unit is like new.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Used

Request photographs of the actual front, back, model label and cable or accessories. Ask how long the controller operates after a full charge, while remembering that Nintendo’s approximately 40-hour figure is a family estimate rather than a used-unit guarantee. Look for a return option in case the item does not match the description.

What to do when a listing is vague

If the seller will not provide the model identifier, condition, package contents or return terms, compare another listing instead of filling in the gaps yourself. A title that says “Zelda controller” can refer to an official special edition, a third-party shell, a used item or an inaccurate description. The title alone cannot distinguish those possibilities.

Likewise, do not infer that a cable is included from a photograph of a retail box, and do not infer that a controller is Switch 2-specific from a compatibility badge. Ask focused questions and keep the seller’s answers with the order record. If the answers conflict with the photographs or product description, treat that as a reason to avoid the offer.

Who benefits most from each version?

Competitive or frequent players: Choose based on authenticity, condition and reliable returns. Nintendo’s published family figures do not give the Zelda shell a response-time or battery advantage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Collectors: The Zelda design may be the main reason to buy. Pay for the artwork only after confirming the exact edition, seller and condition; the HAC-013 number identifies the controller family but not every collectible detail.

Families and multiplayer owners: A standard HAC-013 is usually the simpler value comparison when several controllers are needed. A Zelda unit can still be a personal favorite, but multiply its premium by the number of units before deciding.

Switch 2 owners: Either authentic version can be relevant because Nintendo lists the original Pro Controller for wireless use. Do not assume that a Zelda edition adds functions that Nintendo has not documented.

Bottom line

The Zelda and standard Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers should be compared as official HAC-013 family members, not as two proven hardware platforms. Nintendo’s published guidance supports the same approximately 40-hour battery estimate, approximately six-hour full-charge time, wireless use with Switch 2 and wired communication behavior, including the NFC limitation. Buy the standard version for straightforward value; buy the Zelda version when its verified design and collectability justify the actual premium. Before checkout, confirm HAC-013, the seller, condition, accessories, return terms and current regional price.

Does the Zelda Pro Controller have better battery life?

Nintendo gives the Pro Controller family an approximate 40-hour runtime when fully charged and an approximate six-hour full-charge time. No separate Zelda battery specification is established.

Is the Zelda Pro Controller compatible with Nintendo Switch 2?

Nintendo says the original Switch Pro Controller works with Nintendo Switch 2 wirelessly. An authentic Zelda controller that is HAC-013 falls within that controller family, but compatibility does not establish extra Switch 2 functions.

Can I use the Zelda controller with a cable?

Yes. Nintendo identifies cable model HAC-010 for wired communication. NFC is disabled while the controller is communicating in wired mode.

Does every Zelda listing include the official cable?

Not necessarily. Package contents are listing-specific. Confirm whether a cable is included and whether the seller identifies it as HAC-010 rather than relying on a stock photograph.

Is a high price proof that a Zelda controller is authentic or rare?

No. Price does not verify authenticity, edition or rarity. Check the HAC-013 identifier, actual photographs, seller, condition and return policy.

Should I replace my regular Pro Controller with the Zelda version?

Not for an established gameplay upgrade. If your official HAC-013 controller works properly, replace it for design preference, collecting, another player or condition—not for documented Zelda-specific performance.

How can I compare the prices fairly?

Compare the delivered price of an authentic standard HAC-013 with the delivered price of the exact Zelda listing in your region. Include shipping, taxes, accessories and the value of the return policy.
